Hi guys,

So this started happening after I changed from a Gigabyte GTX 980ti to a Galax HOF 980ti.
The card works perfectly, but during games like Overwatch or even the much older Vermintide 1 the game would randomly crash after the card reaches about 82-85 degrees.
I have adjusted the fan curve, but without any OC on the card, having to do this makes no sense to me as the fans are loud...

Note that games like The Division runs fine on Ultra with standard fan curve.
Yet I had to actually set Overwatch to Low for it to not crash.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this pain in the ass of a problem?

the older or less tasking games prob have much higher fps cooking the gpu. might be time to change the thermal paste.

Hey man have the same gpu, and were experiencing the same issue at first. Applying some thermal paste did the job. The cooler comes off fairly easy. Just make sure you have the right screwdriver those little buggers are very very small.

What temps did u get with your gigabyte

all the best.

I maxxed the gigabyte out at about 75 degrees after a couple hours of playing The Division.
And yea, will replace the TP on the HOF tonight. I should have a small enough bit for my screwdriver.

The strangest part of this whole scenario is the error messages I was getting.
Something in the line of the GPU device lost or something like that...

May I ask, are you 100% its temp related? Reason I ask, is because aren't these cards supposed to throttle when they reach temps that are too high? high 80s, is high, but I don't think crash high?

It's the only thing I can think of.
When it first happened on Overwatch on a fresh install of windows I checked the error code and google results pointed to temp issues, thus I dropped the graphics settings and it worked fine.
Then along came Vermintide 1 and it crashed with a somewhat similar error message and I decided to screw with the fan curve to up the speed and it sorted it out for that game.
I had similar problems on games with my previous case that caused my cpu and gpu to overheat because of poor air intake. Removing the front panel which allowed more air into the case sorted it with the gpu I had at that time.

Basically once the temps hit about 85 it seems to throttle as the temp ceiling is 90 degrees according to Afterburner.
This then causes the gpu driver or something to get a hiccup and the game to crash...

Atleast this is what it looks like...

Ahhh, then I agree. Everything points to temps. As mentioned earlier, try a good thermal paste replacement. Not the cheap stuff you have lying around from 4 years ago :p go and buy a good quality paste.

I have a decent tub of Coolermaster TP at home. I use that on everything.
Alternatively I have a tube of coolermaster tp that came with my cpu cooler in December... so either way I am sorted on the tp front.

What temps does the card reach when fans are set to 100%? Im sure the card crashes during say a furmark too right?

Furmark doesn't crash it.
And not sure what the temps are at 100% but they are loud as hell though... to the point where I hear them while I have my crappy 'gaming' headphones on.

I think it capped out around 95 after running for about an hour.

Now that is a very interesting piece of info. 95 degrees in furmark doesn't crash it, but high 80s in certain games does.

Shot in the dark here, but could it not perhaps be the game? Have you applied all the latest patches to the games that are problematic?

Yea, installed Vermintide yesterday off steam, and overwatch was a fresh download/install through blizzard app as well.
I generally keep all my games updated, not that you have much choice with online games.

OK. You have me seriously curious now. Please report back once new paste is applied and hopefully if it brings down the in game temps.
I have this sneaky feeling that it wont solve the problem. But I do appreciate being wrong. :)

I must say though, if replacing the thermal paste doesn't solve the issue then I myself am out of ideas.
Should be home around 4pm at which time I can replace the paste. Will update then.

Well, if the thermal paste doesn't help, by bringing temps down enough, the last shot is Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo to bring temps down to the 60s?

Yea due to me mainly caring about the visual look of my pc, this is not really an option.
GPU is vertically mounted and I would hate to have to look at those fugly fans each day :p
I'd rather stick one of those AIO watercooling brackets on it and convert it to liquid cooling, atleast that doesn't look as bad.

Low and behold.
Replaced the current tp on the card (current tp was crusty and pushed off the die already). and the temps under furmark dropped to 74 degrees with standard fan profiles.
It's changing between 73 and 74 as the fan speed increases/decreases.
So thanks all for the help/suggestions.
Seems the pasta was the cause of my 'overheating'

As a side note, what exactly does the button on the back of the card do?

Runs the fans at 100%
Then my button be broken... nothing changes in fan speed if it's pressed or depressed.

**Edit. Found this on the KFA2 forums.

Have you put the card under high load yet?

That's not what the button does actually anymore. It's just a secondary BIOS button now and both BIOS are the same by default.

OP: The button does nothing besides to switch between two BIOS."

So it seems that it just switches between the cards Bios which would make sense then that it doesn't do anything for me.

Button has a backup BIOS. Supposed to be for OC but it's near identical to the normal one and will give you zero boost.
For paste I stick with the Thermal Grizzly stuff. can't be beaten ;)

I put some CM IceFusion on it. Never had any issues with this paste in the past.

My apologies, on my old 970 hof the only thing I noticed was the fans running at full speed. It didn't switch bios on the 970

It's all good. seems HOF/KFA2 only changed this from the 980/ti's
