What causes this?

Hey all,

Not sure what causes this and would like to know what it was so that I may avoid it in the future.

Card is an Asus RX580 8GB running off an Aerocool VX-750. Motherboard is an ASRock H270 Fatality, 4GB RAM and a 6th gen Celeron.

Card is getting plenty power and is running from its own dedicated cables. Currently undervolted by -48mv, -5% Power and is running at a cool 60deg. Motherboard has also got the molex connector plugged in.

Could this have been due to the card pulling too much from the riser for some reason?

Just curious as to how I could avoid it in the future. The riser actually still works fine believe it or not, just don't want the added fire risk.

is that plugged into a molex or sata at the psu?
crappy converters can also do that, low quality pins and wire that cant handle the current.

That was plugged into a SATA directly to the PSU with no other adapters.

If I'm not mistaken, the riser should be giving very little current to the card, which should be getting the majority from the PCI-E connections, which is a single 8pin.

The card only draws 100W under load which is 50W under what the PCI-E connection can supply so why would it then be drawing that much power to cause that much heat to that single 12V connector?

dont use sata, use molex.
I dont know why it burnt out, but every time ive seen this it was a riser powered from a sata connection via a converter. buy molex powered risers if you want to be safe and power them directly from the molex connectors on your psu.

Thanks, I have a molex version. Strange that it's only happened to one of them though.

Someone accidentally cut some copper strands off the yellow wire while stripping the sheathe off or crimping the plug on. The longer the cable/wire and the thinner it is creates more resistance and therefore more heat. Higher resistance over that part of the wire caused it to burn. Mass produced product as quickly as possible by the lowest bidder is the cause.
 
Likely the riser was drawing too much wattage for the connector.

PCI-E slots can draw up to a maximum of 75W whereas that connector is unofficially rated to 36W.
 
In my humble opinion I think it was a connector (or wire in the connector rather) not making contact properly.
