Is there any place that won’t charge a 4 hours labor to change plugs on my Toyota 86 I’d do it myself just not sure how to exactly get there

engine needs to be lifted out of the chassis to access the spark plugs due to the boxer engine design - if I'm not mistaken. It is labour intensive sadly

changed mine took approx 1.5 hours cos I was talking to a pretty lady at the same time.

Minimal tools needed.

Buy spark plugs from Midas. way cheaper than Stteal byu U

If you are in Gauteng, chat to the guys on the 86 of GP group.
You should be on the group if in Gauteng anyway.

Eish been getting some reactions there. I acknowledge it can be done without lifting the engine out, toyota will probably take the maintenance guide suggested approach.

What you might not know, is the service manual from Toyota recommends unbolting the engine and raising it up a couple of inches for clearance.

Erohans tright. Have an 86, and there is a reason a major service is so expensive, the drop the engine out to change the sparkplugs.

Thats the correct mnaufacturwr way to do it, can it be done with some round about, welding a magnet to the end of a socket wrench bullshit...

It's got nothing to do with build quality, it's to do with the nature of the engine, it's a WIDE engine... the engine bay is only so big.

So yeah, if you willing to loose the skin on your knuckles and fuck around with magnets and home brew remedies then yes, you can save the time and money.

yes - it can be done.

Anyone in south africa going to do that? Options are few and far between

I also own one 🥲

big hands and 41 min vs futzing with the engine connectors, fly wheel, coolant, eg

But what ever you are comfortable with.

Is the 86 so badly built that it can't even tolerate 4x 10mm ish holes drilled in low stress areas of the body?

I saw a wrx that was driven head on into a concrete divider (speed was 120 kph). Driver walked away with only facial lacerations.

I would not put any holes in a frame rail. Just me though.

The "frame" rails isn't a low stress area, like I said drill in a low stress area. I believe they lower than the sparkplug anyway.

Hi everyone it seems this thread got a bit of attention,

going to try to swap the plugs this weekend with a magnet and see how it goes

I currently own the GT86 and a BMW 118i

out of the two vehicles the FA20 has been way more reliable than the BMW engine even though changing the plugs seems to be a hassle.

the GT86 is an excellent sports car, slap some Coilovers (running Bilstein adjustable) and go head to the track and you'll have more fun than you would in an A45

for anyone interested in actually owning a GT86 just make sure you go for the manual :)

but that's my 2 cents

Must say seeing the coverage on the new models (21 and 22) has me particularly interested in those finally appearing locally as they seem to have addressed some of the issues with the prior one.

Although not like I'll be getting one soon either way...

haha na im just joking

I actually considered getting one before i got my 370
my main issue with the 86 is that my tall fat ass couldnt fit it in it

UPDATE:

I changed the plugs about two weeks ago,

using a ratchet , extension socket and a magnet.

drove it to work so unfortunately the engine was blistering hot while I was working on it,

landed up taking off both the brackets to free up some space, took me 2 hours, a few cuts on my hand and a few dropped bolts but it's done. :)
