Windows 10 Finally here :)

Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder.

then go to windows update and check for updates

its going to re download the files seems like an corrupt download when the boot.wim is missing

once you have done that it will show downloading windows 10 the file size would be according to your OS 64 or 32, mines 64 bit the the file download is 2.7 gb

ok i'm busy downloading win10 pro 64-bit atm using this. my question is whne i receive my new pc parts, do a clean installation of win8.1 pro 64bit, activate it and then install win10 from this iso will my win10 be activated etc?

That`s the part i am scared off. As far as i read, if you change something like a mobo or any crucial part of the PC your windows 10 key deactivate and you need to get a new key.

So I would suggest keep windows 8.1 for now and once you get the new parts then update to 10.

thats my plan. waiting on my goodies from shockg so i cant install anything atm. but i dont want to upgrade my current windows because i'm using win8.1 for almost 6months now so i would prefer a clean install.

Wait, what? If you get Windows 10 now and upgrade a few months down the line, you have to buy a new Windows 10 key?

Same with windows 8.1 though isn't it? Deactivate your license first before upgrading and you should be fine

I have 8.1 now. The reason I ask is because in a few months I want to upgrade.

How would this work though? For example: If I continue with 8.1 and upgrade to 10, then my motherboard dies a week later I effectively lose my windows 10 upgrade?

If you lose your motherboard you call a number and they give you a long activation code so you can re activate your windows on another pc. I think once you have upgraded to windows 10 your windows 8.1 key becomes a windows 10 key.

I do stand to be corrected though on that last bit haha

Yeah. the key I have is retail, so if it's upgraded to a non-retail OEM type key, then that's effectively downgrading my 8.1 licence, which I then cant actually use anymore?

What happens if I change my motherboard?
As it pertains the OEM licenses this will invalidate the Windows 10 upgrade license because it will no longer have a previous based qualifying license which is required for the free upgrade. You will then have to purchase a full retail Windows 10 license. If the base qualifying license (Windows 7 or Windows 8.1) was a full retail version, then yes, you can transfer it.

wow that sucks! guess I won't be upgrading my Motherboard any time soon lel

This means I should check if my 8.1 license is actually full retail :S

So if you have a valid and registered Win 7 key, you can use Win 10 on all new PC's bought, one at a time of course? And not just your current mobo? I am a bit confused about this.

i purchased a win8.1 pro key from g2a.com. how do i know if it is a OEM or retail key?

It's easy to check once it's installed:

Right-click My Computer and select Properties. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and find the Product ID.

The Product ID should be in the form xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx. What are the 3 characters in the second group (if those 3 characters are OEM, then you have an OEM version).

OEM - OEM SLP or OEM System Builder (MGAdiag will distinguish in the License Type field)
007 - VLK MAK
033 - VLK MAK
049 - VLK MAK
050 - Technet Plus Enterprise MAK (do same key used to activate Professional give this CID?)
065 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Ultimate
066 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Ultimate
067 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Ultimate
074 - Retail Windows 7 Ultimate
112 - Retail Windows 7 Home Premium (conflicting info says MSDN)
177 - Retail Windows 7 Professional
220 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Professional
230 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Home Premium
231 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Home Premium
292 - Retail Windows 7 Ultimate?
293 - Retail Windows 7 Ultimate? (maybe Academic)
339 - Retail Windows 7 Home Basic
838 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Professional
896 - Retail Windows 7 Home Basic N
929 - Retail Windows 7 Home Basic E
956 - Retail Windows 7 Ultimate (Genuine Advantage store?)

Also, just confirm with the info you got from g2a.com. The invoice should state if it's OEM or retail.

I have a problem. I'm doing the free upgrade from Windows 7, and the files are fully downloaded, I think, but Windows Update told me "you've got an update", so I clicked shut down and install updates.

Now, for almost quarter of an hour, probably, it's sitting on installing update 1 of 1...

What do I do???

Should I takeb out the CAT5 cable?

My product id on 8.1 shows xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx also no mention of OEM. I was thinking of selling my proc, GPU and maybe my motherboard. But now how will this affect my win10 install. I got win8 upgrade online from ms as a digital dl when it was so cheap.

Took out the network cable, and for the first time in EVER there was HDD activity. Hoping it'll shut down now. Getting irritated...

It downloaded everything for Windows 10 automatically and then failed to update. I tried again and it failed again. Restarting didn't help. I gave up and just installed directly from the Build 10240 iso. It installed fine and is busy downloading updates now.

and for windows 8?

Mine not activating and i had a legit win8 pro upgrade key.

So mine is retail. Thanks @ vinodh for the command. Win 10 would not activate. Rolled back and re-downloading the upgrade again :( Wonder if MS maybe have an issue with the servers

One of my PC's activated just fine. The other refuses to activate. I used the same method to upgrade both PC's with the activated one being done a few days ago. Probably server overload.
