Keyboard Nut Thread

Actually finally "finished" my GMMK Pro build a while ago but forgot to post a pic.

PXL-20230414-135634083.jpg

GMMK Pro black slate
Lynx switches, lubed
Tape modded + extra gaskets
Durock v2 stabilisers
Hype FR4 plate
Akko Neon ASA caps & custom sprayed acrylic knob

Also @Bearman, I found those random few black inks if you are still looking for some.

Looking for a recommendation:

My current is a Cooler Master Storm Quickfire XT with Cherry MX Browns.

What I'm looking for:
  • Compact. Something I can take to the office and travel with.
  • Wireless
  • Brown switches
  • TKL or less. I am looking for something with a compact footprint. Something like the Keychron K2 or K8. (ie, no unnecessary space between keys, if that makes sense).
  • I still want dedicated Home, End, PgUp, PgDown, Ins and Delete keys.
  • Charging port: USBC preferably.

Is there anything other than a Keychron that I should be looking at?

For that specific layout, I think that your best bet is really a Keychron K2, especially in terms of it being wireless.

Today I received some new switches from Kailh. Going to test them on my Ducky One 3 and then Keychron V1.

Hello to anybody interested in reading this post! I hope there will be some people to help out with this possibly short lived hobby entry (although I see many people say this is a rabbit hole of note so who knows). Sorry for this long read.

So first off, I'm currently debating entering the custom keyboard world in order to replace my currently dying keyboard (or maybe get a prebuilt that can be customized in future), but the thing is I'm not too sure where to begin. I'll first start off by listing my needs with this board and then share where I'm currently at.

So as of now, my needs for this board are:
1 - Must be TKL or minimum 65% layout. From my research I've done thus far it seems 65% is the sweet spot without sacrificing too much.
2 - Must have wireless capability. I've seen some boards can do both wired and wireless so that would be a great option for flexibility but I plan to mainly go for the wireless option.
3 - Switches should allow for a good balance of typing/gaming experience. I'm not a typing wizard but I'd like it to at least be somewhat comfortable to type with if needed. My current keyboard is a Gamdias Hermes P1 with cherry brown switches so I'm open to any switch recommendations.
4 - Mustn't be too pricey. I don't mind if I end up enjoying the hobby so much that i sink money in down the line but right now I'm hoping to aim for something relatively bang for buck/budget. (I feel like R2000 is a solid amount to start but I don't mind shooting further than that depending on feedback given)

Here is where I'm at:
1 - I've got a Gamdias Hermes P1 with cherry brown switches i believe. Its a full size board and I'm, looking to scale it down for more desk space. The board is purely wired and I'd love the wireless capability so i can reduce cable clutter on my desk. Also i got the board for free as a replacement from someone on Carb so I'm not one to complain.
2 - I'm in the research phase but looking for any direction/ideas? From what I've seen the keychron K2 is a solid pick down to the Royal Kludge RK68?

Like I say I'm open to all ideas and guidance as I'm just dipping my toe into the world of custom keyboards and keyboard modding. Cheers!

There is a lot of guys here and on the SAKB discord with a literal world of knowledge (and keyboards worth that of a small car). Sure theyll be able to give advice.

K2 is a solid pick. I think that board was discussed earlier in this thread as well.

I have the K2 (Gateron Red) and it's a great pick. It's compact but still has all the keys you need (F-keys and del/pgup/pgdn etc.). The linear switches are pre-lubed so they're nice and smooth without you needing to lube them yourself, stabilisers are lubed too. It's an easy recommend, I'd absolutely buy it again.

I also put a PBT keycap set on it, but the included caps are quite good, it's not required to change them IMO:

Agree with the Keychron picks, I had the K6 with Akko Wave keycaps and it was really nice for it's price. If you want to look a reseller that stocks Keychron product have a look here : Keychron – CGSATech

I dont know if anyone is interested or not but if you dont know.

We have some new Keychron stock that is selling fast.

Website Link: www.cgsatech.co.za/brands/keychron

See the Carbonit threads below:

If you want some cool switches to put in your keychron from @XtaCy696 | CGSATech or your Monsgeek from @ctrlshiftesc_za then take a look at Cafege

I'm hoping to bring in a couple thing if anyone wants to split shipping (tbd, I need to put in the order form before I can get a quote from the store)

They also have XHT-BDZ and a lot of the geonworks tools if you were curious about those

Hi all, I am not sure as to the exact rules of this thread regarding ads however I would like to tell you all about Type Tech, a small custom mechanical keyboard business which is focused on the enthusiast community in South Africa which is so often overlooked. I am aiming to give the community more choice.

We currently have these products in stock:
  • C3Equalz Banana Splits and Kiwis
  • KTT Sea Salt Lemons
  • Gateron Milky Yellows
  • Gateron Greens

Thank you all for your time!

Welcome,

You might want to look at the rules about reselling on the forum 👌🏼

Hi, thank you for sending the forum rules through, since I am not selling anything on Carbonite at the moment would I still have to buy the reseller membership? Thanks for your time!
You have to have reseller even if you're advertising your store elsewhere, as far as I know

Edit: Check the italicised line

Reseller requirements:

A normal or VIP member will need to purchase a Classifieds Reseller subscription under the following circumstances, or if a member of staff decides you need one:

  • If more than one new item is sold at a time.
  • If more than one new item is sold within a six month period.
  • If we detect a pattern of buying with the intention of reselling to turn a profit.
  • If services are being offered.
  • If we decide that you are using Carbonite as profit-making endeavour such as a business, however small it may be.
  • If you would like to advertise for an outside company.

Hi all. Im new to customising keyboards and wanted to try burger mount my new keyboard coming next month which requires 4x1x1.5 mm silicone O rings. Does anyone know where i can get these in South Africa/JHB?.. i kinda imported 3 times this year already and dont have an importers code so cant get it from amazon(also getting it overseas wud probz cost alot more than buying it locally). Also if in the future i wanted to import more keyboard things, do yall just get an importers code to bypass the 3 time import limit?..dont know if theres a downside to getting the code either(like a monthly charge or something).

Going back to this, as I haven't found anything else that is suitable.

Looking for advice from anyone:

Where can I buy a Keychron from locally? Or is buying direct from overseas better?

I should be able to assist, are you looking for the K2 specifically or are you open to some options?

Howzit the people of carb

I was hoping that someone could assist me with my Logitech G Pro keyboard's mechanical switches The WASD switches need to be replaced but they are not hot-swappable does anyone perhaps know where someone can fix these switches, Any help in this matter would be highly appreciated.

if no one is available close by I will gladly use @Cujo26 to assist me

thanks

@Cujo26 is a great bet. they most likely just need to be replaced based on age and usage ...

Good evening!
I'm looking to upgrade my keyboard a bit and I saw the Zoom 75 , I have not done a group buy before and not too sure how the shipping works.
I saw on previous posts on this thread that the store is legit, but do they ship to South Africa or will I need to find an alternative way?
I currently have the GMMK Pro (Fr4, PE foam, lubed NK creams) but the keyboard feels really stiff. Any alternative suggestions would also be appreciated, but from what I've seen people really like the Zoom 75 / TKL

Hey bud!

As far as I know Keebsforall ships pretty much anywhere internationally, as to whether they use a courier or USPS (Post Office) I'm not sure and you might be best served joining their discord and asking there.

The Monsgeek M1 is up that alley too, and available from CSE, but I don't unfortunately have one to tell you if the board will have the same sort of "bounce" one would expect form a good gasket mount board. Hopefully someone who owns one can chime in!
