Deal Thread URL: [For Sale] - Gigabyte GTX1080Ti 11GB | Nvidia
Seller: @JaunE8520
Buyer: @bunnypants
Description of Bad Deal:
Some background, I had been looking for a white RTX 3060 or equivalent card as an upgrade for my girlfriend who has a GTX 1650s.
I came across Jaun's post for a white Gigabyte GTX 1080 Ti in "Excellent" condition on the 14th of February, the ad specified that the card will only be available in about 2 weeks, I was fine with this and did not mind waiting.
I PM'd Jaun on carbonite and he gave me his number so that we could finalize the deal on Whatsapp.
We agreed on arranging on the 19th that Postnet would be the best option for me to receive the card, he offered to cover the Postnet cost which was nice of him, I proceeded to pay the R3.5K for the card on that same day.
The next day he lets me know that he is packaging the GPU and he sent a photo of it on a sheet of bubble wrap with the fan side of the shroud facing directly up towards the camera, no other images, see below:
The card looked acceptable with some minor marks on the shroud but nothing alarming so I was not worried and did not feel the need to request more images (This was my mistake)
A day goes by with no updates so I followed up with Jaun on the 22nd, he then lets me know that he had not shipped the card yet and his reasoning for this was quite valid so I was not upset by it, he then arranged for his wife to book it in at Postnet later that day.
Today Jaun left a positive review for the deal before I had even received or tested the GPU, later today I checked the waybill tracker and saw that the GPU had arrived at my local Postnet.
I was at work at the time so I quickly left and collected it at around 2-3PM then went back to work. After work I went out to have dinner with my girlfriend.
After dinner I arrived home at around 08:00PM and caught up on some work (I am on after hours support duty for this evening as I work for a small ISP).
At around 9PM I had finished up my work and proceeded to prepare my girlfriend's PC to install the card, I had not unboxed it yet. I ran DDU on her PC then shut it down.
I then opened the Postnet package and and saw that the GPU was indeed in bubble wrap heaven as stated by Jaun in our Whatsapp chat when he was packaging it. This gave me confidence that the chances of the card being damaged in shipping was very slim.
I took the card out of it's box and the anti static bag and almost immediately felt that the shroud was somewhat loose, I then checked the corner where it felt loose and that saw the plastic stems that keep the shroud in place had been hot glued to the heatsink to hold it in place, the glue on the one corner came loose so the shroud was a bit saggy but it did not seem like enough to affect the cooling or the fans. I also noticed a GPU Worx sticker on the PCB so I assumed that the hot glue was their doing.
At the time of me noticing this during the unboxing I immediately asked Jaun if he was aware that the shroud was a little loose and that it was hot glued in place, I also asked if he was aware that it had been with GPU Worx at some point and if he knows why it was sent to them. See image below:
My Whatsapp message regarding the above did not go through to Jaun so I proceeded to install the card anyway to see if it works.
I did not mind a shroud that was hot glued as long as the GPU was being cooled sufficiently and the fans were working fine so I gave it a go to see if this was the case. I was also not too worried about the hot glue as to my knowledge it is only supposed to melt at 100c+ temps.
After installation the PC booted fine, all fans on the GPU spun up fine, I installed drivers and all was good. I then loaded up Heaven to bench it, the card held steady clocks and reached a temp of 83c for a few minutes then I heard a fan rattling sound, I had a look to see what was causing it and saw that one of the fans were clipping the heatsink because the hot glue had softened up which caused the shroud to come loose almost completely off the heatsink.
Below are some images for reference:
I notified Jaun of this immediately after it happened and sent him the images but my messages were still not going through to him as can be seen in the earlier image.
I feel obligated to open up a bad deal thread as I am not receiving any response from his side and the hot glue and GPU Worx aspect of the card was never disclosed to me by Jaun throughout our communication.
I understand that I bought a second hand card with no warranty but the card was advertised as excellent condition by Jaun when this is simply not the case.
I hope that with this thread we can reach some sort of agreement with regards to a refund/repair or something along those lines. I would like to mention that Jaun came across as a genuine guy throughout the whole deal and did not seem nefarious to me in any way, I do not want to have any bad blood with him because of this deal.
