I've been having some weird internet Gremlins which I am baffled by.

There was a couple of cable breaks on Thursday (21 March) and my internet connection has been very wonky ever since then...

So basically I notice my download speeds have been plummeting from +-940mbps to as little 5 mbps on Friday (22 March) 15:00PM, uploads have been mostly unaffected.

So I report the issue to Cool Ideas and they ask me to test by directly plugging in to the ONT and setting up PPPOE connection, did that and 3 tests got around +-400mbps down (roughly the same as what the router was getting, although a lot more consistent).

Anyway plug the router back (ASUS TUF-AX5400) and notice its struggling to even get 10mbps, so unplug it and do direct to ONT again and bam 975mbps. So now I start questioning if maybe router is gone wonky, do a factory reset and setup again and still getting erratic speeds between 10-90mbps.

Now getting more puzzled so try a different router (Archer C5 with OpenWRT), initially gets 400/400 which is probably a hardware limitation with such a weak chipset so then I bring out another big boy my ASUS AC-88U. I do a factory reset and set everything up, first couple of tests were around +-300 mbps download. Now more confused than ever because surely the AC88U has enough grunt to manage more than 300mbps??? Then miraculously a few minutes later and just after 23:00PM boom 940mbps consistently...

So now I start thinking maybe the AX5400 is gone faulty, anyway leave the AC88U plugged in and monitor it, Woke up today and still getting constant 900+ mbps. Then all of a sudden when I test now at 16:00pm guess what, behaving just like the AX5400 with downloads bouncing between 5-50mbps. So then I plug the cable directly to the ONT again and instantly 940 mbps...

I have no idea WTF is going on, I have checked all cables (CAT6 all round) are plugged in properly and that ports are negotiating properly at full duplex Gigabit. The very strange thing to me is this has now twice occured just after 15:00PM, are my routers magically becoming Demon possed at that time? (I've also checked the Router CPU temps just to make sure it isn't thermal throttling for some reason) I'd put the blame on Cool Ideas but direct to ONT seems to be fixing the issue most of the time...

At the moment Cool Ideas Support have escalated the issue with Zoom Fibre (The FNO), but surely if it was a physical layer issue then more people would be affected, my friend from not too far away has consistent 900+ with Afrihost?

I am completely mystified by this issue and I turn to you my fellow carbies for advice..

It gets even better, lost connection while typing this out directly plugged into ONT...:D

Do you have a Raspberry Pi or some sort of spare device running Linux you can install Smokeping on?

On Cool ideas...and having the same issue as well...it seems like an ISP problem. Had this Thursday day as well....and it was fine Friday morning. Was fine the entire day today, it started again towards the evening part...

You guys are aware there has been a break on WACS(iirc)? ISP's are rerouting, but it will be affecting our local speed for weeks at least until fixed, especially when general traffic is heavy.

Cool Ideas on Openserve 500Mbps coincidentally on the same model ASUS Tuf AX5400 router, no speed issues the whole night.

Maybe its a Zoom Fibre issue.
