By my reckoning, we have about 5.5 months of summer left in Gauteng both our studies (upstairs, so they seem to act as ovens as well)

So we want to put a ceiling fan in the wife's study; one that is
a) whisper quiet while moving enough air (not expecting Noctua ceiling fans here, but lets roll the dice)
b) has a light (I've seen decent looking ones without, and cant figure out why you would have a fan without a light in it)
c) works via remote (not switch nor pully thingies)
d) reasonably priced for what you get. They seem to range between 1600-2600.

Rather than trusting random people on Takealot and other places, let me try random people on Carbonite.

What say you? Any recommendations?

[Ps. not interested in aircons; that just give us both headaches]

kthxba

20x Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM.

Edit: Ignore, sorry. Thought it was in Smack Talk.

Good luck with finding!

Edit 2: Just read the post and saw he already beat me to the Noctua joke. I should probably delete this post 🤔

I have removed about 5 fans from our place all with lights, the things work fine and all but they really just move the air around instead of cooling you. Unfortunately they all pull to switch on but we got a remote that we wanted to connect to one of them that you can manage it via that.

On the fans with no light thing. We actually kept that one installed in the kitchen as it actually come in handy with flies as they don't seem to enjoy flying over the stuff that's under the fan even at low speeds when it's on so keeps then sukkers off the prepped food.

Might be better to look at maybe a vent/extractor fan up stairs if you really against the aircons. If you find the air to be dry hot maybe air coolers could also work for youz.

Try these guys. Their motors are excellent and you can design your own look and choose blade length. No balancing required. Had 3 in my old house and now have 4 in my new house. Very good fans

Get something that auto balances, it is worth the extra premium.

#1 stupid and silly - make sure it can take the standard B22/E27 type globes. we have one where the light is covered, and it uses a small screw in bulb - not a lot of light.

#2 stupid and silly - try and get one with more than 1 globe. light is your friend - especially if you get older, your eyes need more light

From having had pull string & remote - the remote is a gimmick and causes more issues than necessary.

Look for 4 blade fans & try by Retail Crossing.

I hate all the new fans with the flimsy lights in them where they barely light up a room and they tend to wiggle the globes loose. I'm still on the hunt for a decent ceiling fan, I currently have 3 in my place but they're all a great disappointment and were not cheapies

I used to stay at a place with a remote ceiling fan. Every time we would change the dstv channel, the light would go on and off. I don't recommend.

I bought 2x of these 3 weeks ago, will see how long they are going to last, but airflow is very good for a 3 blade fan…

Agree on the light fittings being weak & if you do choose one, a proper light bulb and not the tiny crappy tube ones.

Fully agree @Dom literally the best fans I've seen in ages I mistakenly gave to charity lol. Removed them from a property and they were perfect condition from a number of years ago... incredibly strong motors, great cooling potential and they had real light fittings on the lower portion but I was like I'll gift these away and just buy some newer better ones pffft.... newer better pffft lol

Heh. We stayed at an Airbnb place in Ballito recently that had a 3 blade and LED light fan, that thing was bright and quiet af, and moved enough air to cool you down. Maybe I should find out what they installed.

Thanks for the replies so far.

You can buy a relatively cheap sonoff switch made for ceiling fans on takealot or Banggood. Then it can work with a sonoff remote or your phone

First thing I bought off carb was a monitor but the courier fucked up and sent me a ceiling fan instead, quite the interesting reaction i had to the situation
