Alright, so I've been an avid buyer of Samsung phones, and am quite loyal to the brand. You can imagine my dismay when a simple drop from about 10cm high on Wednesday absolutely shattered my phone. It's still usable, but there are spider web cracks all over.
So I think it's not a big deal, as I have one free screen replacement. I was unable to go to my local screen repair shop, as I was indisposed until today. I contact them today and find out that I'm 3 days out of my year free screen replacement window. Just three days, because I simply didn't report it immediately, and it cracked from something so small (my first time dropping a phone ever).

Now you'd think there would be some leeway/sympathy based on the fact that I've spent so much money on Samsung in the past, have never claimed for a return or anything, and was only 3 days too late to report the problem. I was basically told to go jump. Now I'm peeved as hell by this, but a part of me understands that fine, I guess even though they're d*cks about it, I am out the window. So I ask for a quote for a screen repair... To be hit with a quote for R5000! This is utter madness!

Not only does Samsung not give a damn about looking after it's loyal customers, but they're asking retardedly high prices for repairs on phones they make that are clearly so badly designed that they can't handle a tiny fall. The fact that they even offer the 1-year free screen replacement is a testament to this fact.

Anyway, needless to say I'm unhappy. And I will no longer be supporting a company like this that can't be arsed to take care of its customers. Congrats Samsung, you lost another one.

I have dropped my s7 edge and s8 plus quite a few times from astonishing heights. Kept my phone with screws in the pocket. And its a tank... much more so than other brands. Rather than bashing samsung, rather be greatful that they offer the free screen replacement in the first place... not alot of the other manufacturers have that. Your phone most likely had a small chip on it and it landed on said chip now that caused it to shatter.

If its the edge its not surprising. I saw an article a while back that replacement screens are stupid expensive. Always get a glass screen protector can save you a fortune or insure it.

I think it's insured.. hopefully. But I just had to claim because some fool drove into the back of my car. So I'm not too keen on claiming again right now. -sigh- it's been a rough few weeks.

Whilst I completely understand the saltiness (sort of. Pristine phone keeper right here XD), I am interested to know what ship you are going to be jumping to? Honestly?

Yep, I'm salty indeed. You get people that just throw their phones around and drop them etc and are fine, then you get people like me with covers, cleaning them every day, not bumping it, not with keys in pockets etc and this kak happens at the first tiniest drop (must have landed on a stone or something)... So yeah. Saltier than the tears of my enemies.

I'm probably going to hang on to the broken phone for now, and jump to a Google pixel 2 when it comes out (if I can get my hands on one..) and yes, maybe the "service" was a luxury that other phones don't have, but other phones don't cost R5k to get a screen fixed. Not to my knowledge anyway.

I think you'll be surprised regarding the screen replacement ey. Can be a bitch.

I understand your frustration. I have also had my fair share of being treated like an outcast by certain companies when they find a loophole in their warranty clause which gives them reason to tell you to go away. As a result there are a few very good brands out there that I am reluctant to buy from because of their attitude when dealing with warranty. The sad part is that I hear of other people having better success getting the same companies to honour warranties. I guess it all boils down to who you get to speak to and how persistent you are. Having the CPA on your side also helps a lot. Its a pity that companies don't always recognise the importance of keeping customers satisfied, although nowadays there are always unsatisfied customers. I've had my fair share of those as well, people who are never happy and always impatient. Companies are playing the numbers game, it all boils down to how many customers they can keep vs how many they lose. They also have to try and deal with inferior stock that gets imported and the losses incurred from returns. The losses from returned items have increased significantly over the past few years as products have become more "cost effiecient" to manufacture and the quality of the product has suffered. Be encouraged that you are not alone in this as a consumer, and that we all at some stage, end up getting shafted by some arrogant employee who is also frustrated by the constrains of his or her job. This is just the sad reality of the greedy world of capitalism that we live in. Be strong, Move on, What goes around comes around, they will get their turn. I have seen this happen many times...

I don't use a screen protector on my S6 and had no issue, the Gorilla Glass is really strong. Screen protectors are a money making thing I think.

How can someone complain that their device broke when dropped? Or that it is expensive? Why not compare it to Apple and see what their cost is, or another vendor to see MARKET related prices. It is like complaining that BMW factory parts and labour are expensive from a BMW garage, no shit. But then again Merc, BMW, Hyundai etc are all expensive - it is generally just the consumer who thinks it is bad value for money but didn't bother to compare it.

I have a Thule cover though so even if I do drop my phone it is still fine.

Firstly, phone screens are made of glass, and they can break at shockingly small heights because.....physics. Secondly, if you were out of warranty, you were out. What are they meant to do, just extend it by 3 days for you because of all that 'loyalty' bonus you've been storing up? What a joke. Thirdly, yes phone screens cost a fortune, it's the most expensive component of the phone and that's why your phone actually costs R12k+ new. I know, shocker right?

Yeah they're finicky with the free screen replacements, that's completely understandable. I was also knocked with something like this from Samsung in the past, but it's their policy. You broke your phone, not them, and you were out of warranty. That's just plain shit-bad luck, period.

