Hi Guys

Im looking for a SPDIF toslink to 5.1 rca or a HDMI audio extractor, also 5.1.

Googling brings up the stereo version. But the 5.1 versions are on unfamiliar or on international websites. Anyone used something like this. I'm not too worried if it's not perfect audio quality. I want to connect a modern smart tv to a setup that does not have hdmi or spdif. It's an older model home theater setup that still works perfectly and like to reuse instead of a sound bar. as i already have it.

Recommend anything else than can work for me and is available locally.

I have this one; bought it for 600+- directly from bounce online though, recognised the name and drove there. They're about 5kms from me

My avr detects it as 5.1 when selected.

What input does the old home theatre setup need? Most of the audio extractors convert HDMI to SPDIF digital out, so that you can connect it to the optical/coaxial input on your home theatre receiver. If your receiver doesn't have digital input then you need a DAC that splits the digital (HDMI/SPDIF) audio into 5x analogue channels; I haven't actually ever seen one in the wild.

This claims to have SPDIF input but I don't know if it will do the job: Takealot

Hi guys, thanks for the reply. The amplifier got no digital inputs. It's got 5 rcas in.
Still on the hunt for something.

Yes I got no digital inputs. I need exactly what you described. But only Amazon has something but not sure if it's worth the trouble. Or just stick to stereo speakers for watching movies.

Howzit, I got one of these lying around if I remember correctly - Takealot

Think I only got stereo output from it though, but I could be wrong.

Would have to check when I get home, because I went through a few adapters at one stage since I was in the same boat with my old receiver.

It might be worth getting a cheap used receiver with digital inputs. You can get them for as little as R 2k if you keep an eye out for deals. Check avforums.co.za as well.

This looks like an option.

Note that I have NO experience with either this product or store.

If you are going to drop ~R1000 on something like this, won't it make sense to rather save up a bit more/sell your current receiver and get something like this instead?
(I don't know the seller or unit being sold; it's just an example)

Reliable Store is a drop shipping site. Their Hellopeter page is... Fun :ROFLMAO:

So you may as well use Amazon.

I agree a new receiver is probably the way to go.

I actually sold my Denon receiver. Lol. Just wanted to connect something I already have. If I spend like R600 thought it would be worth the trouble. There's a stereo convertor for like R200. Might hook that up with a set of bookshelf's. Anything better than tv sound right 😁

Yeah I had a stereo setup with an integrated amp and bookshelves for ages. I loved it, I wasn't even going to upgrade to 5.1 but a deal came along on a receiver that I couldn't pass up. So going stereo is a solid option.
