Star Citizen - spiritual successor to freelancer and wing commander

so i am trying to purchase the game must i chose one of the ships and then the game is just $15+($45 for ship ) ?

No, just buy a starter package for example:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Mustang-Alpha-SC-Starter

This gives you one ship plus the MMO game. You will have to purchase the single player game separately if you wish. Buying the starter package will give you access to all the testing stuff you can play right now. You can then add standalone ships or upgrade that ship in the package to something else.

BTW, if you're gonna join then please make use of my referral code? We both get a bonus for doing so. STAR-6H59-TJTD

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/game-packages Ignore Squadron 42 if you only want the MMO part of the game. I bought the starter package mustang alpha, because when you melt it down they give you more in credits compared to the Aurora, or they did for me. But yeah personally the Aurora is way more durable than the mustang alpha I think, feels like a better starter ship.

So did they fix the fact that you have to re Download the game with every patch ?

Like they did say it was a goal of theirs a while back but hasnt happened yet, expect a 40gb dl, however it is out on ptu and the server is suffering big time so i wouldnt be surprised if the update is delayed again for a bit. i hope it is a quick fix that doesnt need to be delayed, got 3 weeks leave and was planning on putting in a good few hours haha

yip, and rumours are that it will be with this 2.6 release and all future release will be a patch system. no need to DL entire game again.

Please let me know when patch 2.6 is live Silv - im moerse keen to try but the idea of DL 40gb every patch is stupid

I heard that feature will come with 3.0. The guys on 2.6 PTU are downloading big updates still

The ptu dl is just over 30gb but because of my stupid line it doesnt make sense for me to dl it and rather wait for actual patch else i have to do it twice and in past experience the new version is normally a few gb bigger than the ptu. I deleted the ptu files after the 2.5 release so i dont really know if it would have just updated a bit or the whole thing.

I literally just picked up this game. Hoping for something epic. Will keep expectations in check though as I know it is still being made.

So, looks pretty badass but feels absolutely pathetic with mouse and keyboard which is weird because I can handle ED with MK but the flight controls seems a lot more sensitive in SC.

So my question is, do I get a HOTAS at some point or do I try a dual stick?

Have you tried an Xbox or equivalent gamepad for starters? Seen those being used in official demo streams, so should be pretty effective. Dual joysticks would be cheaper than hotas, but haven't tried it myself.

I have seen this route being taken as well but I am not sure if I want to try this. Feel like I could get closer to an immersive experience with the cheaper dual stick setup instead of going full immersive with HOTAS. Also, correct me if I am wrong, I feel like ED is slightly better suited to a HOTAS than SC? The flying mechanics are definitely slightly different I have noticed.

Agreed, gamepad will score lowest for immersion. I've played both ED and SC with my x52 and personally have not noticed a major difference between the two ( granted I haven't tried out the new flight mechanics in SC as yet).

I'm not sure how well the dual joysticks pan out without having a slide throttle though - having to keep constant pressure on one stick for throttle could become tiring.

At one point CIG were planning on releasing SC branded controllers from Saitek - and all were HOTAS types with slide throttles, so perhaps HOTAS would be the way to gl.

Yeah I guess so then. HOTAS are so damn expensive though. I don't know. It's really just SC that gives me problems. I've wanted to get a HOTAS for a while now for ED but I can still have a decent experience flying with keyboard and mouse. I don't find it too difficult. I will swap to HOTAS when I can afford it but for now I'm alright whilst flying in SC? Wow. Granted I've only played for 2 days now but still. I assumed that sims would at least be vaguely similar.

I vaguely recall something about Frontier deciding early on that they did not want to allow players operating as space cannons - staying stationary while yawing and pitching to fire upon moving ships - they felt this would kill the gameplay. As a result, they reduced the rate and which the ships can pitch and yaw.

It is this slower 'roll' rate that makes mouse and keyboard more manageable on ED.

CIG flight model is more physics based, so no such limitation exists. As a result, the pitch and yaw via mouse is extremely sensitive, which is probably what you are experiencing.

That sounds correct. Makes sense. It is definitely what I am feeling

Keep an eye out for a used x52 - they can be had fairly cheap.

Alternatively look into the Thrustmaster t16000m - one of the newer but more affordable HOTAS.

Isn't the T16000M just a Joystick? I have been looking and I thought it was just a joystick.

Ultimately I am not interested in the combat and fighting aspect of the game. I will probably get into it for relaxed trading and exploration so we shall see.

Check out the T.16000M FCS.

I went and bought the standalone Merlin because I wanted something that looked like a little sports car and boy does it deliver but again. Still need a proper flying system. Might consider melting down my Aurora or something. Not sure

The combat Aurora is epic. I used to take down heavy ships with my little Aurora with custom weapons on it. I said used to because I have been in NMS and Elite Dangerous for a couple of months now. Did the latest update at work and will be loading it onto my system on Monday, so I will have to relearn everything.

So I just had a little experience that I felt the need to share immediately so here it is. This really affirmed my belief in the game no matter how small the event was.

So I bought a little Merlin which I find super fun to jet around in around Crusader. Its a pretty great little "Sports-ship" lol. So I jet around and suddenly the game glitches me out of the pilots seat and sits me bang in space. I am not moving but the ship wizzes past and flies away. Cant see it anymore. Sit around thinking "well done, best respawn" but then I had an idea. I wanted to test proper immersiveness. I post in the chat that I am stuck in space and need someone to come pick me up. 2 people answer that they will try help. The one guy blows his ship up by mistake and so I have one more guy coming to rescue me. I am just floating and we are trying to give directions the best we can. Saying up and down really does not work in space but we figured it out. I sat idle in space for about 6 or 7 minutes while we tried to orient ourselves. we couldnt see each other until the last 30 secondsish because, size of space...duh. So anyway, I managed to spot him flying between me and the planet(the contrast between the ship and Crusader helped a lot). Then I base his directions on the way he is facing and tell him to go forward and backwards. Eventually he stops just above me and opens the cargo bay. I fly up and get into the ship. Not sure what ship it was but it had 5 or 6 seats lining each side so (in attempt for ultimate immersiveness) I sat down in one of the seats while he closed cargo bay and got back into the pilots seat. Then I just sit and wait the 30 or 45 seconds it takes him to fly back to Olisar and land and let me out.

I know it sounds extremely small and my brain might be the size of a peanut but that right there was probably the most fun I have ever had in a video game and really makes me hope they pull it all off. I was, and still am, giddy with happiness that we managed to do all that inside a game. Truly amazed by it. Seriously need a proper joystick system now.

I keep my eyes open for any multi crew ships and when I see a guy getting in, I hop in. Then I try hide as long as possible. If they spot me, it's already a shock; but even better is if they don't and they Eva out to fix a satellite or something... And then their ship gets jacked. Then they are stuck in space and I'm cruising around a freelancer or whatnot until I die! Mwhahahaha

Lol. This sounds super evil but also very clever. Will be attempting this tonight.

Perhaps, but so much fun. Besides, no serious consequences. I just know that guy is floating in space thinking to himself that he only has himself to blame. Reminds me of the "body hunter" in Firefly.

I haven't played since 2.4, but game is up to date. maybe it's time to get back into it.