Yeah for sure, I know it's bad luck. I'm not saying that they are wrong for not giving me a free screen repair, it's just frustration.
The fact that it was dropped during the repair window, and I was only out of it by about 3 days because I couldn't take it in immediately is just so annoying. And this is the type of thing that a company could so easily have "understanding" towards to keep customers happy. I'm not demanding anything from Samsung not taking action against them, because I clearly don't have a case, but it's just crazy how a situation like this, after a small nothing-drop is now costing me 5k. It's possible that the negetive guys have never experienced this frustration. It's just a crappy situation.

And that is why Greekking and myself bought live demo units to use as spares.

The cost (my wife was not impressed) of the live demo is less then a third of that price and is original but has issues like burn in plus all the spares like a battery is covered in it.

I have a S7e demo if you want fir screen replacement ?

I have dropped my s7e in and out of cover from over a meter and never had problems (except once where the screen hit the edge of a table killing a small clump of pixels but I can live with it)

PM me if you want to buy screen for replacement, vodacom is R5600 to repair pakis are R3200 nd my phone costs R2700 :) you do the math

Firstly, phone screens are made of glass, and they can break at shockingly small heights because.....physics.

I've watched a lot of a drop tests for various phones and it always amazes me how one drop will actually completely shatter the phone and then another after seemingly the same drop, from even higher which would suggest even worse damage, will have the phone laugh it off better than a Nokia 3310 with not even a scratch in sight. Phone physics are crazy.

I don't know why, but I have not owned a single phone that I have not dropped before. But I must add, not one of them ever broke. For yours to crack a screen at just 10 cm is strange that it could break. I am not saying its not the truth, just thinking that 10cm is not a lot of distance.
Rules are rules, whether you are 1 day or 1 year late. The person you phoned was just doing their job according to pre-scripts.
If your car was insured for 10 years and you cancel your insurance but your car gets stolen just the next day, do you think your insurance company will foot the bill?

I also believe screen protectors are just a money making scheme. If they were necessary then they would have been original equipment. I had one fitted to my J5. It looked so impressive seeing how its done and it seemed worthwhile. But now mine is starting to peel, one day I will have to remove it. I was told it sticks forever.

Sorry about your loss. Are you sure it was only 10cm:angel:

My screen on my Galaxy S5 went faulty about a month before 2 years of use. Emailed adh and spoke to someone, was told I could claim a free repair. Unfortunately the closest repair place was far from us and I couldn't just drive there in the same month to have it fixed (Samsung inconveniencing me as the buyer here).
Mom took the phone in at the time as I couldn't go up with her. She was told in the store they won't replace the screen because it covers from Date of Purchase. So phoned them and told them I purchased the phone and registered it for ADH later than the form states and could get Vodacom to verify this. They still wouldn't help me.

I still thought about Photoshopping the proof of purchase so I could get a free screen replacement but never did it in the end.

It wasn't my fault the OLED display is biodegradeable and doesn't last longer than 2 years. Samsung should use better technology. So was very pissed off. I like the new Samsung phones but not as keen on their mobile side like I used to be when I first got my Galaxy S5.

I will still support Samsung for other products and still like their devices but the service I was given was shit. To be told it would be covered, waste petrol and then it won't be covered.

Yeah for sure. I've had great service from them with one of my TVs (although it was on them that I got 2 faulty units in a row), but no complaints there. It's just the phone department that's garbage. I also have a bad taste in my mouth because of how they were over the phone... Both my local place and the repair centre. They were all friendly until they saw it's out by 3 days and suddenly no matter what I said, they were pretty rude about it. As if the true colours were showing now that they aren't beholden to me for anything. Ah well, no use shooting a dead horse now.

I just need to make the call to claim from insurance or not.. I really dont want to though, as it will push up my premium.. and a paki job will void any other warrenty I have left (not to mention it might ruin the water proofing).. but I'm not sure if I can deal with this for 8 more months. Looks like Spiderman blew a load on my screen.

I'm glad i switched to apple :3 nothing against android though...
Till the charger connector breaks off in the iphone and their solution is buy a new iphone :)

doesnt matter the distance of the fall of the phone, it matters how it lands. samsung doesnt offer free screen replacements on their new phones anymore, it stopped at the s7 edge.. however huawei phones do offer free screen replacement. build quality also better on the huawei.. switch to huawei, you'll be much happier.. and i dont work for them no...

lol if this legit happened to someone ill be shocked :D please tell me this is a joke?

Something similar happened to my dad, dont remember the exact issue but they couldnt sort it out while we wasted an hour waiting for them, went downstairs(cresta mall) the pakistanis had the phone fixed in an hour

Do I look like i'm joking

I kid you not ;)

Boss' wife wasn't willing to listen to their suggestion,so after a few hours of research I applied liquid cement to a paperclip, stuck it to the bottom of the connector in the port where the charger broke off,and an hour later yanked out the broken bit :)

I'm considering this, to be honest. Huawei's replacement stuff similar to how Samsung's ADH worked?
