Yeah, yeah, it's macOS not Mac.

Anyway, I'm currently one of one employee within our division who's running a "non-standard operating system". In other words, I'm not running Windows 10 on my workstation. Instead, I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

The climate is changing and pretty soon I'll be asked to re-image my machine and run Win10.

My question to all ye Carbies, has anyone here switched from Linux to macOS and how far are you from seppuku? Is this doable? Should it even be tolerated as a discussion?

Its not iOS, its macOS.

Anyway, It depends what work you are doing, Mac is rather similar to Ubuntu relatively speaking.

Just goes to show how little I know about the Cult.

I'm a software developer; mostly back-end systems. There's obviously bits of documentation etc and for that I use my Windows desktop. LibreOffice and its ilk are really poor alternatives.

I love the command line and use it a heck of a lot throughout the day. Typically I'm writing scripts to facilitate quick hacks, or fetch & clean data etc etc. Then there's the SSHing into remote machines for debugging and monitoring. And of course, for looking like I know what i'm doing when the boss is around.

And blimey, I really don't know why I do not get notifications in time. Tapatalk, she's the sheet.

First of all, it's not a 'cult'. Just with that, I'd say load Windows instead. Clearly you're not a fan of macOS.

I made a switch from Linux to macOS due to the fact that I could simply install home-brew and I basically have everything that a UNIX machine would have.

I am a terminal guru. I love my Linux OS's but for looks, design and simply running a "normal" os with all the UNIX perks would be macOS.

Although, I made custom scripts to run macOS on my Desktop (non-apple machine). That was the biggest pain. Since I got it installed, I made sure to setup Time Machine (for a coder Time Machine is BOSS).

I do miss Linux though. Arch is King.

Seriously Windows ? 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮

You must hate your computer to use such a vile Operating System, unless you're a gamer and forced to use Windows😂

FYI: Windows has a disabled unix function, simply enable and install it using the CMD. Bob's your uncle you have Linux in Windows no VM needed.

Windows is quite versatile when it comes down to gaming/coding/running linux in windows etc. I don't do much gaming thus I HATE WINDOWS with a passion...

Emulating a few Linux commands at the command prompt is not running Linux

Using a VM for some random runs now and then is cool. But it's really not a viable option for my needs.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Maybe if you gave it a try you would have seen that windows LITERALLY Installs the complete Ubuntu (latest).

"Emulating a few Linux commands at the command prompt is not running Linux"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. If you gave it a try you would have noticed it's not emulating anything is the actual Ubuntu installed within Windows.

Bro, I have a certificates for a reason. Im not sure if you just replied without taking the time to actually check if what I am saying is correct.

MacOS is the best version of *nix.

Ubuntu is alright but MacOS trumps it in every single way and you can command line away as you do now while having and overall much more polished experienced.

I worry though when a software developer doesn’t even know what the OS is called. Especially one open minded enough to run Linux.

What makes you think they’ll allow MacOS though if they are pushing for Windows?

Don't know what certificates you are talking about but I suspect they are all windows based if you feel that Windows subsystem for Linux is true Linux.

It's an emulation to run elf packages and allowing X11 applications (which has been possible using xming in Windows through an SSH connection to a nix box for decades now.

It is not running the Linux kernel at all, nether is it using the any of the Linux file systems and /or security.

very cool
One windows exploit a year and people lose their shit, linux it's hardly newsworthy if there's an exploit.

😂😂😂😂😂 Lol I am no fan of Windows but that is the only platform that supports all the games. From my perspective, you are NOT reading first and simply typing without thinking. Not sure what gave you that idea I enjoy windows. 😂😂😂

mehhh moment..... Thanks Captain Obvious. READ my posts first.

Urgh, So what you are telling me is, if your a gamer and developer you are not going to install that nifty little ubuntu into your Windows terminal so that you can install the needed tools (LAMP) to run your webserver?

I guess not because you looking for security in a dev environment. LETS remove the fact that many who search for LAMP on windows would prefer using Ubuntu that's installed because it makes life easier. You simply jump onto the CMD and run apt-get or whatever you want to. You are able to chmod and so forth.

It seems that you are the type of person always looking for something wrong. So you probably use XAMPP / MAMP PRO just because you can hit a button and boom it's installed.

Don't use the ubuntu in windows if you don't like it. I simply stated its possible to directly install Ubuntu within windows and have MOST commands available at your finger tips. STOP looking for something wrong with Windows and how they embedded Ubuntu inside. They did it, yaay be happy, move on. I hate windows but if you want to play a game and code, you not going to install freaking CentOS now are you?

if you run a web server at home = Stupid
Creating Test Dev Environment Locally = Smart. hmmm, but does that local machine really need a security patch when the MACHINE NEVER will hit the internet ? NO (Sometimes if you are using port forwarding).
Connecting to Web Server (not local) = Excellent. Meaning you have a server to connect to using SSH. Will the simple tool in the ubuntu install work hmm lets see YES. You can connect using the cmd now. Instead of downloading putty or some other 3rd party non-sense.

Enjoy your day

Sooo,

It's been a few months? Share your findings please!

I use macOS, Centos, Ubuntu and Windows on a daily basis. macOS to rule them all!

There's nothing wrong with using XAMPP or MAMP Pro for a local development environment ...

Well, the Mac idea fell flat because the IT department decided to go back on that offer.

It turns out though that if you have a mature discussion with the right people then pretty much anything is possible. I got dispensation to maintain my Ubuntu installation.

So, nothing to see here really.

There are other solutions to your problem, you should examine all possibilities.:p
There's also something to be said about adapting to an environment and finding the best way to be effective within it; external limitations not withstanding.

I agree, however some environments simply aren't worth adapting to.

And in this industry failing to adapt to change will be your downfall sooner or later. Technologies come and go and so does the viability of the environments they run in.

You are arguing a different point, I said that "some environments" aren't worth adapting to.

My point is that if you are in IT and your organisation wants to force you to run Windows or something while you are running QubesOS (or some setup with VM isolation) then you have to consider whether you want to work with that company.
