Hello Peeps
Not sure if this is in the right section if not please direct me where i must post.

Im inporting a Mazda Roadster ( MX5 MK3 Hard top) for the Wife.
Her grocery getter a Hundai Getz is getting old and starting to give some issues, not to mention over 300k on the clock with very poor maintenance from the previous owner.

Seeing as the car is way overpriced here in SA, i bought it in Yokohama Japan.
They confirmed my order today. meanning that the car will be loaded onto the next RoRo (Roll on Roll of Boat) coming to Durban Port.

Some people may Feel that this is wrong as i am not supporting Local, but i believe if you cant afford something and have Legal means of obtaining something you want then hey, why not?

Let me know what you think.
Pic of the car i am importing.

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

I think the customs is going to nail you. You may end up paying far more than what you would have paid locally.

But someone with experience may know better than me.

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

Hi, I'd be very interested to know the registration process. Did you find it cheaper to import including all the fees, duties and tax? Perhaps you could share the process from start to finish?

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

Let me Thell you the process.

You See a car you want I Used Be Foward But ther are plenty like SBT Japan And Trust Trade cars.
www.befoward.jp

Once interested request an Proforma invoice. This will verify that the car is still available and it is to avoid double selling a Car.

Now you need to Decide what you want to use the car for? Daily or Racing ( everybody loves imports )

For both uses you will need a clearing agent in Durban who will handle all the tax and duties. that clearing agent will get all the necessary paperwork to prove its yours ( for racing purpose ) to be able to drive it on our roads the clearing agent must send this car to Lesotho via Truck, then you pay more tax and duties and the registration on Lesotho "Natis".

Obviously you need to have Relatives in Lesotho where the car can be registered to.

Then you can go and collect the car.

This car in sa is still R150 000 And more as as its the mk3.

Ill Pay about 70K my way.

Will you then be driving with Lesotho registration (Plates, registration, insurance)?

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

Are you doing the Lesotho route? Keep us posted please

Yes, Lesotho Plates and registration ,Easyiest way.
Not sure about insurance yet

There are 6 ways to register a car in Sa once imported.

1. Emigrating to SA.
2. Got the car from a dead relative.
3. Special car ( disabled, handicapped modified for special needs)
4.Vintage (older than 60 years
5. Exotic ( cant be found in sa of was never available here)
6. You Know a Guy who knows a guy who likes alot of KFC and Coca-cola. ;)

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

Yep that's the way, key word though is trust.I did it once with a nissan skyline gt-r the r34 about 7 years back(Zimbabwe though not Lesotho).I ran with it for like 4 years, all my friend had to do was renew it at the border every year. When he immigrated, I sold it for track use

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

can also be registered via Swaziland.

U can register the car with GP plates, comes down to who you know

AFAIK the vintage car category allowed for registration in SA is anything prior to 2000, that's how the okes are importing RX7's and Skylines. But it is a major headache that take a good 6 months or more, watch Nelkels JDM volgs on Youtube, he explains the whole process for importing and SA registration.

Or one could go the easy (expensive) route and use a service like Rospa Imports. They do everything from buying the vehicle to it being delivered and registered.

Doesn't that fit into the exotic/collectible category? I remember researching this a while back when I wanted a rare classic, that was younger than vintage. I'll take a look at those vlogs, thanks for that!

Yeah it was something like that, I also did a ton of research earlier in the year. Can't remember all the details now. And no problem bud :) It's one of his much older videos on there

Oh Man what a car! I would have framed it and kept it on display even if I couldn't drive it:victorious:

Nakie Whats the price on the Getz going to be?

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

skylix001 With all do respect, that car is so shot. I wouldnt like to sell it to a Carbmember.
Or any single women, friend or family. cos it might breakdown unexpectedly if you dont spend about 10k on it.
But the price is R28000

A friend of mine imported an e30 m3 which made mine less special lol. I struggled for like 6 months to get the e30 m3 also and the only viable way was Swaziland but I don't know anyone that side plus the left hand drive was a turn off and a bit off a nightmare to live with on a daily basis at least according to him

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

A friend of mine has a left hand drive.
Always funny to see him at every parking boom.
He has to get out, do a little run around and get back in.

Why just not get a E30 333I ?

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

Why just not get a E30 333I ?

Most of them are rust buckets and the guys are asking ridiculous prices.I saw the other day a guy selling an 325is evo 2 for R250k, imagine how much a 333 will cost. The spares must be very scarce unlike the m20

Re: Inporting A car For the wife!

Tried this with a 300 Fairlady Z a few years back. After months and having paid nearly double the the initial price in taxes, shipping, more taxes, levies and even a few bribes, I was contacted by a serious sounding man from customs who told me it was not possible. Not at all. (This goes double for vehicles that are actually sold here in the republic). Managed to sell it to a guy in Moz luckily and make some Zars back (had to do it under the table as well)

Found out afterwards that the ONLY way to import a vehicle is to have it disassembled, shipped over and reassembled here (provided it has less than a 2.5l 6 cylinder engine or something along those lines) This will also mean that you have to pay for and declare parts instead of just one item like a car. And it will be a code 2, or 3... can't remember.

I wish you luck but if nothing has changed since I tried, you probably will never see that car.... sorry boet.

Jirre, I hope for this guys sake that this won't be the case. I was bummed about my R400 that was short-changed to me at the ATM the other day, I can't imagine losing a car.

Did you do the same route that he's planning on doing? Taking it to another African country and registering it there?

First tried to bring it straight to SA but after all the hassle, tried registering through Botswana. Found out that you need to have lived there for 3 years or owned a business registered in Bot to do so.... They make it really, REALLY hard to import specific models, especially from Japan.

3 years ago I also tried to buy a short wheelbase Landcruiser with Swazi plates but again, the car needs to be driven in SA by the person who imported it (and is unable to buy a new one or needs it for a specific job) for a year before being able to sell it... I tried to convince them that I needed it for work and could not get an alternative but they didn't fall for it. Its really kak as the cars manufactured in SA and exported to neighbouring countries go for less than here.. It's to "protect" local manufacturers but we only see a 5th of the cars imported from Japan and EU and even some of the rebrands made here.

I did manage to get my hands on a Voxhaull 24v Calibra Turbo via a contact in Moz and everything was technically going smooth to get it registered here but my dad wrote it off going through a pothole at 220....
Such is life
