A good few of you will know me as JVR on the VW Club forum & CarForums - despite my zero iTrader, I have concluded several deals on Carbonite in the past.
It pains me to have to do this, but here goes.
Last week, I sold my 3-year-old MSI Apache laptop to @Comicjester. Link to sale thread
He came to my house to fetch the machine, and was given the opportunity to thoroughly inspect & test the machine before payment, after which we concluded the sale.
On Friday, he contacted me, telling me that the display no longer works, and that he had opened it, to remove the HDD & RAM.
I had initially agreed to have a look at the machine before I would even consider refunding, but contacted him later on, stating that I had given it some thought, and would not be willing to offer a refund, based on the fact that the display stopped functioning and he had worked on the machine himself, and that I had specified no warranty whatsoever in the sale ad + been open forthright about the age and condition of the machine. Besides that, I have precious little time to spend with family and to finalize my affairs, before emigrating to Europe.
He then turned belligerent, claiming that I had swindled him with a known non-working machine, and that he would open a bad deal thread on Carbonite - when I told him to go ahead, he then escalated, threatening going to the police to open a case of theft. I once more responded that he should do as he pleases, as money exchanged for goods does not constitute theft.
He then informed me that he was coming to my house, along with a friend of his, to rough me up and strong-arm me into refunding him... then started the barrage of missed calls and further intimidating messages to try and get a refund. This included calls at 11pm.
So now, I'm going to be the one to open a bad deal thread. I can't be expected to take accountability for a machine that he had physically worked on, but moreover, I take exception to threats of violence against me and mine.
Frankly, given the thuggish behavior and threats, in addition to the circumstances in which the display failed, I feel that I'm entirely within my rights to now block his number, and consider this matter closed. --- I'm not going to sacrifice the precious little time I have left in SA, dealing with this kind of drama.
Mods, kindly weigh in, should you consider my approach to be unreasonable or incorrect?
Thanks in advance.
JVRR.
