So, as the topic says, which would be a good entry level router to manage the wifi and cabled connections in my house?

I'd like to be able to prioritize certain IP addresses or even MACs to set different bandwidth / speed allocation to each? Regardless of whether wifi or LAN cable.

Suggestions please?

TIA

I use Gargoyle, it is a custom firmware for your router (depending on supported, there is a list) when I had a limited connection this was very useful and easy to get going with.

It will also notify the user when allocation is used up, and user can check usuage when going to routers landing page.

Can set groups of address, assign IP addresses based on mac, dhcp the rest, guest account etc. Basic to navigate and setup is fairly easy.

Many of the medium to higher end TP-link routers are supported. And others.

And it's free. To install (flash) on your router.

Ask away if you need further assistance, maybe I can help?
I currently run an TL-Archer C7, have run wr-1043nd in the past.

Basic management like that... even a decent Asus router can handle that

I'm not 'down' with the Asus routers, but most routers can Qos and even limit bandwidth, but usage cap is almost always a non-existent feature. (Gargoyle has this)

Edit: Not sure if OP is after usage cap, maybe I miss-read the Question, and this is moot.

Wasn't particularly after usage cap, more limiting bandwidth. Now, while it may seem that most decent routers can do this, I currently have one that can't and therefore am trying to find out which one I should get.. :)

Are you using fibre or ADSL.
Think this will determine which router you should get.
Also how much are you wanting to spend?

Using ADSL, for now. Looking at max budget of R1k?

Heard good things about the TPLink routers - my Netgear falls well short on the bandwidth management :(

douglash I thought you'd be the guy answering this question.. Haha, I would say it depends on how dirty you want to get with the set up.

You could buy an entry level TP-link and flash a custom firmware called open-wrt, and have features and fine grained control you usually only get with mikrotik or cisco routers.
Or you could just buy an entry level Mikrotik

But, just to clarify, are you looking for a router with a modem and WiFi?

It's been awhile and don't have the time or inclination to research it.. Haha.

Just looking for DSL modem with 4 port LAN and wifi with bandwidth control.

Need to make sure that certain IPs get better priority and speed.
