Hi Everyone

Looking for some advise on how to handle a bit of a situation I'm having with wootware and a 7900XT XFX merc I bought off there. I got the initial unit around September last year 2023. The card ran smoothly and I was mainly playing some lower end games on it. Then Picked up Alan Wake 2 and Recement 2 and the Problems started. The card started overheating and hitting crazy temps in menus. I thought initially maybe it was some setting or something on Adrenaline. So I contacted the Manufacturer they asked me to run some tests, I send them some 3D mark results ect. They advised the card appears faulty that I should contact the reseller as they had a few bad eggs that were having heating issues. I contacted wootware the card was collect about 10 Business days later they agreed the card is faulty and shipped me a replacement unit as that was all they could offer me. I asked if there was any chance we could try a different brand or such but ultimately I got told I could have another XFX Merc sent or nothing. So I took the card It got shipped to me on Monday so 11/03/2024 I opened it installed the card and decided to test. And much to my surprise less then 2 hours in the cards doing the same thing my other card was doing, getting to hot throttling then just either crashing the game or my machine.

So I contacted them again, They want to collect the card again test it again then provide most likely the same result that its DOA, Then they mentioned they could offer me store credit but its a bit frustrating at this point, And even the store credit doesn't feel like a valid solution to me, so they give me store credit, I then have to pay in to get another card because as you can imagine I'm not touching this brand/card again its my first AMD card and its been a sour experience the same for woot tbh, I've paid about R600 just for shipping all of this so far. And then even if I do that no guarantee the new card isn't just faulty as well right?

What do I ask for/do Here?

Just plopping me my credit back seems lame after shipping me 2 DOA cards in a row.

I dont think they could have done anything else differently besides maybe cover your shipping. The fact that you ended up with two faulty cards is just really bad luck on your part. Some of the 7900XTX cards have issues with vapor chamber configuration. What is statistically more likely is possibly your case cooling configuration or the area that you live in is causing elevated ambient temp inside your case.

How many fans are you using to create airflow in your case? Are you using an air cooler or AIO for your CPU? Are you generating internal pressure inside your case?

Maybe you just unlucky dude. Its a bit disappointing but personally I'd just blame it on bad luck, be glad I got store credit and buy something else, definitely not another 7900xtx.

So what are you expecting? You cannot buy a relatively low end card and then expect it to be replaced with a higher end card at their cost.

Also don’t understand how you say they shipped you 2 DOA cards in a row. The first was shipped in Sept 2023 and went faulty recently. The replacement was then doa which they are willing to give you credit for. At the end of the day, it’s not their fault that the card is faulty.

I’m pretty sure their policy is you don’t pay for return shipping if it’s doa but only if it’s faulty after some time so you should have only paid for return shipping once.

What GPU did you have in the system before this and did that run fine?

Just to respond to the above:
Can you post full specs of your System please,

Full specs are:

AMD RYZEN 5 7600x
XR5 32GB 6200MHz
MSI PRO B650M
DEEPCOOL PQ750M 750W 80 PLUS
2TB Samsung NVME
HUAWEI MateView GT 34 Inch 165 Hz

How many fans are you using to create airflow in your case? Are you using an air cooler or AIO for your CPU? Are you generating internal pressure inside your case?

Currently:
On my CPU I have :
DeepCool LS520 Premium CPU Liquid
I have 2 Intake fans on the front Nothing Crazy 2 MF140 Cooler masters
The Radiator for the CPU outputting at the top
Then 2 Outtake Fans that came with the case not sure what the brand is but they're not bad.

So without the card in my machine my ambient temp in my case running around 40-50 Which I don't think is bad
So its not like my case its self is venting badly

I Mean I'm not expecting them to give me a 4090 lol, Just swap it out with a different brand of card at the same price point or an attempt to just to pay me back as opposed to store credit. Like I said its a gamble no idea if the next card is DOA as well.

