Hi Everyone

Looking for a puppy for my kids, my complex is pet friendly and allows dogs at full grown height to be around knee height so breeds I'm looking for would be

Jack Russel
Pekingese
Pomeranian
etc

I work from home so puppy will be well looked after!

Please let me know if anyone knows of or has any puppies for sale/for adoption.

Maltese poodle can do too. Just make sure they know who's boss from day 1.

Yeah, i have an ok size back yard so shouldnt be too much of an issue with a russel.

@cdmnuy - Hamster would work great but my little one (1 year old) would probably hug it to death haha!

Really only looking for a small ish dog cause my daughter is turning 4 and thats what she wants for a birthday present, ive been to the SPCA's around in JHB and they only have big dog breeds so no go for me

Also been checking facebook and gumtree but bit sceptical to buy from there.

We had a yorksire terrier .... loved that dog but never again.

For inside dog / small flat I would highly recommend a long haired dachshund. They are chilled and don't require much exorcise (unlike our border collie) and are not dominant at all.
Great with kids and loyal to a fault.

Have had several (one sleeping on my foot as I type this) and would get more if time/space allowed for it.

+1 for dachshund,

I have a miniature dachshund, love her to bits.

There temperament is lovely. very affectionate, playful and can be stubborn but that part of their charm

they sleep a lot during the day so you can work in peace if they in the house.

Please don't let your innocent little child constantly handle the puppy. It's a horrible experience for the dog. It literally hurts them.
100%

Every dog needs a safe space - with us the kids (and visitors) know to leave them them alone when they are in their baskets. If they want interaction let them come to you.

Have 2 Jack Russells and I can honestly tell you, if you have a 1 year old and a 4 year old and a small-ish yard - DO NOT get a Jack Russell. They need attention and tons of space. If you don't de-energize them effectively and you're juggling a toddler and an infant, something will eventually give.

In fact, were I in your position, I'd actually consider not getting a high upkeep animal at all. A toddler and an infant need constant care and attention and a high upkeep animal just takes away better served time with the offspring. Reconsider a short life animal like a hamster I reckon :D

Just my thoughts though.

Make sure your daughter doesn't hug any dog you get.
Makes me cringe when I see pics of babies lying next to the head of some big bear dog.

My niece had half her cheek ripped off by their placid dog of 8 years while trying to hug her.
Had to have plastic surgery, Nerve damage so the one side of her face was paralysed.

Thankfully she was quite young and the surgeon did a great job. Nerves repaired and you wouldn't know now 8 years later.

Also - I feel compelled to say this. Don't go to the shelters or SPCA or street corner or friends of a friend or whatever and grab an animal. They come with baggage and you don't want an animal you have no background history on around children as young as you have. Shit goes wrong and they go wrong real fast. Even those little dogs have the potential to cause some serious lifelong damage to a child physically.

For context : I don't trust my dogs around my 3 year old. They are never alone together. My male Jack Russell bit me clean open once when the female was on heat and I was trying to get between them. My 3 year old is much lower in height than me and if he bit my kid on or near his face the way he bit me, my dog would be dead by mine own hand and my kid would need plastic surgery. Animals have bad days too. And Jack Rusells can be notoriously temperamental. I guess that applies to most dogs I reckon.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but please do the following for the animal:

Take him for walks, socialising in the beginning is REALLY important. You will have a dog that can go offleash no problem. It's the best feeling ever litting your dog off leash knowing he will be fine wherever he goes.

WASH the water bowl OFTEN. Filling it up isn't enough. Wash the damn thing every week.

Feed it good food. I know this can dig into the overall monthly expense, but feed it the best food you can get on your budget. This kak they sell at Checkers / Spar is junk. Reaearch online what is best.

Get a decent medical aid. Again, hopefully your budget allows. Simple things like teeth cleaning can be expensive but has to be done.

Hope you get a little fella and enjoy him/her. They really are so lekka to have at home when working.

Now that everyone has given you the doom and gloom...

Try The Cat Shack in Edenvale. They frequently have puppies available and I see they posted pics of some newbies earlier in the week.

They're open Saturdays so you can go and check em out.

While you're there take a look at the kitty cats running around there.

So, now that I've given you a direct answer to your question I feel at liberty to preach a wee bit.

Like the others have said, a young pup/kitten requires a lot of work.

We've got three kids and a parrot in the house so speaking from a bit of personal experience here; but with a 1 and 4 year old I'd probably opt for a plastic goldfish. Everyone loves the idea of getting a pet - but it's no ones pet when it comes to cleaning up after them when they mess. And they will.

An older cat might be a better idea. They're not as needy in terms of attention and generally aren't as full of energy as a new kitten.
Also consider that your furniture and general organization in the house is going to go to sheet!! In the words of N'Sync "This I promise you".

We fooled ourselves into believing our teeny tiny little kitty doesn't need outside time. Turns out we were wrong.

Anticipate what your neighbours' worst case reaction would be if the pet escaped into their yard and work on that.

Honestly, I'd say daily if you are using a bowl for water and food cause it is easy to get into the habit of doing so.

When I had my staffie (she passed away in 2021) I had 2 sets of bowls and would always put her food in the clean bowl and then collect the used bowl (she was a very slow eater) when giving the food and go wash it.

(She used a small bucket for water cause she liked the height and I just tossed it out daily as well to water the garden plants)

We had a fox terrier. Lived to 21. Was mental and that was living out of town with huge space. 😖

Wow guys, real honest comments there!

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback, honestly!

This is obviously the first time my immediate family would be owning a pet, as a kid i owned 2 German shepherds and wow they where a breeze but when they died (poisoned) my dad decided to not go through the agony again.

Alot of points made in this post that i did not consider, we as kids where always lucky to not be bit by any dogs but i failed to realise how important it is for the dog/cat to also have freedom and their own space, knowing my kid, she will be all over the dog!

Again, thanks for this, i think i might have to reconsider the pet until the kiddos are older and can understand.

Cheers!
