Hi Everyone!

So i need some help because i think im going to loose my mind my here, and im sure @JollyJamma is too with all the help he has given me.

Summary of problem:
While playing a game, my screen goes completely black and i can no longer see anything, although i can still hear the game and my discord works.
The only way i can fix this is to hard reboot my pc.
The games i have most consistently been able to replicate these problems in are:
Apex Legends - Opening an Apex pack will almost always cause the crash described above.
Dead by Daylight - Upon joining a game, screen immediately goes black.

Its to be noted as well that both of those games are on two different Hard drives

This does happen in other games but besides those above i cannot consistently replicate the problem, not even close to replicate it. When this occurs its completely at random, can happen while i'm in chaotic scenes and really stressing the GPU and other times, while i'm sitting in a random pause menu and walk away from my PC.

What i have tried:
- Roll back drivers
- Latest Drivers
- DDU and install both old and new drivers
- HD Sentinel reports all my harddrives are fine
- Furmark for GPU stress test, no problems and completes the test
- Furmark for CPU stress test 45min - max temp is 69 degrees
- Disconnected my harddrives (besides the C:/ drive) and then connected them one by one to replicate the error

Upon the last one, the issue has not occurred again but i am not convinced this has solved my problems and it will creep its shitty head back in.

The closest thing i have been able to find in the event viewer is the following error:
Error 4101, Display Driver amdkmdap stopped responding and successfully recovered. (usually occurs around the time my problem arises) No other specific events are found at the time besides the windows error alerting about the unscheduled reboot

Specs:
Ryzen 5 2600X - 4.0Ghz
Gskill RipJaws 3200Mhz
B450 Aorus Elite
MSI RX580 Armor 2
750watt 80+ Bronze rated PSU (cant recall the exact name)
2x SSDs (256Gb OS - Transcend Drive, and 500Gb Steam Drive Patriot Burst)
2Tb Storage Mechanical Drive (pretty old)
3Tb Storage Mechanical drive ( 3 years old roughly)
All drives reporting 100% health on HD Sentinel

I am loosing my mind and I am at my wits edge and am about ready to throw this thing out the window!
Please help!

Thanks!

Yes, screen goes black but I can hear the sound in background still going on, only happens in one of my games. Only way to temporarily fix is restarting my pc everytime.
Yea sounds exactly like the same issue!

Whats the specs you got and what all have you tried?

This happened to me on a few occasions as well. Probably something to do with the AMD drivers? For me, it usually only happens while playing Dying Light and then just a few days ago while on the desktop as well. In-game, the screen randomly goes black and my GPU fans ramp up. Never happen once with my 1070ti.

As Some_Guy21 said, only way I could get around it was by resetting the PC every time it happens.

Yea, I am having the exact same problem!

sounds like the gpu is going but you can also try using a other cable on the screen have found twice that the cable gets hot with a loose connection but most prob its the gpu that is failing

I agree with this. I had a rx480 and it did the same. Borrowed my friends rx580 and problem went away. Maybe try another graphics card if you can. Cause I reinstalled and installed all them drivers till I turned blue.

This is 100% a gpu/driver thing, my wifes rx580(NITRO+) also did this, drove me cray cray, but just a simple turning the screen off and back on would sort it untill the next game was launched.

I also did a month end shopping list of stuff and what in the end solved this for me was I switched between the two bioses on the card (armor doesn't have this unfortunately) and ddu and only installed the driver through device manager no software. hasn't done it in a few months now.

Hope you get it sorted.

This is driving me nuts, atleast if it was consistent i could Troubleshoot it more but i cannot replicate the problem consistently and its really driving me up the wall.
I dont like that its pointing towards my GPU though, was really hoping to hold out for the new GPUs in the coming months

had a friend who almost bought a new gpu and psu because of this, until he changed a hdmi / display cable and all has been good since then, try it and see if helps

Faulty ram or ram that's is not 100% compatible at it's rated speed on the M/B can give random problems like this.
Worth checking that out as well.

Had a somewhat similar issue.....when i gamed and got flashed eg in cs go as soon as the scrren went all white....boot PC restart. It wa slike clockwork...Just saying as you say when you open box in apex it happens....also alot of bright lights going off when you do it....My problem was solved when i bought a proper PSU

I'm actually experiencing something very similar. I've been using an LG ultra-wide 1080p for a few years without issue. I bought the aoc 1440p 144hz one this past week.

Started getting black screens on the gsync pendulum demo. Intermittent black screens. Mine comes back within a few seconds.

I tried ddu and new drivers etc but nothing. I googled it and it's most probably the length of my dp cable. My pc is 3m away from the monitor.

I tried Gears Tactics and it's unplayable at 1440p. I dropped the res to 1080p and it works 100%. So it does seem like my cable.

Maybe try dropping the resolution and see if it works for you?

I did find a booster on Amazon for just under R400 excl delivery which I ordered. If the res is your issue I'll let you know how the booster goes.

I'm running a 8086k oc to 5.2 with 16gb ram and 1080ti.

I am already running a 1080p screen... Dropping anymore sounds really unfeasable, and like I'm in for a shit time?

Well not a permanent solution. I meant to figure the problem out. If it is and if the booster works for me you could try the same? Or if distance is not an issue for you maybe try a few different cables?

Thanks for all the help and suggestions so far!

Tested this, it didn't work :/. Distance also isn't an issue as my PC sits right next to my screen on the same desk.

Will be buying a new PSU just after payday, just trying to decide if I am going to go 750W or 650W. As i dont know someone who has one that i can use for a while.

Tried Memtest64 for 3 hours, no errors picked up.
Also double checked the QVL now and my memory is supported at the speed and timings.

Got a mate dropping off some Display port cables, hoping to test it properly and really hope this may be my issue as this has been driving me crazy!

Its not your cable.

Freesync/Gsync is broken on some displays.

if the fps / hz drops below 48 some screens go blank from this

Would this possibly be a cause for me?

I have an RX 580 on an Alienware AW2518H? I know for a fact in certain games my FPS drops below 48?

Most likely, Disable freesync until you get a more powerful gpu

Vertical scan range 30 Hz to 240 Hz (automatic) <- according to the manual

But i dont see the Freesync / Gsync range mentioned so far. so i assume the range is 30-240 hz

The screen I have is a Gsync screen. So i dont make use of those features.

So you were mostly right. Gsync is effed. Framerate didn't stop below 75 in the gears tactics benchmark but flicker for days. Switched it off and boom. Worked first time.
