Bikers!?

It has 635km on the clock, I'm not going to pay R2500 for an oil/filter change...
So your engine is full of 6 year old engine sludge. I'd recommend oil, filter sand a spark plug - you can do it yourself., it's very easy. But I would do it, that's not great.

Completely agree with you on the DIY.
But sludge? I know it needs changing, but it's not as bad as you think. 😬

It won't be sludge, but the oil will no longer be up to spec.

Oil breaks down/changes composition over time - if the bike is just sitting there will be a chemical break down from the acids in used oil (even if slightly used) that will cause wear on your engine internally.
Add to that the degradation caused by cold starts & never really getting up to operating temp (your starting every few weeks) and you're causing excessive engine wear.

Also - did you expect the workshop to do the service for free? That's how it sounds? Which is ludicrous. Oil + filter + labour + their workshop = R2,5k is not unreasonable IMO. But it is an easy DIY.

But, after 6 years you should replace coolant too, as well as all brake and clutch (if applicable) hydraulic fluids as well.

While I don't care enough to argue the cost or paying a dealership for it, I have agree with the above gents.
Just do it yourself if you don't want to pay the/a dealership.

Buy motul(yes, I am a fanboy) for R500+- a bottle, I would say buy two bottles at this stage and do a flush
R400+- for a oil filter and you can DIY for <R1500 in roughly 2hours - But you have to do it yearly.

@Trompie67 is also right about the rest of the fluids, they are overdue for a replacement.

Bikes are already dangerous(read fun) enough out of the box, please don't make it worse by skimping on maintenance.

If you read or understand any standard maintenance schedules, your services are set at a certain interval OR annually, not the one you feel like.
You can argue whatever you want about the km, but cold starting it every few weeks for nothing and not understanding how maintenance works likely means your engine is in worse state than an engine with 50 times your current mileage that has had proper maintenance.

Couldn't agree more with the above suggestions. All the fluids need to be replaced ASAP. I won't even start the bike with that old oil. That oil is filled with petrol from all the cold/rich starts and also lots of moisture from just standing the whole time. At this stage, new cooking oil would be better than the current sludge in the engine.

I probably should've explained better what I meant by not being willing to pay for every service.

I meant that the dealer would charge me for servicing the bike even with a service plan in check. I thought it would've worked the same(or similar) as with cars, that any approved dealership would be able to service it. So, it isn't an issue about servicing...

All of you are correct. She needs some "refreshing".

The variety of individuals on this forum is fantastic. I received advice/tips about things I knew little about, things that matter and can have consequences. Not just on dem wallet, but physically too.

Thank you, gents!

That raises another question, where did you find a bike with a service plan ?
Or am I simply in the dark here ? Never heard about it before.

I might have used the wrong terminology...

possible, but the context was right ? :ROFLMAO:

On the topic of "optional extras" on bikes, BMW is the market leader with exceptional after sales support and a 5 year warranty on some bikes when buying new (after July 2020/2021) .

All downhill from there with 1-2 year warranty's and questionable after sales support (looking at you KTM)

Bought my Yamaha new and I only got a one year warranty with it.

@Wacko_ZA might be able to shed some light on the topic, he has more experience than I do in the field.

No bike that i know of has a service plan. Fire it up offered a thing where you pay less for services on a bike bought from them and serviced there but not sure its a thing anymore.
Warranties are real.
In my ducati days i had a few.
I had a friend drop a valve on his brand new s1000rr and bmw sa replaced entire motor under the 5 year warranty.
Bike services for the most part are not as expensive as cars.
When you do valve clearances it can get a little pricey but when you buy your scoot you start saving for it.

Yes, warranty sounds better!

I just repeat what the ou-toppie said to me when I bought the bike.

Anyone perhaps want to import something from revzilla ?
Want to order a part, but the part is $20 and the shipping $40.

Before I waste money and buy more shit I don't need, want to know if someone would want to split shipping.

they shipping to ZA again?

USPS, so yes. pity. i've had so many problems with the post office that i won't ship anymore unless it's a tracked courier.
Yea I might just go via AGS and buy some extra stuff to "justify" the shipping costs

Why can't we have the zx25r here :(

Also can't wait to pickup a motorcycle soon. Just busy sorting our finances and insurance as mentioned before. Outsurance said they reevaluated my cost on a Ninja 400 from R2800 down to R2500.......

Fuck outsurance; go to a motorcycle broker.

Quadsure, ironhorse are two very solid options.

I also recently learned about the 250cc 4cyl. Thing sounds mental going 120

I'm dissapointed... Only recently? The thing has been out for a while now. Not that you can get it in SA or Europe

I didn't even pay that on a brand new KTM 1290Sduke or BMW S1000R.

You are definitely not looking at the right people.
Check Ironhorse or something.

Outsurance quoted R3,200 on my Duc Streetfighter. Aon did it for R575

When it came time to claim, got the option of taking it somewhere or getting a payout. Cash cleared in my account 5 days later

Is AON not a reinsurer? Were you able to insure with them directly?
