Hi All,
Is it possible to setup a mail server to download existing email from your domain to there respective folders.
Then the email clients connect to the mail server via the IPaddress instead of mail.domain.com

So basically the email server is a backbone to download new emails from the server but doesnt act as a stand alone internet mail server

Your question is confusing.

Do you want to sync the mail on old server to the new server? This is possible, one example of a tool that can do this is imapsync.

The parts that confuse me are

Then the email clients connect to the mail server via the IPaddress instead of mail.domain.com

Connect to the ip address of the new server instead of the domain of the old? Sure. Can be done. Assuming it's a static ip.

So basically the email server is a backbone to download new emails from the server but doesnt act as a stand alone internet mail server

The new server is the backbone to download new emails from the new server? Again yes. But it would have to act as an Internet mail server.

Reading between the lines, are you trying to have it that when a mail is sent to old server, it's then relayed to the new server, and the users download from the new server rather than the old? I suppose this is possible, but it's clunky, and I am not seeing the purpose for this?

Please clarify.
