Never had to have a HD recovered before. But we have an old HD which has tons of photos on it and my wife is freaking out.

What are your experiences with Data recovery? From what I understand, the odds are 50/50 of getting the data back.

Any company in PTA East you can recommend for this?

In general, chances of recovery start at near 100%, but people often try things they find on Google/recovery software that’s meant to recover from logical damage and the chances start dropping until they approach zero.

Head to Computer Storage Solutions in Midrand - their site is undergoing maintenance at the mo, but call on 011 541 9932.

I've used/referred/worked closely with them for around 15 years.

Tecelo is the goto. I've had a few drives there. 100% recovery each time. You can get a quote online too.

Best of luck with the recovery.

Rule of thumb - a 2nd and 3rd drive is always cheaper then data recovery and less painful then an upset wife :p . Is the drive dead EG not spinning or is it making a ticking noise or is it simply not detected in Windows, but spins smoothly?

Feels like it spins up, but not being detected at all. Going to do a bit more TS before I sent it off to be recovered

Install HDsentinal, then plug the drive in. HDS should be able to give you the drive health.

Depending on drive health, you could then run Ubuntu off of a USB and see if your data shows up. If it does, then copy it to another drive and from that drive, again to another drive, or atleast dump the NB data to Google Drive or something.

As the other members have said, use a proper recovery company.

Do not use a free solution.

If anyone else is reading this:

!!Hard drives have a limited life span!!

They will die. Do not use one drive as your only backup and even then, you should probably use a proper storage solution and not just a drive.

People alway say “I don’t need anything fancy” and then freak out when their data is lost.

A cheap NAS device running RAID 5 is probably cheaper than using a data recovery services company.

As the old saying goes " 2 cheap drives are cheaper then a complaining wife"

I just feel like people who use this forum know better than to let their SO have their entire backup on one drive or even on a phone with zero data backup.

Let's do an exercise.

Close your eyes. Now imagine that your SO loses their phone with no backup of their data.

Photos all lost.

Now open your eyes.

How much fear are you experiencing?

Like you are imaging my life atm.....

They broke into our house, stole our phones, laptops everything.
Luckily we backed all the photos up onto a hard drive...... plug it in.... oh.....

sorry to hear :(

I knew a few people who ran their backup server in the ceiling for that very reason.

They put all the expensive stuff they could there and then ran cabling down.
