Hi hi Guys,

Today i post this as i have no idea how to go further so I am looking for advice.

I am a qualified electrician with a couple years mining experience - since i became sick i couldn't really go back to underground working so i started doing Codification (i.e. Codification (Cataloguing) is a uniform and standardised process for classifying, naming, and describing Items of Supply. It allocates unique 13-digit NATO Stock Numbers to those Items of Supply )
I have been job hunting for more than 1.5 years now and this is proving to be difficult so what can i add to my skill set to make me more desirable?

Kind regards
Lee

I know of quite a few guys making a decent living from doing private electrical jobs in people's homes and businesses......simple stuff like replacing DB switches, connecting stoves, plugs etc

Well if you are registered and equipped to issue COC's then surely you have ample opportunities , especially in Gauteng area , but not limited to. Brace yourself for the renewable energy / generator / inverter support that can and will escalate . Load shedding and off-grid power issues are here to stay , might even get worse as we see it now. I would say get involved with those technologies , its becoming a whole new ecosystem complete with Internet Of Things monitoring / logging / management etc. And there is money in it , I had to spend 30% of my Christmas bonus on inverter / batteries / emergency lights, its even getting worse.

If you not registered yet , well that should be your immediate road map going forward.

just saw this now, so maybe to add -

- hook up with building developers and offer to do electricity for their new buildings
- hook up with property agents (whether sale or rental) to issue CoCs for the properties they are selling, or to fix things in properties they are managing
- advertise independently in your local community to individual homeowners for electrical repairs/alterations etc.
- don't limit yourself to only electrical installations - fixing/installing gate motors, electrical fencing, CCTV systems, IoT (in particular) is a whole new area which should be very interesting/profitable
- same for solar/loadshedding solutions as mentioned above
- offer your services on carb - perhaps something comes up; there are a lot of people who need (electrical and other) things fixed but don't know where to go, or are too busy etc. - start small and don't charge an arm and a leg and get things going

some thoughts that i hope are helpful - good luck,

And get your name out on social media, make up a Facebook/Instagram page for business, put your company details and a description as your WhatsApp profile.

Good idea on that note.

Don't underestimate your local facebook pages. We have tons of requests for recommendations on our neighbourhood FB page.

My 2c worth of advice, for you once you've found your feet.

- give a written quote with clear terms
- don't be shy to insist on a deposit
- State clearly in your quote what is included, and what is NOT included in the job.

In too many industries I've heard of customers reluctant to pay, or they expect the delivering party to do much more than what they're prepared to pay for.

I'm the chairman of the complex where I live. You have no idea how unreliable electricians have been for us. They have been the single biggest issue, over and over.

Register a small business, get a website up and start approaching complexes. If you offer 24/7 callout, it'll make a huge difference. We have to deal everything via e-mail for audit trails and the like.
