Laptop buying advice - too many options

It'll mainly be used for writing reports (MS Word etc) and sending mail, so nothing heavy

If it's really literally this, then on paper any i3 from gen 10 onwards with 8gb ram and a basic ssd will do the job.
 
This Acer isn't bad;

It's a little cheaper and will probably keep up with the ASUS you've mentioned.
 
You are somewhat spot on with the above X515 models, these are your lower end consumer based laptops. You can also look at the Ryzen 5 7000 series options.

However, for the price of R8999 you can have a look at the following Ryzen 7:
