Keyboard Nut Thread

As some of you know, I have been trying some alternative lubes. The purpose of this was to find a Krytox alternative that is available locally.

I have not found a 100% replacement yet, but what I have found is something still perfectly useable. Especially if you want to try your hand at lubing, and still experience the feel and sound without the major premium that comes with Krytox and the like, If you are are lubing expensive switches or want to have the best lube experience, stick with Krytox/Tribosys.

Our winner: Lucas oil's Factory Team Silicone Shock Fluid @ 80w. (1000cst) Coming in at R150 for 60ml. I bought mine from Jix Hobbies in Pretoria.

This sits perfectly between a thick and a thin lube. It's staying power seems to be fine and it is fairly easy to apply with a small brush. During all my tests, it did not become sticky after time and seems to hold up well. If this lasts a year, I would count it as a definite win.

I tested with Gateron Yellows, Cherry MX Reds, Gateron Reds and Outemu Browns. I also lubed the sample set with Krytox 205g0 and failed a blind test almost every time. The Krytox does have a slightly different sound, but they felt near identical to me. Without an A/B comparison, I wouldn't be able to say which is which.

Out of curiosity, I ended up lubing my entire Redragon 60% to see if I can improve the feel of Outemu browns. PS: Outemu switches are an absolute bitch to open.

Here's a short sound test comparing stock and lubed Outemu Brown switches with the Lucas oil product;

It's been close to a year since I applied the Lucas oil. I still have my tester with the Gateron Red switches and the outmu brown board (seen some use). Almost time to revisit and do some testing!

Hey guys. For better or worse I'm building some custom keyboards. Will post some pictures when I'm done.

Did want to ask if anybody has done the o-ring mod on the tofu60 case? I need to find some appropriate o-rings or order some. Was hoping that somebody might just have some lying around.

hey guys has anyone tried the gamkay lk67 ?
will post a link below it seems pretty cool for the price and it is 2.4ghz wireless, only problem is it seems only to be available from bangood, and even though they are not as bad as wish I don't trust our post office to make delivery

Hi, I have one of those that I bought from them.

Banggood uses Buffalo couriers and you should be able to get the keyboard in about 2-3 weeks. 👌

Oh yeah did not read the amazon part haha. Yeah they are fast, but expensive if you get express shipping haha.
Thanks man. How is the board out of the box? Does it need to be lubed and the stabilizers filed with?

I am pretty sure it doesn't come with lubed stabs and even if it does, I would always remove, tune and relube.

Sorry if I am a pain and asking too many questions. But did you buy the switches and keycaps from there as well? And if you don't mind asking how much did it come to?
I have priced it with gateron yellows and have found titan ice have the new ( razer phantom keycaps for 699 which brings it to a little over 2k.

I didn't buy one from there however there is a fully built version for about 300 more which includes switches and caps.
Don't think there are yellow switches but probably your cheapest starting point.

Hey there. Are you referring to the Redragon Kumara? Out of the box the keyboard is meh, you need to lube the stabs and the switches need to be lubed if they are not clicky, but after that, it sounds real good, plus outemu switches have tight housings, so they are nice overall switches.

Thanks I saw this. Not sure how I feel about the color scheme. I have an idea in mind just don't have the budget to do it 🤣

I gathered that much.
It's a good starting point.
Get a full keyboard and upgrade from there.

Don't worry I was the same when I saw it but for the price, I don't think anything comes close.

Just my suggestion.

Good luck down the rabbit hole.

It's the rabbit hole that scares me to be honest. Besides just the keyboard my goal is a full wireless setup so changing my mouse and headset too. But my pc also needs upgrading, lol.
I wish I had could use the gta cheat codes in life some times.
But thank you for your input honestly I really am trying to get the lk67 and try and build it up

Hey guys, I just wanted to post here to ask if anyone has experience ordering to South Africa from Akko? I read earlier in the thread that someone got an email back from them saying that they'd ship items with Buffalo Couriers. Did that ever happen/did anyone try do that?

I want to order a DIY kit like the ACR75 and probably some keycaps and switches. Will get lube here. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

@ctrlshiftesc_za

Look at his website, there are a few Akko products there

Also, does anyone have a link for a nice 0-R1000 keyboard with linear Black switches?
