Not 100% sure but I read somewhere when I was googling the same thing regarding my 970 HOF that It's a boost button mainly for extreme ocing/and running fans full speed and bypassing certain safety limitations( voltage etc) on the card in case you want to LN2 or something. As a side note, what exactly does the button on the back of the card do?
Yea this was the case on the 970's. from the 980's they changed this to swap between one of 2 bios incase your oc on one failed/crashed i guess. Not 100% sure but I read somewhere when I was googling the same thing regarding my 970 HOF that It's a boost button mainly for extreme ocing/and running fans full speed and bypassing certain safety limitations( voltage etc) on the card in case you want to LN2 or something.
i play most games with vsync on which caps the frames at 60.Do u have your framrate locked or unlocked ??
Try locking it so your card wont have to pump out more frames ...bringing down temps

Low and behold.
Replaced the current tp on the card (current tp was crusty and pushed off the die already). and the temps under furmark dropped to 74 degrees with standard fan profiles.
It's changing between 73 and 74 as the fan speed increases/decreases.
So thanks all for the help/suggestions.
Seems the pasta was the cause of my 'overheating'
Yep. Ran Vermintide on max settings for a few hours with standard fan profiles and it ran perfectly.Unbelievable. Did you manage to game on it to check if the crashing had stopped?

Temps didn't go above 65c with normal gaming.
It's amazing that the card was running at all seeing as there was barely any paste on the gpu die.Brilliant result.
