Hello fellow Carbonite members!

I am new to the forum. I was led here by a post I made on /r/AskSouthAfrica - everyone seems to think this forum is the best way to safely buy and sell tech in SA.

In short: I live in Somerset West, a small town/suburb of Cape Town. I'm looking to sell a PC along with monitors and peripherals for a fair price, but I don't want to be limited by having no reputation on this forum. I don't want to get scammed either, so having an experienced seller helping me would be beneficial.

How can I go about finding someone to facilitate the sale of my rig? Is there anything I should look out for when dealing with a middle-man/facilitator besides their reputation on this site?

I would be willing to have my hardware tested and to travel to areas around Somerset West, such as Stellenbosch, if necessary. I would prefer not travelling far, though. Are there standardised benchmarks I should be aware of, such as Memtest86?

I'm looking to use PayPal for payment, as it offers solid buyer/seller protection and feels safer than an EFT. Is that acceptable?

Apologies if this is not the correct thread for my post. I can try moving it elsewhere if necessary.

Thanks,
V.

Hey man, So first thing is to revisit the rules and make sure you are 100% familiar with them.

2. nothing is 100% safe, as a community you are definitely better than Facebook Marketplace but that does not mean we are 100% safe either. It does take some common sense to not get scammed and if it's too good to be true look deeper.

3. Finding an experienced member to help you (Ask for help in Smack Talk) with a deal won't be hard most guys/ladies/attack helicopters are decent people here and will try make time to assist. I would recommend finding someone to help for your first 2-3 deals. Also face to face deals for your first few are recommended.

4. Keep a good record of your stuff working and don't package it like a doos, as shipping the working item to the best of your ability is still your responsibility. There is no standard tests to run but members will probably ask for you to send a few videos of it doing certain actions to verify.

5. I don't know how successful you will be with paypal it is really not common here and I doubt 90% of your buyers will go for it.

1. I'll read the rules a third time for sure.
2. Yeah, I'm sure nothing is safe, but this will definitely be better than Facebook. I've got a decent amount of common sense - I've sold a few games before on Gumtree and some people really wanted to do sketchy shit.
3. I'll check out Smack Talk, thanks for the recommendation! Face to face in a neutral location (or with a safety buddy) is how I'm planning on going about things.
4. I'll take some videos of things working. Planning on selling local rather than shipping since a lot can happen. Would rather deliver in person.
5. Shame about PayPal, would really rather avoid dealing in cash and EFTs are apparently pretty easy to reverse/make bounce, so I'll have to figure out a decent way of handling the payment.

Thanks for the help, AresFaithfull!
