Openserve Horrible FUP speeds

Isn't this a WebAfrica issue? Why drag OpenServe into it?

It is WebAfrica (via Openserve) and not Openserve (via WebAfrica) ...
I work for an ISP and this is a Openserve policy not WebAfrica :) We also have crazy FUP's on their lines because their pure uncapped is just ridiculous pricing not market related at all.

I feel like this post is derailing, this isn't meant as a shitpost towards OpenServe nor towards WebAfrica or any other ISP/Fibre Provider. It was simply meant to get second opinions from you guys regarding the extreme throttling.

WebAfrica does offer a Pro package on OpenServe that does not have any FUP applied but it costs R1.3K more than what I currently have, R1.5K more than what I'm getting installed.

WebAfrica also offers packages on other networks which are less expensive, faster and no FUPs (and I am switching to one of them for everyone wondering)

None of their other networks have FUPs applied, it's ONLY Openserve, and calls to WebAfrica either results in the agent not being able to help me or telling me that OpenServe is the reason for such a low speed during throttling. Maybe its the mutual agreement between WebAfrica and OpenServe who is to blame, and not either of the companies individually.

Personally I feel it's an OpenServe thing, but it's just an opinion.

They do have a fallback clause in their T&C though:
"Fair Access
To help ensure that all Customers have fair and equal use of the Services and to protect the integrity of the Cool Ideas Infrastructure, Cool Ideas reserves the right, and will take necessary steps, to prevent improper or excessive usage of the Cool Ideas Infrastructure. These steps include, but are not limited to:
limiting throughput;"

This goes for their service on all line providers though, not just OpenServe.
I went to go check now and when I was searching for an ISP, they all stated no FUP....now that does not come up anymore...it seems that they do have an AUP now....still don't know what it entails though...will have to investigate further. Vox for one still state no FUP. Seems they have underestimated the need for downloading/streaming of South Africans... ;)

There is a "Fair Usage Policy" button on their Fibre To The Home page?

This is what I refer to....
"200/20 Mbps BASIC Uncapped Fibre Bundle

BASIC Bundle Includes:

• 200/20 Mbps Symmetric Fibre link,
• Uncapped, Unshaped Bandwidth - No Fair Use Policy
• Free to use Wifi router
Free Line installation (R1725) and activation (R1008)*

WHY VOX TELECOM?"

This is on Vuma's portal.

Whichever way @WiZard it seems there are changes taking place from when fibre started becoming main stream...we will have to watch this space!

VOX will throttle you around 1.4TB on openserves network.

Makes sense, the product sheet does say: "Uncapped is also not limited to a fair usage policy on select FTTH networks."

PS: I am one of those stuck with OpenServe...

This is true however, we live in a day and age where we need things immediately, so why be limited by leaving downloads or updates overnight? Especially if other service providers offers full speed...anytime without limitations!

It's the age of Fibre too - full speeds and contention is a non factor now (unless the ISP throttles of course which really shouldn't be happening by ANY ISP if you ask me)

I am not with vox but have been told by 2 people they get throttled once they hit 1.4TB. Both openserve.

Their spec sheet mentions on "select FTTH networks". So not all networks.

Quick post

I just want some second opinions to make myself feel better about this, but does anyone else think it's horrible for Openserve (via WebAfrica) to throttle a 200Mbps Uncapped Premium line down to 1Mbps.

I mean, sure, it's fine to throttle us, we broke the rules and used 29GB more than what we should, but come on, 1Mbps?! Atleast give me the bandwidth to still open a webpage without having to wait minutes for it to load.

What do you guys think?
That is garbage, but I'm not surprised.

The FUP should be there to free up bandwidth for other users where you are downloading continuously on the network but not to the point where you cannot even use the service you are paying for.

If it shaped to 10mbps or 20mbps from 200mbps that would make more sense as you can still use it.

Also, does shaping also apply to upload speed???

