Keyboard Nut Thread

Please show us when you get them!?
Will do bud!

Bought about 7 sets. Have a Dactyl Manuform ready for switches and wiring, need to build one for my dad as well. Then a quiet Atreus50 for traveling purposes...

The rest are to test switches and maybe build one or two bespoke boards to sell, will see how it goes.

This looks great! These are 3D printed, right? Any specific reason you went for the 5 x 6 and not the 6 x 6 config?

Yessir! I bought a 3D printer end of last year and was eager to print this to see how well my printer will do. So I printed the fist manuform file I could find.

Since I started actually changing the layout and programming my ergo dox a bit, I hardly ever use the '1-0' row. So I still have things to figure out in the coming weeks. When the switches arrive I will commit to a variant and print that frame.

opinion on the all metal in one of Linus' latest videos?
The chassis and board in general are quite common among the enthusiast community. KBDFans have quite a few kitd with allu cases. They make for great sounding thocs and clacks.

Those keycaps though... absolute envy.

It is also important to note that it is absolutely barbaric that Linus tested the sound of the board without first completing it. It is just standard keeb etiquette to wait until the board is finished before testing the sound.

Spent the weekend using my mx brown Ducky again for the first time in months... I am having a really hard time getting used to the standard layout again. And these browns are so soft. Can't imagine why I was so inlove with this setup before. Just shows you how volatile and temporary mechanical keyboard preferences are! :D We need one of each please.

How much difference is there between the Ducky browns and something like Gamidas browns? I'm considering the "Ducky One 2 RGB - Cherry MX Speed Silver" as I'm wondering if I should cheap out or go big on my keyboard.

Oooh that is a loaded question my friend... BMW vs Merc?

So Ducky uses Cherry MX switches. And Gamdias uses Gateron switches afaik.

So your question is actually Cherry MX Brown vs Gateron Brown in the switch department. This is largely preference. Personally I enjoy the Gateron browns more. They're less scratchy (read smoother) and their tactile bump is more prominent. This will be different for everyone, but the majority of the community agrees. Cherry makes the worst browns available.

With regards to build quality, the difference between the two are incomparable. Ducky used to be known for their astounding build quality and general quality overall. Whereas Gamdias is targeting the 'below R1000' market. Gamdias also uses cheap abs, lazer etched keycaps. Ducky uses double shot PBT keycaps.

It all comes down to what you want? The switches, keycaps, and overall build are all measured independently, with different metrics.

Do you care about the quality of products? Do you notice when something is made out of leather vs pleather? Can you appreciate the difference between a R500 tekkie and a R2000 one? Are you okay with a R5000 mattress, or could you see why a R25000 might be better and worth the investment? Do you notice when you are walking on a real Persian carpet vs. a knock off? All depends on where you will notice a difference, what your budget looks like and which switches you like.

Here is a neat way of adding homing identifiers on F and J to DSA caps:

I ordered 200 balls and a pin vice from Amazon. If anyone would like to do this in Gauteng drop me a PM, you are welcome to swing by for a beer and some keycap drilling. (nohomo)

Jailhouse blues in the making. Anyone else tried this before? Does anyone know where I can buy tiny o-rings locally?

ps. The parts are laid out on papertowels to dry off the rubbing alcohol they have from cleaning.

PSA: Evetech has some Outemu blue boards available for dirt cheap. I'm picking one up tomorrow to strip for some macropads I have planned.

That's ridiculously cheap. Pity that the red switch variants start at double the price - MARVO KG954G Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Best Deals - South Africa

So what's the latest gents?

Anyone got any new boards, keycaps, switches?

I managed to finally secure a 1993 Model M, right here on Carb. :D Seller should ship sometime this week. I've been wanting a Model M for quite awhile, but could never source one from my birth year. Super excited to add this one to my collection.

As a bonus, he also bundled a terminal (rj11) Model M, with some missing keycaps. Hoping to source the missing caps (or 3D print them), and then use a Pro Micro to convert the board to USB.

Oh man that's my birth year, very cool. I bought a Model M a while ago off carb and it's from '89, it is an absolute tank of a keyboard and the one I got is mint condition (minus missing the sticker beneath the keyboard). It's nuts to think it's older than I am and still working like it's brand new.
I hope you like heavy switches because the buckling springs are about 70g. My weak baby fingers can't type very quickly on it compared to my lighter boards (cherry red and topre at the moment).
It's super satisfying although your neighbours may start complaining :D

Only thing I've done is replace the keycaps on my K68, loving the pudding keycaps

My birth year as well! I've waited so long pulling the trigger on one cause I could not find a '93 variant. Until this came up...

I've typed on buckling springs before, so luckily I have a good idea what to expect. This won't be my daily driver though. Mainly to add to the collection. The neighbours are already kept busy busy with the Box Jades in my ergo dox. :ROFLMAO:

What an awesome thread😊😊
I've become a fan of 60% keyboards cause I game a lot and like the extra space

Glorious GMMK compact with Kalih Purples. The awesome thing is that you can easily swap switches on this.

And then really looking forward to Rebeltech to get the Ducky Mecha Mini in stock

I've only ever owned Romer-G keyboards. The G910 Orion spark then downsized to the G410 Atlas Spectrum.
I've typed on many switches and my favourites have to be the Gateron Blues.

It's all theory for now but i've spent many hours on aliexpress building what in my hypothetical opinion is the best keyboard, the recipe goes like this:

PCB: GK64
Case: CNC Aluminium case
Switches: Kailh Box Navy
Keycaps: These side printed ones

Never built a keyboard in my life but as soon as I'm able I'm building this :D
@R3aL1Ty

Why do I like this idea for your new KB so much?

@PandaAttack1 @JollyJamma

Thanks for the mention and help :D

That keyboard build looks really epic, Im a pleb when it comes to building keyboards though xD

I kinda just want a really decent mech keyboard, something that also is a bit durable.
Been looking at either the Ducky One 2 or the corsair K70 Brown switches.

I use my keyboard as much for work and studies as i do for gaming, so a keypad is highly critical to my work...
I dont want over loud clicky because that does really get annoying and quickly.

Im not sure, any other kinda info i need to add for a keyboard recommendation ?

That's perfect.

Look, it all comes to what you would be happy with on your desk and what your budget allows. People have written amazing software and entire novels with rubber dome boards.

If you want something somewhat silent, with a tiny bit of tactile feedback; Cherry/Kailh/Gateron browns are a great option. There are many commercial and 'gaming' boards available to choose from.

Almost all mechanical keyboards are really reliable, and should last you a long time. If you are purely looking for a sleek, workhorse of a keeb then Ducky is a great option. I used a K70 for 3 years as my main board at work before I got more into keyboards.

If you want something more 'exotic' and special, we can look for something else.

You always have the option to buy some keycaps when your budget allow to give the Ducky/K70 a custom touch.
