Morning everyone,

I have an 1070ti that I am wanting to try a repair - it has some quite rust around the headers & connectors.

EvapoRust seems to be the go to - it recommends submerging though. Has anyone tried this and have thoughts? I was thinking of wiping it but this does not seem intuitive to the process.

Afterwards, I have some replacement headers - the single HDMI and the three DP are mainly affected (nothing on the DVI however). From what I hear, this is not your classic at home solder job - can anyone recommend a good & reliable electronics shop that can do this while I wait (for a reasonable fee too)?

Most cell phone repair shops will be able to replace headers and connectors. On the pcb fairly easily. A lot easily than working with smd components. Liquid cleaners aren’t bad, you just need to make sure that all residues are removed and the board properly dried before powering it again.

My thinking with a phone shop - just want it to be done properly (given that nature of it).

What are SMD components?

It is fine to submerge it but then I must leave it to thoroughly air dry?

Surface mount devices. Like most ICs on pc boards these days. My point was that if phone repair shops can replace tiny components on phone boards and laptops, it will be easy for them to replace the connectors.

Depending on how much of corrosion is present, it may be better to replace than to submerge as then you are less like to have bad joints as the solder will be replaced in the process. There’s also less chance of anything else getting damaged in the process as the repair is localized to the 1 section of the card.

Ah, thanks for the clarity.

Below is some pics.

I could do specific de-rusting but don't want to miss anything.

Next question - recommendations for a repair shop in the greater Randburg area.

Have you sourced replacement connectors already?

Did that rust happen up here in jhb?

Not sure of a repair shop though. I tend to do most of my repairs by myself. 😀

I did through RS components.

I queried it with the previous owner - was from a stint in CPU.

I would have liked to have done the same but the soldering seems to be quite finicky.

the mounting plate you can simply sand down with very fine grit paper bud and recoat with a primer and black or silver spray can, even orange if you feel like it lol...the connectors i am trying to see if its just the outside that has some localized rust on or if its inside, if its just the outside then you can tape up so that nothing gets in, sand down same as mounting plate and coat the outside....inside will be a diff issue most likely cause of the grounding

Will keep the re-coating in mind after the EvapoRust - I think the connectors are the use and that is why I got the replacements.

cool bud, then try a cell repair shop if you get the connectors....or someone on carb that fixes boards on daily basis, maybe he would charge less to solder. i remember seeing a few guys buying 2nd hand items and fixing them ten selling...cant recall name at the moment, unless the ban hammer hit them due to shitty service
