Hi,

I'm shopping for an access point that also has an additional ethernet port i.e. 1 port to receive the network, 1 to provide another connection.

Or do they all become routers at that point?

Cheers

Yeah from what I have seen this is router territory. Hardware wise (with the exception of modems) this is the only hardware difference between a wireless router and access point, from the it is software that differentiates. Just get a router, disable the dhcp server, put it on your subnet and plug it in.

One thing to note, if you buy a proper AP like the Unify APs, the wifi range will usually be better than most wifi routers. Why not just get n cheap hub. Lay one cable from you router to the hub and plug your AP in the hub and then you have more ports to use on the hub as you see fit.

Ubiquiti's UAP-AC-IW is ideal for new and retrofit installations. The UniFi® AC In-Wall is designed to convert an Ethernet wall jack into a dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi access point with two Gigabit Ethernet ports. It features scalable, dedicated Wi-Fi per room, easy Setup, Monitoring, Control and two, fast 802.11ac radios.

I have an account with Scoop if you are willing to collect direct (you can pay them direct)

Pretty sure this is what you're looking for:

I have the older version and they're great bits of kit. Don't let the internal antenna put you off; they're pretty strong.

I'm confused? They all cost round about the same so unless you already have something just get a wireless router as you need?

Most routers can become access points like this with little hassle.

But most things actually named Access Points normally have a 4-5 port ethernet switch included.

@Nara Mikrotik is another whole can of worms. Jump in only if you know what you're doing

THe basics of a Mikrotik are SUPEr easy via the GUI IE DHCP server & PPPOE.

You can get the Unifi Pro AP's , which have 2x Gb LAN ports. Routing ability won't hurt a AP as such, but a pure AP will have more $ invested into its AP abilities (generally). What are you wanting to do?
