Keyboard Nut Thread

Don't get me started on iso layouts.... -_-

@Ant_Shrew , that is unfortunate... Would've like a solid comparison. My dad recently bought an ergodox with quick switch slots on the pcb... Tempting to buy a set of khail blues for him to try in contrast to the silent mx reds he chose. Converting everyone to tactile switches slowly but surely... :p
Im sure there are other people around with some to test.
You need to come have a look at my work with everyone converting to Mechs now

We were 5 in a small room at one stage, with 3 of the guys doing report writing. Must say, it sounded quite intense in there with all the constant clacks. :D

Those look awesome! First time hearing of them, which is surprising since I used to live on the mechkeyboard subreddit. Very clean design. Nice nice nice!

It also HEAVY AF, so it doubles as a club if someone should ever decide to attack me in the office :p

That is the positive thing with most mech boards, they are super heavy, making it feel like a premium product... (which most of them are not...) Looking at you otemu!

Sooo if someone were to buy his very first Mech keyboard, what should they go for?
Main thing is some casual gaming after work and over weekends.

As you can probably see from the thread, that most of us here have not settled on just one... So with that said, any mech board in your budget. The switches are more important than the actual board though... :D

So you will need to figure out which switches you like... Which can be a daunting experience, again, that is why most have us here have multiple boards with different switches.

The most common gaming boards have mx Reds I guess. For typing the most popular is mx browns. Then there is a whole range of other switches in between.

First thing, think about the kind of switches you want. Do some research, everyone has different switch preferences. Then look at layout. What sized keyboard would you like.

Hotswap man. You only need one keyboard, and a drawer full of switches

Ah, fair enough... But who commits to 'just one board' if there are so many variants out there to smash? No one should have to commit to just having one board for life. :p

Corsair K90 (Mx Red)
Gamdias Hermes Ultimate (MX Blue)
CM Quickfire (MX Blue)
Kinesis Freestyle Edge Split (Mx Brown)

Obviously, I get board really quickly with my keyboreds.

How do you like that Kinesis man? Been looking at that board every so often...

It is a very interesting and pleasant board. One barely used one popped up on carb with the added tent kit for at absolute steal, and I thought it was worth the risk. I had my doubts at first, but I adapted to it within a couple of minutes, and it is a very smooth and comfortable typing experience. My fiancee is a graphic designer, and mainly uses it in her home office as her drawing tablet fits perfectly between the two sides when at their max distance. It makes for a very streamlined desktop! Have you tried any Gamdias boards by the way? I have only tried two (including the one I own) and have been very impressed.

I'm using a ROG Claymore for daily use.
Makes typing just a bit more difficult because of having a UK layout instead of a US layout (shorter shift key and some other changes).
I don't know what the suppliers were thinking when they brought in a UK ISO layout, instead of one of the US layouts that 99% of the boards in ZA are. I bought one of these boards, opened the box, saw UK layout and returned it the next day. I wasn't in the mood for constant typos when switching between all my other keyboards/laptop/etc..

Really disappointing since I wanted a keyboard with a detachable numpad. I've resolved myself to getting a TKL + numpad now.

The only issue for me really is the shift key as I barely look at my kb while typing, so I just sometimes mistype when trying to capitalize a letter or type any of the symbols that use the shift key.
Other than that, I have my windows set to use the US layout so I can still type normally with only a few spelling mistakes etc, while only minimally reducing my typing speed.

My favourite board at the moment is a QuickFire TK fitted with lubes blues. Damn, I want to take that keyboard everywhere. Its a pitty I am not allowed to use blues in the office. So scummy browns it is.
Tbh I can't stand browns. They feel sort of rusty and inconsistent, like there is dirt stuck in a linear switch. Overall a yuck feeling. In fact, believe it or not, I found that the razer "mecha-membrane" switch feels better than browns.

Hmmm, interesting that you should say that. I had the Logitech G710+ with brown switches and never really got used to them. They were too inconsistent. Then I bought a Corsair k70 with browns for the office, and it was a BIG step up from the g710. Maybe it is just placebo, or the way the caps hit the allu base plate... I dunno, but they feel a lot better. Definitely not as crisp as my blues or blacks though.

A worthwhile sacrifice for the use of a mech keyboard in the office though... The blacks got fatiguing after about 4 hours of constant typing, so not a viable option. My next board will probably have silent reds or clears to give them a go for office use.

This would probably be a good place to ask. Do any of you happen to have a keyswitch tester that I could borrow? I want to possibly order a new keeb, I have never really liked the cherry mx browns in my K70 so I'm looking to get one with blues. I would like to try out all the options.

I'm probably gonna go for Halo Trues. Look like really interesting switches.

Rebeltech has got Ducky in :)
Ducky is an awesome brand as well, and they make phenomenal products! But unfortunately it falls into the more 'common/generic' mech keyboard category. I'm looking for my next keyboard to be something special. Not sure what yet though...

Looks neat, but those keycaps.... Im not sure how comfortably they will be? Opinions looks to be a mixed bag.

I've only ever owned Romer-G keyboards. The G910 Orion spark then downsized to the G410 Atlas Spectrum.
I've typed on many switches and my favourites have to be the Gateron Blues.

It's all theory for now but i've spent many hours on aliexpress building what in my hypothetical opinion is the best keyboard, the recipe goes like this:

PCB: GK64
Case: CNC Aluminium case
Switches: Kailh Box Navy
Keycaps: These side printed ones

Never built a keyboard in my life but as soon as I'm able I'm building this :D

My issue with the GK64 is that you don't get QMK firmware for your keyboard.

I'd much rather go for the HS60 if it ever comes back in stock.

How about the XD64?

I like the Idea of dedicated arrow keys on a 60% board

Just an update for anyone who is interested, the guys who make the Tokyo60 have given me a 'non-committal' but pretty confident confirmation that they will be releasing the tokyo60 [link] Rev.2 soon after the first drop arrives in mid September. I would personally estimate late november/december.
If anyone is interested in maybe getting in on it and splitting shipping, let me know.

I will talk to a mate that would be interested in this. Will let you know as soon as he gets back to me. Will send him links etc tomorrow.

There's no rush, we have like 2 months [emoji28]