WA fup
It is a bit harsh, but the thresholds are pretty clear. And according to the site you would have gotten ample notifications that you are approaching your limits and need to slow down.
If they only cap you to 10mb? or 5mb? what will stop you from just carrying on downloading more and more at that rate? It's meant as a deterrent. And I'm sure you wont do it again? :p
Yes but now they've freed up 190mbps for someone else to use while you still continue to use only 1/10 of what you are paying for. It's still a win/win for both parties then instead of a FU by the service provider.

This is exactly the point I am trying to make, It's utter garbage that I get completely F'ed even though I'm paying R1600 each month. I mean sure, throttle me, I broke their rules, but not to the point where I would rather choose to have no internet at all. Both my upload and download gets shaped to less than 1Mbps.

Openserve will be the provider in our area and We Africa FUP for Uncapped 10/5mbps is 100GB, how am I supposed to last a month on that with those speeds.

At least Rain LTE FUP for uncapped is 350GB which is more reasonable.

This country is a utter screw up

Why not switch to 100mb on a higher uncapped "tier" ?

I get that, but you are not only paying for line speed. He agreed to 200mb/s, @ 750GB limit. So he used more than what he paid for actually. Should the ISP absorb this cost for every user that goes over? ( I am wildly speculating here. No clue how the pricing structures work between isp and provider)

The problem here is the vague fup (which has been the case for years even on adsl) and that it was agreed upon.

If Burgerking ran a deal on eat as much as you can (but limited to 50 burgers)
Should they allow you to continue eating nr 51 and 52... but you may only eat them very slowly :ROFLMAO:

tldr: Try another ISP with a hopefully more relaxed fup. Or wait patiently for another provider to lay pipe.

Yeah, I also understand that they put them in place to prevent 1 user from hogging all available bandwidth on a network to download 1TB worth of content.
750GB is a lot to download.

BUT it shouldn't be called uncapped if once you hit the 750GB you essentially cannot use the internet because that is misleading advertisement. So ideally it should be reduced to a 10mbps line at the minimum so it's useable but frees up a kak load of bandwidth for other users who aren't using Soo much data.

Also, I see Cool Ideas using Openserve offer unshaped internet.

Our area we can get 10/5 for R500 uncapped and unshaped. That's a way better deal, but they don't seem to mention anywhere whether there is a fair usage policy.

I considered that at first while OpenServe was the only provider in the area, but it was still a hefty increase on the cost with R500 more and 100Mbps less. It felt like a horrible solution as 200Mbps is ideally what I was looking for. I waited for Frogfoot to go live which happened last week and I arrange for my line to be installed to them end of this week and hopefully it will be much smoother with less hassle.

At the time when we were initially searching for Fibre ISPs, there were little to no options available for FTTH, only Business since I live on a block marked for business and those packages were insanely priced and out of range, even lower speed options.

I'm still waiting to hit my meagre 10meg speed at all so consider yourself lucky you at least had full speed for a while.

Am I the only one here that thinks its F*#king laughable that all these uncapped packages have a "usage cap". I mean call a spade a spade ffs!

It is getting harder and harder to sign up for capped accounts, guess the ISPs got sick and tired of realizing they had to give you what you pay for when its stipulated on the bill...

This is Vumatel fibre not Openserve
Correct, that is what I stated...Vumatel. I checked there because I wanted to make sure if the FUP/AUP was still there as was not the case with Cool ideas. They always stated specifically No FUP but now it is gone....That is what I also said....seems the fibre providers misjudged the South African ability to eat data ;)

Shoulda gone with Coolideas - No FUP, No major drama. You get what you pay for ^^

R1500pm, no FUP , No limit averaging about 2.5 - 3.5TB per month

You know, that FUP policy is better than what OP stated....he gets throttled down to 1Mbps on a 200 Mbps connection.
As with the argument with ADSL FUP back in the day....what happens with the unused bandwidth? Companies who bought 1000GIG data caps but did not even use 200 etc etc....so....essentially what they "lose" on the one side, they will make up on the flip side....

I agree with Cool Ideas but hind sight is the best sight right....
Anyway...seems Cool Ideas now also have an FUP. 🙈

its true, at VOX i saw a user with an average of 25TB a month usage, which was pretty impressive
