After overhearing a conversation about how terrible it is that TrueCaller uploads your contacts list to their servers I felt compelled to start this conversation.

Let's use TrueCaller, Google and Steam as examples. These are all entities that gather personal information about you; your name, age, gaming habits, hardware specs, location, movement patterns, browsing history, phone contacts, credit card details, home address...the list is endless.

So what?

The companies are reputable and generally have strong security in place. If they're going to share your data with other companies then they tell you, and those companies are in turn also reputable and secure.
Even if there is a data breach of some sort, so what? "Oh no! Some kid in the Ukraine has my location history, PC specs, email address, a hashed password and pictures of my dog! My world is about to end!" :|
Unless you're using that same email address and password for your online banking it means nothing, and even if you do the chances of that kid using the stolen data like that is minuscule. The chances of him doing so before you change your password? Even less.

What am I missing? Why are people so worked up about sharing data like this?

I say exactly the same when everyone goes on about "but mah privarcy!!!!" I can understand people moving away from WhatsApp when the ads arrive but WhatsApp is already owned by Facebook. All your conversations have been sent there. Big whoop

I think it is fear of the unknown, most people do not know what goes on behind the scenes, if I told my gran that google knew where she was for example, she would have a heart attack.

It's starts with data. Next thing they want to share your house, car, etc.......... (jaws theme song playing)Lol. But ja I could care less about this to.

The less info they have about me the better. Getting all those damn spam mails , telemarketing calls , calls with no one on the other side etc etc etc............its annoying.

If I get one more call which starts with "Ha'lo , is dis Mistir Jackooobous"

I never gave permission to any one to give my details, yet they have all my details, ID number , Initials da works.

I feel the same. When you tell people you have a Google account - "But, but... they can see everything you do...". I know, right, and who gives a fuck? If it somehow results in them putting a criminal who makes/distributes kiddie porn or something, why not.

And don't even get me started on the people who don't wanna use their real names on the internet. Lololol.

That's the flip side of the coin. Strictly speaking companies aren't allowed to contact you unless you've given them permission, but they schneaky schneak that permission into other agreements.
The CPA protects you here though; if you tell them to stop contacting you and remove your details they're legally obliged to do so and generally do.

True.

I just feel that you should not be too relaxed with what you share on line. Identity theft is not fun.

Specially if you have kids. Too many children are scared for life because of a stranger who said he is family since he had your info and thus the child thought the criminal is real.

Its not just protecting you, but also your family.

Telemarketers!
Applied for finance for a new toy and less than an hour later Outsurance gives me a call, says that they got info from Transunion that I'm buying a vehicle and would like to offer me a quote.

Normally I wouldn't mind, but the word "no" means nothing to them, and I'm still being spammed. [emoji35]

You want privacy, throw all your smart devices away, buy a pager, use a landline and get off the internet

Download my contacts list, photos videos, messages. Heck you even welcome to listen in on my phone convos. I simply don't give a fuck because I've always been conscious about keeping any personal or incriminating info about anything.

Snowden For the win haha

Here's the thing, if you tinfoil hat using Google for instance and use something like Ixquick or DuckDuckGo instead are you really tinfoil-hatting enough? You don't accept the promise of the faceless mega-corporation that they will not use your information for evil but you will happily accept the promise of the unknown unaccountable nobody promising you less data gathering? Who's to say they really don't? What if they collect even more than Google does?

Nah. My view is everyone out there is going to try screw me over with whatever they can get from me so I might as well not bother and just go the route of the least hassles without a care in the world.

Your parents named you Hoener ?!?!?

Lol

My point is, some sites require you to use your full name, and people are scared shitless to do it, so they avoid it and just don't signed up. Pretty stupid IMO.

A landline is just as susceptible to phone-tapping. The NSA knows all.

Everyone complaining about spam calls I have one word: Truecaller

Picked up the pizza guys name the other day when he called, was so fun greeting him at the gate with full name and surname and he's like "do I know you?"

Sort of reminds me of the "are you a wizard" meme hahahaha

Great, they're out of luck as I don't have a landline, but they can tap my mobile all they want to hear about my gran wishing me happy birthday.

"I live in an offline bubble" ... yeah right, you have an account on carbonite.

TrueCaller

I hate true caller. But I also love it. For me the benefits outweigh the blatant privacy issue. Maybe there is a way to have your number unlisted? IDK.

I think only the NSA really have the resources to listen in on all our conversations, and filter by keywords etc, I doubt our government would ever pull something like that off.
Maybe I'm going to start answering every call I receive with a list of keywords, and see if anything happens. like, "Hello, this is ISIS the Bomb New York speaking."

Public forum post scanner triggered.

Ah damn, I quoted you. Now I'm a "follower"

Anti-facial recognition clothing

In case you missed it, this is now also a thing..

EDIT: Actually that anti-facial recognition pattern kind of sucks, tried it with my phone, it only sometimes sees a face, unless that's the point and it get's overwhelmed?

By the way, did you watch either the Snowden movie or the documentary? Both of them freaked me out.
I just can't believe the optic-nerve of the NSA..

I feel very little for my so called privacy, it's not like I have anything to hide. I like cursing telemarketers and make them feel bad and it only happens maybe once a week. It's maybe cause I'm so chilled about life, I am easy going and that makes me happy.

Besides True Caller is pretty awesome, now I don't even have to answer insurance calls :) Basically sharing my data means nothing to me

People need to forget that name. He had an agenda just as much as any evil corporation or government entity. Perhaps it was as simple as wanting his name in in the history books, but perhaps it was to incite anarchy and mistrust in authority, perhaps it was something even more sinister.

We only know what we are told so why believe one source over another?

Yip, I find it irritating that people give a treasonous POS so much credit.

Such a loaded statement, why should we believe you over Snowden? Hmm?

It doesn't matter what his agenda is, he exposed asshole Obama and his Predecessors for what they are.. No fucking govt has the right to that information..

Maybe they did a study of "Die Rooi Gevaar" and decided they could sell their line of bullshit in that way.
