Hey there guys

ok so I have googled and googled and tried everything to sort the issue on my laptop.. and in the end never got it sorted so I just stopped watching any movies on it..

the Problem:

- The laptop just TURNS OFF (Black screen, all lights off) and then on again (reboot).. and this ONLY HAPPENS when I try to watch a video clip or movie. It doesnt matter what program I use, it does it... and it seems like it depends on the quality of the clip.. .if its a poor quality clip, it would play... but if its a good quality clip, it would put off within the first few seconds of opening the file... its so damm frustrating... :(
- It is NOT HEAT RELATED as all my fans are clean and all temps are normal.. the fan doesnt even speed up...
- I confirmed this by running Prime95 as well as Stress my pc, with the video stress enabled... and it runs smooth... no issues, besides cpu fan going trough the roof... lol

What I have notices:

-I do suspect it to be a software or driver issue, but I cannot confirm that... but why I say so is because of the fact that I even went as far as re-installing windows (Fresh install) in the past a couple of times... and then it would work fine... up until a certain damm update i suspect, then it would start to do that again...
- I have also tested my rams using MEMTEST and let it run for plenty of passes and no issues was found...

my hardware:

HP Elitebook 8540p
GPU : Nvidia NVS5100m
RAM : 8GB
HDD : 1tb SSHD (Had different HDD's also including SSD - no difference)
OS : Win 7 x64

I dont know what to do anymore, If runs fine with a game that I installed, "Firefighters 2014" , its not the most demanding game, but also not the least... and that runs well without any such issues...

I have no Idea what to do to get this sorted, I also have no Idea where to go look or what to look for in the logs.... if anyone maybe knows of a clever app maybe that will find the problem ;lol.. that would be great... otherwise, guys please help :(

oh and it cant be malware or a virus, as I have updated Malwarebites and Eset Nod32... I cant see that it can be this....

Have u checked minimum and maximum processor state is set to 100%. They should both be 100%. It's a setting tucked away in Power Options called Processor Power Management.

Could be that when you watching a video your CPU is doing the rendering instead of your GPU. I'm no expert it's worth a try to force using only the Nvidia in your bios

Like you said when playing a game this doesn't happen meaning at that time the GPU is in use instead of the on board

Sounds like a driver issue. Try uninstall and reinstall all the gpu drivers bro (you don't need to redo Windows - just the drivers). See if it fixes it - if it does then wait for next update and do the same if it re-occurs.

No I will look into that and respond.

ok... but not sure how to change that, I will look in BOIS and see if there is any such settings...

I have tried removing the drivers before I did the re-install... it didnt work... I uninstalled them all...
Or even try going to an earlier version of driver.

Went to earlier versions also.. no success... :(

When you say "before u did the reinstall" are u talking about OS reinstall or gpu driver reinstall?

I first updated the drivers... wher that didnt work I uninstalled drivers before re-installing other drivers... that also did not work... so then I re-installed Windows in the end... and that worked... for a while... :( I suspect as the system updated over time, the problem returned.. so I have absolutely no Idea where the culprit lies...

The MINIMUM Processor state is at 5%... but Maximum is at 100% why is it on 5%? and sure I should leave it on 100%?

They should both be on 100%. But maybe you're getting confused with power and battery. It is usually defaulted to 5% on battery. So is your "5%" on power or battery setting? If it's power then change it to 100% and see if it fixes anything.

I just put both "on battery and Plugged in" up to 100% for the minimum and Max... played a video and it didnt go off! HELL THANKS!! I hope that this was the issue all along... I Do remember times when it would play and other times it wouldnt but I cant recall having it plugged in or not.. but all I do know is that lately I couldnt get it to play anything at all..

so you think I should bring the percentage a bit down on the "Battery" setting? what would you say it must be for both Plugged in and battery?

100% is fine dude. It's a power setting, personal preference. Not gonna do any harm, will just suck more battery when u not powered. If that's an issue 4 u then just toggle it to 100% only at the times u need to. Edit: Well I'm anal with these things. I'd mess around with different battery settings to see where the issue is. Only then would I be able to rest. But if u want a quick fix then leave it at 100% and monitor any difference in how it sucks your battery's juice. If you don't notice it, and if you don't notice any heating, well then... just prosper.

I will play with it a bit and leave it at a setting for a week or so... to see if its stable.. then change it a bit more...

But my question now... how is it then that Prime95 and Stress my PC did sweet blue bogerall to the pc? surely that stresses the CPU badly...?

Ya I don't know man. It's one of those weird quirks I suppose. I've heard about a similar issue before from an old work colleague. The manufacturer gave him that fix so when I read your post it came to mind. Had to fiddle a bit to find it tho.

Well bud all I can say is MOERSE DANKIE!! you have no Idea how much of a frustration this caused me!!

Btw, I quickly played with this now.. with Min on 30% and Max on 60% on battery = Restart!
with Min on 60% and Max on 100% on battery = Restart!
I put it back to 100% on min and 100% on max on battery = no restart... so I will probably just leave it like that! lol

Anyway, thanks again, Im off to a bit of rest.. :)

ag hell! been going very well... watching movies all the time... tonight for the first time.. on battery, started watching a Youtubr video while having some things in background, and it shut off again....

this is obviously a Processor power management issue.. its almost sorted 100% with the adjustment of the 5% to 100%... it seems that inder some load or mulsti tasking the problem still persists on battery mode... :(

Ag no... The problem is STILL present... Its better since the power management adjustment but still shuts off.. Its driving me mad!

cool... I will double check, but I know for a FACT its not temp... Nothing is overheating, cpu van works nice, spins up when workload kncreases... Spins down when Idle... Im almost certain its a software issue... Coz when windows is freshly installed... Before any updates are done... Then it never does it... So... Or maybe drivers... But I have tried different drivers.. I cant seem to fibd the culprit

Try disabling video hardware acceleration in the application it happens most often in. If it works the gfx drivers are most likely the cause.

It happens in any video app... Browsers.. And kn Facebook when watching videos... Any good quality videos...
