Hi all!

I am moving to the US for 11 months and I would like to setup a way to remote desktop into my PC (which is staying in SA) from my laptop which I am taking with.

I have got the Windows 11 Remote Desktop Connection client working on my LAN, however I have no clue how to get it working across networks. I'm unsure how safe port forwarding would be for something as "critical" as remote access and I've never used a VPN.

Any advice/help is appreciated!

Parsec works lekker for gaming.

I replaced Anydesk with Rustdesk just if I need to do file transfers which Parsec does not do.
Awesome thanks.

I also have Rustdesk loaded as a backup, going to have a look at Parsec now.

Use Tailscale · Best VPN Service for Secure Networks

Recommends parsec as well. can't go wrong with it.

Anydesk or teamviewer to wake on lan (if computer supports it) and to start parsec if it does not start automatically.

RDP is not worth the hassle to set up if you don't specifically need it for something special.

Many secure ways to skin this cat - Zerotier, Wireguard/tailscale, Cloudflare or if you want more local control, drop a Mikrotik HAP Ac2 into the LAN and setup its VPN (or the other solutions I mentioned as they are supported). Then just connect from your laptops VPN client.

I've setup a RDP for my PC, most call me crazy but I have a secure password that won't be hacked anytime soon.

What you need to do is get a dynamic dns, open a port in your router for your PC, eg mine is 47789 on private IP 192.168.0.2 (you will need to setup a static ip on your PC outside your DHCP scope or just use IP reservation on your router)

Enable RDP access in windows (settings->System->Remote desktop) and change the RDP port in registry editor to the one you used in the router (47789)

Then when you trying to RDP you will use <dynamic dns hostname> and the port you used eg:
thisismyhomepc.ddns.net:47789

Yea you're a bit crazy, cause quite a few of the vulnerabilities do not need user credentials to exploit :ROFLMAO: ;).

In the past ive seen a lot of audit failures in event viewer, they seem to have stopped recently.

I would assume if they were able to get in it would kick me off the desktop? I have not experienced that.
