So in my Signature is my build (or what's left of it).
I stopped using the PC around a year ago (might be longer), unplugged it and stored it. then after a couple of months I wanted to boot it up again but all of a sudden the PC would no longer boot, the thing is even this was a while ago and I cant remember 100% what the symptoms was but I THINK what happened is I would power the PC on, fans would start turning for a couple of seconds and then the PC would turn off again. I did a little troubleshooting by removing the PSU, GPU, RAM and all the drives but had no luck, so I put everything away again and in the mean time I also sold the GPU.

Fast forward to last week, I decided again that I want to get the PC assembled and running, so I put the RAM back, put the SSD back and reconnected the PSU ( when I removed the PSU I left the cables plugged into the motherboard so non of that changed). plugged in the power and as soon as I turned the PSU on by the power switch on the PSU it blew the PSU, sparks and smoke erupted within the PSU and the power tripped.

So I am pretty sure the PSU is Fucked, but I am not 100% sure of the rest of the PC.

Now I am concerned that IF the motherboard is the cause it might fry another PSU if I just replace the PSU, is this possible? can a faulty motherboard cause PSU failure like that?
I doubt the RAM, Cooler, SSD or CPU could cause that.

How would I go about testing?

That's called "catastrophic failure". I would get a new PSU first and see if anything on the mobo survived. If it won't boot with a new PSU, then replace the mobo, and then other parts. Chances are the mobo also went the way of the PSU though.

EDIT: And no, a faulty mobo won't cause catastrophic failure like that. Your original symptoms (before you packed it away) also indicates a faulty PSU.

Thanks for the reply man I appreciate it.
Would be nice if the rest of the PC survived, I want to upgrade to ryzen but preferably only next year.

Okay, I need advise again.

so I purchased a anyson power supply secondhand from carb and turns out everything was not blown and it was infact my old PSU that blew. been using the pc now for a while and even got a 1080ti last week to really start using the system. this morning while browsing files on my pc (no load whatsoever) it just died. now when I press the power button I hear a click from the power supply and it turns off immediately.

surely it cant be another psu failure?

dan wonder mense hoekom ek console verkies

Nee Oom, PCMR!

This might just be purely bad luck but I am no expert with PSUs but the clicking sound might be that something is not getting enough power or an indication of short to ground somewhere.

You not going to like this recommendation but I would say disassemble the whole PC and build it over again.

thanks for the advice, I also see no other option than to strip the pc again. I have a cheap psu I can test with so lets see.

Are you running the PC from a UPS? The power supplied from Eishkom via the wall is quite "dirty".

I suspect the power you are getting from the wall is the culprit and could've blown another psu.

Another thing to try and do is strip the entire pc out of the case and run it on a desk (or something that's not conductive to electricity) to see if a ground short (something on the mobo/psu touching the case) isn't causing the issue.

Most newer decent psu's have surge/short protection and in most cases when the psu dies it usually dies in isolation, but depending on the spike/fault it -could- affect other components.

I can see the cpu cooler and the gpu lights come on breefly with the psu but then everything turns off again. I dont have a ups no, but I have not lost any electronics in the past duw to power (except the previous PSU) so not sure if it can be eskom's fault not noted thanks. also dont hink its contact in the case as the pc was running fine for over a week with gaming use and heavy cpu load. but again noted thanks. I will start stripping it later today and see if I can find something mentioned above or anything else.

Hey bud

Just see if the PSU still powers on jump start it (green wire and any black (ground wire) , this will give you a indication if the PSU still starts up. Unfortunately it wont tell you if PSU will work under load.

I installed a tester psu and the pc starts, so the PSU is the problem, just not sure why the psu died.
I can hear a relay in the psu turning on and then it turns back off almost immediately.

If it is the same PSU I saw here on the forum, the seller did state he got the POP with warranty remaining.

So maybe sent it back to Wootware for an RMA?

for the andyson I did get the POP yeah, I sent wootware a mail to ask what the process is to get it to them as I am in Boksburg.

it is odd though that i've lost two power supplies on this system but I cant think that another faulty component is causing the trouble, it was running 100% for a week now since I got the GPU in and it was running like forest gump, until this morning. but anything is possible these days.

Yeah, that is really strange, also considering that the Andyson PSU had a solid rating and all, not that you used a cheap Raidmax of some sort.

The problem is computers, super strange creatures. One day everything works fine and out of blue, it does not.

I really hope you get sorted, should not be a problem with Wootware that actually gives after-sale support.

Could possibly be wall supply issue of maybe breaker.
I would test on another plug and see.

That does suck that you have lost 2 psu's bud but at least this one is under warranty

I hope wootware can assist.

with all the bad experiences I've read on Carb I have also stopped supporting evetech (although I never had a bad experience myself I still feel what they do to other clients are wrong) and I started supporting Wootware and am really impressed thus far.

Wootware are great. They deserve the business.
