*sigh*
You go first: how is it pay-to-win?
Secondly: what is your expectation when buying this?

Ok. I think you're definition of pay-to-win is different from mine. I can explain it to you if you like, but I won't bother if you aren't open to reconsider. You're entitled to your opinion. But something beyond cosmetics costing money is not necessarily pay to win. It can be. But I believe in this case it's not. For the record, I only own an Aurora.
Your expectation is good: this not even an unfinished game yet. It is modules, parts, building blocks of what will become a game. And some of the blocks that I have had the privilege to play around with aren't even available any more. Having said that, the modules are already amazing. Flying the ship has a steep learning curve so I'm happy to get to learn that now already.
There's the hangar which has always felt like your home in all this vast expanse. Where you see your vanity purchases and whatnot.... And your ship. Sometimes I just lie in my bunk bed in my Aurora and think about freelancer (the game) and the good times we had how all this will feel when it's done.
The social demo, ArcCorp is also pretty cool and gives an indication of what it might feel like in populated areas. It feels a little like Mass Effect's Citadel but with more interaction and detail, even though it's far from done.
Then there's Port Ollisar (probably spelled wrong). At the moment this is the most exciting part as its like a small slice of what the universe will like. Missions, multi-player, dogfights, Eva, a little freedom, some warping... getting into someone else's Misc Freelancer and then high jacking it when they Eva out on a mission. That sort of thing.
This tech demo that will become a game is definitely a good purchase. Even now. It's fun to follow the progress and there's fun to be had.

Thanks for telling me what I can really expect.
I still don't see how you think it's not pay to win though. If I want to spend R5000 on a really good ship, with good weapons, good shields and engines, and more insurence, then essentially I'll be able to complete better missions, kill harder npc's and other players. I'll be able to do this way easier than someone who spends R400 on a ship.
Are people still playing this and is it worth the buy?
Also hows the latency?
Still? No, sir. It has even started yet. We're still a long way away from an alpha, but if you've followed development you will know it is being released in modules.
Yes, definitely worth the buy. No, I mean, like, really. No, like this is another level.
Haven't had issues with latency.

But early access is available?
Cheapest starter packages are $45.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/fly-now
If you purchase one of these you can download the client and start playing now.
As far as I know any ship your purchase will get you immediate access to the MMO portion of the game.
Squadron 42 package is for the single-player campaign.
But early access is available?
yip, you need to go to their site and buy a game package https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/game-packages which will come with a ship that you will use (can be upgraded to better ships later on if you want)
There are a couple of features available to play at present, pvp spaceship fights and fps fights (team vs team) you can solo que or play with mates, vandal swarm (pve, group of players against swarms of ai). then shapship races which is really awesome. Then there is the open world which has a few ports you can visit, a full working space station then a couple of saterlites and stuff that you get to do missions and fight pirates or other players both in spaceship and first person with guns and stuff.
On a bonus note a really big new patch launches today which has some cool stuff (12v12 fps games and stuff)
They realese new ships to fly often and often let you test out ships you dont own
I play quite a lot because its like having a bunch of games in one, however it is still in alpha and the netcode isnt quite at its greatest so the server can have quite a bit of lag which causes bugs like getting stuck in your ship and stuff
