Mecer K3G3R 31.5" QHD (2560x1440) 144Hz Freesync Curved Gaming Monitor - REVIEW-

Hi all,

Apologies for not having done the introduction section yet, but I wanted join this conversation as well.

I also bought this monitor from Rebel tech about 3 weeks ago. I have not done any calibration as of yet as I am not sure how.
I have only done the basics like enable Freesync and change response time to fastest. As have not yet had a lot of time to play around and test but here is a brief summary of my experience:
  • When I started up my G-Sync Enabled was tick by default. I only had to change my refresh rate to 144hz in the drop down.
  • I have only done the testufo check to see whether it picks up the 144hz and that was successful.
  • The problem now comes in where I am not sure that the 144hz is actually working in game. Things feel smooth but not WOW!. I cannot see any tearing at all. So for me Freesync is defenitely working but I am not sure about the 144hz. I am wondering is there is some other trick (as mentioned above by someone else).
  • I have only run Apex Legends and Insurgency Sandstorm and BF1. All of them at fullscreen with now issues (no flickering)
  • I am trying to purchase Battlefield V via Origin Access but for some reason my payment details keeps on rejecting (will continue this discussion on a different thread)
  • It would be great if someone can guide me with some calibration tips for this monitor.
  • If anyone wants me to test or try out some feature, feel free to ask.
So far I have not had ANY bad experience with this monitor, even though I might not even be using it at its full potential.

My hardware: i5 6600K @4.5ghz; 16Gb @2666Mhz; Asus ROG Strix GTX1080; 960EVO NvMe SSD; Samsung 43" KU7000 UHD TV (previous display)

Is this your first 144Hz? There's nothing wow about 144Hz......until you decide that and go back to 60Hz that is.
And as much as I like GSync, the best way to experience high refresh is unsynced and unrestricted.

Because remember what GSync and Freesync actually do is change your Hz to match your FPS. So if you're getting only ~80 FPS the monitor is only running at ~80Hz.

Yes it is.
I am going to try disabling the GSync Compatibility mode from Nvidia Console and then try again.

As others have said . Disable all Freesync, Gsync if your computer can handle it . The key why this monitor is a good option is the large size, 1440P ,144hz and decent price .
I think all these options and Sync modes are just frustrating buyers . Keep it simple
If you're buying the monitor for Freesync and /or Gsync then you are missing the point.
You should be buying it for 1440P / 144Hz reasons.

I presume most people buying this monitor have pretty powerful graphics cards, so FPS should not be an issue.

Agreed but myself as a owner of this monitor has enabled freesync and gsync and set the response time to fastest and I've experienced no issues whatsoever, games running amazingly with no flickering or anything.

32" - moer groot - check
144hz - frikken vinnig - check
cheap - double check.

I have no issues with mine and the best i have ever had, maybe i am just lucky. Who cares but i love mine.

Exactly the same for me with mine

Running a 1070 here, and I am glad to have the option to use adaptive sync, as it helps if I'm playing a taxing game (and especially now that I am in 2K). That being said, I am inclined to agree that if you want a monitor with an adaptive sync feature, it's worth making sure it will work perfectly, as intermittent flickering and the like can quite frustrating if you can't figure out what is causing it. It works under most scenarios for me, and very well, from what I can tell, fortunately, but not consistently enough that I'd comfortably recommend the monitor on that point in particular.

I've been following this thread for a while now. I'm considering to purchase this monitor. Currently I have a basic bitch LG 27" IPS panel 1080p at 60hz.

However, I still split between the Dell S2716DG and the Mecer K3G3R. I'm gatvol for screen tearing, that is the primary reason I'm considering the Dell.

On a side note will my pc be able to handel 1440p at 144hz?
I've got the following:
CPU - i7 6700
RAM - 8gb adata at 2133mhz
GPU - MSi gaming 1080ti
got an ssd as well, but that is not relevant I guess.

I'm playing CSGO and PUBG primarily.

So I what I am asking is:
  1. Does gsync perform adequately on this panel, with the new driver?
  2. Can I even get 144fps with my setup at 1440p?

I've never seen 1440p at 144hz, so I've got big expectations coming from 1080p at 60hz.

Yes it will run a lot of games at that rez and frame rate. I have the same screen with a 1080ti and a i9-9900k. Most still full graphics.

Like I said in my previous post, I cannot confirm or deny whether everything is actually working as it should BUT I have not had any issues with this monitor.
The GSync Compatibility mode enables without any issues and I can see in FRAPS that it locks it at 144hz in Apex Legends.
Also, interesting fact, sometimes my Apex starts up in windowed mode and the screen never shows any flickering issues. 4 weeks in and I have never seen any flickering at all, in any game.

You will most definitely get those frames with your card, well depends on your quality settings. I usually just rely on Geforce Experience for every game.

I cannot truly say whether the Dell monitor is actually better than this monitor because I have never experienced it, BUT I personally think that this is the BEST value for money monitor out there currently!.