They did ship 2 DOA cards, The first card was never pushed past 20% Utilization so kind of hard to detect any problems when it barely gets used. Was quite Literally playing Warcraft III and HOFM 2-3 The second it touched a newer title the card almost blew it self up, Don't know about you but that's pretty DOA to me. And yes of course its not 100% their fault, But I have Asked if they could open the card for me and test it which is a fair way to avoid costs both our sides don't u think ^^

Just for context these cards are pushing 90-100 Ambient -> 115+ On Hotspots
The other cards I've tested with are:

1070 ( My oldest card) This little thing never hits above 75
2080 (Friends card I was borrowing after 1st card got sent in) Couldn't get this card Card in the same titles with appropriate settings for that card sit around 70-80 at High Utilization So I don't think its my airflow.

Also confused by:

buy a relatively low end card

This is considered a low end card? What is mid Range then a 4080? And then High end?

50C ambient temp? Are you sure? Thats high, quite high. How are you measuring it. Is this under load or just during idle. Your current fan setup might be creating negative pressure inside your case since you have more fans pointing out than in. Unlikely its causing all your problems though. Maybe turn the two exhaust fans inward and see if it helps. 50C ambient at idle is high..

I have no experience with these cards. Have you tried undervolting?

What does the fan curve for the GPU look like under load?

I dont think a 7900XT is low end.

I'm Grasping straws with the ambient tbh with u not sure how to measure that accurately for us I'm taking around 10 - 15 off from what I see on my CPU but It feels like just cool air if I put my hand there so don't take that number as gospel

I wanted to but I got warnings regarding Warranty so was a bit iffy to try and play around to much

Its at max usually 3500 RPM

Try a different driver set perhaps. This doesn't sound normal.

Run hwinfo and furmark and report back here on what it shows for temps, voltage and watts

@Stingrat The cards off to them for testing today, But I 100% Agree this is not at all what I'm use to The card was pulling 340W at load. I did try swap out some Drivers didn't seem to help from what I remember the card was cooling down pretty fast it wasn't idling very high in comparison around 60-70 Ambient and then It would spike the second I run FunMark or 3DMark and then it sounds like a Jet taking off

I wasnt running Tests long enough to give proper results to share as the card was getting so hot I was scared ima nuke it. Its why I opted to just send it in and let them check

Yeah man, I've seen a lot of these xfx 7900xt cards have this issue.

I had to RMA the exact same one I had a while back because as soon as I ran a game/firestrike the hotspot would go straight to 103C

"Around September 2023" is too vague to answer this accurately. If more than 180 days, its their prerogative to repair, replace or credit - refund falls away after 180 days. I'm sure they'd swap with a different brand if you'd like, you'll just need to chip in the difference.

They did ship 2 DOA cards, [snip] Don't know about you but that's pretty DOA to me
DOA has a fairly clear definition, generally fault detected and reported within 7 days of receipt. Not pushing the card and missing the problem for an extended period of time isn't what would be considered DOA. Unfortunately it's not subjective.

Not XFX. If XFX released an RTX 5995GX2 Ti Super Duper XP Titanium GTI 2000+ ST Master Over-9000 Ultra XXX KS Special Xtreme Performance AMG CEO Elite Edition TODAY it would be considered low end ;)

Honestly whatever the issue is. wether its the card it self or your case or your ambient
Getting store credits at retail value is pretty awesome specially after months of initial purchase date
Just take it and buy a 4070 super or something.
Kudos to wootware

I did ask they told me they can only replace the device, So I'm guessing it needs to get to the store credit stage, The Tech im talking to is very vague on what I can and cant do here. I guess just looking for more general info on how to handle situations like this?

Ill rephrase that to 2 Faulty cards if that's more suitable but u general Idea something isn't right

So XFX = Bad bad? General advice on Brand purchase then? Last card I had was from MSI and never had issues so don't really know what brands u can get away with or what not. My understanding was the cooling was all that really changes/Visuals

What card did u end up with ?
Way too high for idle. I think the norm for these cards is 35 to 45. What is your cpu idling at?
Sitting with Helldivers 2 open in the background 40% utilization

Good to know, Never dealt with this type of situation. Thus why I thought Id ask here not sure what the Go to is here Brand specifications for the 4070 to avoid?

