Finally got around to opening up an inverter I bought on the forum a long time ago. Plugged it into the wall, no load, no battery connected, and it's making a really mean sound like coil whine or maybe even a small short.

Can anyone tell me if this is ok or is it going to get up and eat all my bagels?

First click is me turning on the plug. Second click is the inverter's relay, third click is me turning off the plug.

Sounds about right for what it is. Definitely shouldn't sound like that out the box but those inverter 'types' are notorious for cheaping out on internal components (transformer, control circuits etc). It sounds like it's on it's last legs but I'm willing to bet if you hook it up to a battery, it will charge the battery and carry a load and invert when AC disconnects. Give it a go and see. What's the worst that can happen :D
Just don't do a load test with anything you really care about is my only suggestion.
Also - those inverters are horrible so I'm also willing to bet that even if it works right now, at some point it will indeed get up and eat all your bagels.

Oooffff the electrical humm on that is enough to make me wanna throw it away for you !! Chances are It will work for your purpose but its going to give up at some point and it will do so spectacularly (it might even give you a nice surge and fry everything downstream).

Cheap inverters can make quite a bit of noise but that's mostly a monotone buzz.

That sounds quite erratic and dangerous to be honest.

no battery connected
Um, that might be a big no-no.
I would imagine the inverter has a small charging circuit, and basically when there is nowhere for the power to go (caps are fully) it has an emergency shutdown. Then the caps discharge. Then they fill up again and the emergency shutdown happens.

Don't run battery inverters without batteries.

TIL. Thanks.

~ IF ' my score allows it, Ill be keen on taking it.

Requesting clarity on rule :
''No PIFs will be given to people with an Feedback score lower than 3. ' '
Does this refer to my ''Reaction score'' ?in that case I just qualify with 5 points or Does it mean I need 3 positive feedbacks reviews? in that case I dont qualify yet, with 2 points.

That “waste of time” review disqualifies you unfortunately.