P.S I am still running factory settings on my monitor. It would be awesome if someone can give me some tips on maybe properly calibrating this monitor.

The flickering (it's a bit hard to see on the video):

Bizarrely, it only flickers when it's the active window - If you click on another window, the flickering stops.

edit

I've just noticed, it's not just the iCUE app that's flickering; it's the whole screen (not noticeable on a dark background, but very obvious on a white background).

This flickering happens if you enable super resolution on the monitor. It should not be enabled unless you are upscaling from something like 1080p. If you switch off super resolution I think a lot of your problems will disappear.

Maybe add a bit more RAM so you don't run into issues with high resolution gaming. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Saw UFDtech did a review on this one today:

@UFDisciple - Not sure if you've seen this thread but are you able to comment on any of the issues reported here with regards to your panel?

Oooof. That was a bit painful to watch. Calling it a review is being generous.

Good to see I'm not missing out too much with my older GN32Q though, mainly just looks (mine is gold ffs).

Just make sure you have adequate distance between yourself and the screen. the PPI on mine really doesn't bother me ! Of course there's always supersampling ;)

The ppi of 1440p is the same at 32" as it is for 1080p on 27", my only reason for considering the screen is for MP gaming, I recently went from a 43" UHD 60hz TV with input lag back to my 27 1080p 120Hz samsung, and although the higher frames and response is great on the 27" now, I really do miss the big screen, so much easier to see people at long distance and aim at them, makes me wonder how people like shroud plays on 24" so well.

Anyone know the weight of of the mecer monitor without the stand?

I disagree. Ok maybe the numbers match up but I have both a 27" 1080P and the 32" 1440P and the 32" looks much much better. Sharper, clearer, cleaner and the pixels don't stare at you as much, in fact I don't notice them at all.

Is there a 24" equivalent, why is everything so expensive in SA, screen on Amazon - $199 the same one in SA is R5k.

A 24" equivalent would be Samsung's CFG70. But no, there are no cheap local 144Hz VAs like Vioteks, Pixios, Inno&CN or whatever else comes out of china.
All other 24" monitors I can think of use TN panels.

It really makes a difference how far you are from the screen. I moved mine back a bit and BOOM ! rocking. You can always use DSR if you have a problem with PPI. I was playing some RoE @ 4K 144hz upscaled and it actually looked pretty good. Text is still a bit fuzzy though.

No more fuzzy than 24" up close.
In fact I would regard a 32" and 24" to have the same PPI/sharpness/clarity levels.
And sure 4K 28" and 27" 1440P are sharper but they're too damn small.

And nowhere near as fuzzy as 1080P 27" on which you feel the lack of pixels/size of pixels all over (and yet it's still kinda passable providing you don't ONLY use it for text).

Text will ALWAYS be fuzzyish if you are running a DSR/upscaling res.

The odd thing is though when downscaling to 1080P my 32" looks better than both my 27 inchers.

Apparently anything over 24" has a "TV tax" added on top regardless of whether it has an actual TV tuner installed.. i was both surprised and infuriated when learning of this.

Despite the bloated local price of the Mecer vs. the Amazon variant.. it's actually a much better value proposition than most screens on the market today (SA market)

LG 38WK95C UltraWide WQHD HDR Monitor - Best Deal - South Africa <--- I mean who are they kidding with this pricing.. doesn't even have a G-SYNC module to try and justify the price.
You can literally buy a top QLED (120hz) or even OLED for less.. its simply mental. I hope they import hundreds of these, never find any buyers and just sit on this stock for the next 3 years.

LG 34GK950G 34" Curved Gaming Monitor - Best Deal - South Africa <-- Where's the Freesync version of this panel ??? I'd love to buy this panel with R4K - R5K knocked off the price once you get rid of the GSYNC tax.. oh wait that would actually make sense and be consumer friendly.. sorry SA not today ;) not any day..

Personally I'm waiting for the arrival of the AOC CQ32G1:

I know it's probably the exact same panel, or has minor differences compared to the existing AOC AG322QCX, however I prefer the design language of the CQ32G1.

I'm going to assume that they are sitting on loads of these as well, so there's pretty much zero incentive to import the CQ32G1 model at this stage.

The AOC monitor is identical to the Mecer one FYI. Apart from aesthetics of course :p

The TFT Tax applies to all monitors over 18.5". It's quite pricey to import larger screens. Shipping, Duties, TFT Tax etc all adds up :(

Did you miss the fact that it's bigger with a higher res than anything that has come before it? It's basically a 4K ultrawide with HDR. So yes, it will demand a hefty premium.

Yeah that's top of the top right now i'd rate ...

Good size , 144hz , IPS , 3480x, HDR

It's basically everything you could ever ask for plus it has freesync.

I'm interested to see if other manufacturers bring out screens similar to this. Hopefully in a year or two they a bit more affordable so I can grab one xD

Absolutely - you should be viewing this as 3 x 27" panels imo. Other suppliers will follow suit, however the price will be similar sad to say.