57C doesnt seem too bad for 40%.. Have you tried gaming with the case open?

Bought 2 Cards they are both overheating. The extent of the heat cant be my airflow. Just looking for advice on how to handle the type situations do I take store credit and move on with my life Do I ask for something else, And possibly what other cards suggestions in the 7900xt Price range would people recommend / Brands to avoid

I did And it tends to push the temps even more so I think my airflow isn't the best probably I'm still working on the build, But its good enough for now. I just think I'm unlucky and got 2 bad cards.

Bad enough that AMD SA wants them out the country (although that's more to do with XFX's business practices).

XFX is the only vendor (ignoring the million cheap Chinese case/fan/peripheral OEMs) begging me to buy stock directly from them, offering to move mountains to make it work. It's quite unbecoming.

Sounds like a contact pressure issue, watched alot of northwestrepair vids, I'm thinking the thermal pads on the memory might be too thick.
that instant high temp ramp is a lack of good pressure contact on the die.

How do you feel about Palit & Zotac Just cheap Knockoffs or should they be fine?

Super bummed you had a bad experience with AMD. I have a gigabyte 7900xtx the card is amazing. I love amd software so much better than Nvidia. It does sound like you got 2 lemons.
Wootware are very much within their right to credit you and not pay you cash. I know it's not ideal for you but from the business it's not their fault xfx made faulty cards. If anything you should contact them to refund your shipping.
Xfx should be good. Most of the brands of cards are pretty standard. Like what was said their was a vapour chamber issue and possibly a memory pad problem. Nvidia is always a solid card. Was just disappointed in the 40 series of what they have brought out and their performance to price. There have also been Nvidia card issues. Just watch the repair channels but keep in mind there are thousands of cards without issues otherwise the company's wouldn't exist. Hoping you find your perfect card. Wish you all the best.

Not sure if it's mentioned somewhere above, but just don't buy a 7900 XTX.
They have always had overheating issues from launch
Think Wootware handled this fine.

Use your Credit on a 4070 Super or even the 7900 GRE if you must go AMD.
You will have plenty of credit to spare for something else you might need.
For Eg: A 7800X3D and sell your 7600X.

Never had a single issue with my xfx 6800xt. Sounds like you should rather avoid the 7900xtx like @Petester said. Amd software is also tops. Woot handled this perfectly fine. Gl man.

im on my 2nd xfx card now (1st 6800xt now 7900xt) without any issue

I actually really like how they look super simple and premium looking.

Havent had a single issue with either... sound like the xtx is the problem in this equation.

The 6800xt i bought 2nd hand and the 7900xt i bought from wootware Recertified so not brand new... or i think maybe brand new just RMA unit

Woot in general handles all this much better than my friends at Evetech but to be fair I think even Evetech handles these things well as of late.

Take the store credit and get a 7900XT and move along swiftly.

Leave the rest in you balance sell your cpu and then add a bit and get a 7800x3d

Simple

Everyone winz

Dont know what you paid BUT on current pricing

XTX = 23k
XT = 16.5k
7800x3d = 8.8k

So you would just need to add R2300 to be able to get 7800x3d+7900xt and im sure your cpu would sell for more than 2.3k...

I wonder if you put 7600x + 7900xtx vs 7800x3d + 7900xt wich would perform better in games?

As @Oj0 has said, DOA isn’t applicable here. Faulty is also debatable as that problem could have manifested due to conditions in your case. It’s hard for you to prove it was shipped faulty after so long.

And yes, when I mentioned low end, I was referring to the brand. It’s probably about the lowest there is locally and that’s evident in their pricing for xfx cards.

I would take the store credit and upgrade to a better brand like Palit, gigabyte, MSI, Asus.

Good luck.

Appreciate the breakdown there good stuff. The problem childs are a 7900xt sadly. I think based on feedback ima look at a 4070/4070ti-Super Whats everyones thoughts on the 4070ti super worth or no?
