Ok people. My neighbor has a router PLANET 802.11g Wireless ADSL 2/2+ Firewall Router, ADW-4302 which is connected to an adsl line. When I moved into my new place I picked up his wifi signal with about 3 bars. So I asked him if he would be willing to split his internet with me, cause I have 3g, my signal sucks where I stay and I am not interested in signing a contract with Telkom.

Being the nice guy he is, he said I can use it for free, cause its just some moderate browsing. Now I get signal in only certain parts of my house. So I would like to boost this routers wifi signal.

I still have a mecer router laying around:

E5104N2 Mecer 802.11b/g/n Wireless ADSL2+ Router W/4 Port Switching Hub
*IEEE 802.11b/g/n Standard for 2.4GHz Wireless LAN *Wireless Connection up to 150Mbps *ICASA approved (TA-2009/1779)

and was wondering if I can use this in any way?

My requirements are as follows:

- I would like to boost the wifi signal in my house
- I would also like to be able to plug in a physical RJ45 cable into the device that I use to boost the signal, but this a secondary requirement

I think u might need a wireless extender. Stand to be corrected though.

I hate to throw a spanner in the works but you may want to check on the legality of such an arrangement; some ISPs don't allow sharing across property lines...

Its not the ISP's that don't, its icasa actually but TBH everyone does it and yes it might not be legal, you not using it to make money or provide a wireless service that you make money off or are using it to hack.

So but get a wireless repeater and that shoule be awesome then!

Wish you the best of luck.

As long as no one is making money off it then it is fine from my knowledge :)

Thanx for the the concern and making me aware of the possible legal implications. I stay on one massive plot with two separate houses which, to the naked eye, looks like one property. I hooked up my Mecer router and found that it does not have settings for repeating so that one's over. I'm fixing to get me one of these: D-Link DWL-2100AP Review - Wireless Access Points - CNET Reviews

A friend of mine is using one and he's very happy with the performance and ease of use. Alternatively I would like it if someone has something similar for sale? I like supporting Carbonite folks :D

Anyone maybe still have a comment on this? I can get my hands on the following router/AP as well: DAP-1155

Ok, here is my opinion.

Stop messing around and do it the proper way.

Does his modem's antenna screw on/off ? Then go get a high DBi Antenna, screw it in - bingo.
Other than that, you can try WDS or having an AP in repeater mode but that would significantly decrease the usable "hotspot" - hence WDS's existence.
For that to work bestest estest - get 2 (two) APs - connect one with ethernet to the modem - WDS to the other one.
If all else fails - you can pay me to go there and waffle. I waffle good.

LOL ok kewl then man. Thanx for the solid input. I will go with the high DBi Antenna then, seeing that his routers antenna can unscrew.
