Hi guys (and gals),

Was hoping someone could help me out with an issue I'm having...

PC was working perfectly for a long time (since end-2018). All of a sudden stops booting. Fiddled around a bit and it turns out it can boot but only if 1 RAM stick is in. If I put any more sticks in, no dice, boot failure.

Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3600 8gb x 4
ASUS ROG Z370 Maximus 10
Intel i7 8700k.

Anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Try disabling xmp while with one stick on then try putting in the another stick so you have dual channel. See if it boots with the two and if so try adding the other two.

If doesn't want to boot in dual channel try putting 2 ram next to each other (this will not be dual channel) and see if it then boots.

What he said. You either have a faulty memory controller, slot or dimm. Go back to basics with one dimm and work your way back up one step at a time.

Tried disabling XMP. No joy.

Anyone know a place or a guy who can help fix the issue?

You can follow a good diagnosis video and test different RAM slots and DIMMs.

That being said, I’m sure that a Carbie would be willing to assist.

Has anything changed in your case?

You also can't exclude a subtle shift in how the CPU sits as it can also mess with the memory. Reseating the CPU might be all that is needed.

1. CPU could be damaged, even just 1 corner can be splitting or bent and it will make issues.
2. The CPU cooler you have on might perhaps flex your motherboard too much and causing issues in the PCB circuitry.
3. have you tried each individual stick that the slot (i assume its in b2 slot when it boots, and a2 b2 doesnt boot.) you can try (a1 b1 see if it boots, if not try b1 and see if it boots).
4, Check CPU socket for bent pins, could be how small bend but can cause this.
5. check for any discoloration on the contact side of the CPU aka burn spots (they usually darker than the normal gold color).
6. with one stick, disable XMP , let it boot into windows, switch off, insert 2nd stick and boot up, if it shows DRAM light again its most prob 1, 2, 3, 5.
7. CPU paste is shot(Dried up almost like glue, so if you have to use force to split the cooler and the cpu it would be most prob have burned spots under the CPU which means your cores got damaged.

last resort with one ram in b2 slot, enter BIOS, factory it , check what version is your MB firmware and see if there are updates, sometimes update can sort this.

had exactly the same issue a while back building up a PC, and it was the cooler that was top heavy so the flex on motherboard was too much and thats with the coolers backplate it comes with.
another build i did was an Intel build, the guy had a similar situation, and i checked everything, CPU paste was rock solid, burn marks on the die, 1 small half degree bend and ended up screwing the MB and Ram both dead.

make sure your ram slots are dust free, the cpu is seated correctly and the board is not flexing, and the paste is good still. and check the above mentioned ones.

I think you may be having the same issues as this. One memory channel is messed up on the cpu

The corner of a Ryzen CPU seems to be NB for memory channels. Seen two with corner impacts lose channels. I've had two gen 6/7 Intel boards with a similar problem. One had a pent pin on the board and the other, it turns out, just hated the CPU that was in and worked fine once a different CPU was put in (the CPU worked fine on other boards).
