Mandatory warranty, Was it always a thing?

I've been browsing the second hand car market, mainly to see what is currently out there.
I've noticed something though, A lot of the ads say that the price excludes Mandatory Warranty.

I have only had a handful of cars and I don't ever recall a mandatory warranty. I almost got a scirocco off some turd bucket dealership who promised to fix quite a few things before I took it from them. Got there to sign for it and nothing had been fixed or sorted so I ended up not going ahead with the deal but there was no Mandatory warranty. Almost went for a Volvo V40 at a Volvo dealership and there was also no warranty required. Same with a Ford Fusion I had, Got it off a Toyota dealership. Also no mandatory warranty.

Is this something new they are implementing when looking at used vehicles? Also, I have never heard anything particularly good about third party warranties. A friend who recently bought a Honda was required to get a warranty and he showed me all the fine print. There are soo many things excluded you might as well not have one.

I've seen some ads where dealerships try to include a warranty but suspect it might be them attempting to clumsily exclude the CPA?

Its not mantory, but normally they will tell you it is or add to your invoice. They make lekker cash on selling these, for no work really need be done from there side.

We Buy Cars force you take warranty if you finance a car, though nobody seem challenge them about it. They make a klling on this!

If you bargain a bit 90% of the dealerships will remove it.

Dealt with a few dealers last year when buying a car almost all of them came down on the price of the car + removed the warranty and license and reg fees.

The warranty is nonsense. My sister bought a Haval h1 from dealership in Durban. 2020 model that still had factory warranty, but they still tried to sell her warranty until I told them to remove it or cancel the deal.

Ah okay. Noted. So it seems the dealers just taking their chances and it works a lot of the time it seems. A few people I know who got their cars last year or relatively recently all complained about this additional mechanical warranty bs.

Look its not a bad thing to have but they overcharge massively for it. I had it on my previous car which was a 2010 we bought from We buy cars. Ended up getting a few things replaced under the warranty which was nice. But like the Haval issue, they still tried to sell the warranty even though they knew the car had factory warranty.....

Extended warranty BS has been a thing forever Mostly the older style and greasy kind of sales people/companies...

It is BS.

The stealership makes comm from selling you the warranty. Just like they d from arranging finance. Hence the "mandatory" - which is illegal to make as a condition of sale.

If you feel the need to purchase an aftermarket warranty then do so after you have purchased the vehicle (or, even whilst negotiating the purchase, just not through the stealership).

It's that rubbish Advanced Motorplan thing. They cover a few things like fuel pump, brake master cylinder and not much else.

No such thing as "mandatory warranty", willing buyer willing seller applies. These non-franchised dealerships are scheisters, they'll do whatever it takes to part you from your money.

You should always negotiate on a car purchase. I think that dealerships make way more money on fees and warranties than they do on the actual car. On my last purchase, they chose to give me a discount on the car rather than remove the licence fee. That worked on the same as me nor paying the licence fee, but I imagine that they got to pocket the R5 000 fee while making the corporate office eat the R5 000 discount on the car.
