Keyboard Nut Thread

Easy decision tbh. Fuel for scoot > keeb.
I need another keeb though.
Going back to work more often and I don't want to keep carting the K8.

So plan would be to move that to the office and then have a decent keeb at home.

I'm sure someone will be. It's still a fantastic prebuilt.

Hi all, I'm new to all of this. Got all of my components for my first build, but I made the noob mistake of ordering the switches from the UK and now it has to go through customs and post office.

So I'm really itching to build the thing, and was wondering if anyone perhaps has some old switches they would be willing to sell? I need 83 switches, and don't really mind which switches they are, would love to try out tactile and speed switches, but not at all required.

If someone perhaps knows where I can buy some new switches that are on the cheaper side locally, that would also be great. Was only able to find some on Evetech and CtrlShiftEsc, but those are a bit pricey for temporary switches.

I've also made a post in peripherals classifieds, but thought I might have some luck here. Thanks!

Where you based dude?
I have a pack of Gat browns that you could possibly use.

Well I sit here typing on my new GMMK Pro with Panda lubed switches after just finishing putting it together... and OMG I clearly had no idea about good keyboard! (and I know for some major enthusiasts this GMMK Pro is an 'average' starter keyboard at best)

I was expecting a little nicer maybe than the mainstream boards im used to from Logitech and Corsair... but not even close. This thing is amazing! and the sound a keystrokes are just crazy smooth, its not even a close match - basically the jump from a shitty membrane bundles keyboard to the MX brown Logitech... this is the same jump again if that makes sense. The Logitech G513 on my desk with MX browns feels horrific now. lol

So im gonna end up having to now cart this keyboard to work each day I think.

I can see myself having to sort out a second for the office... but need the wallet to recover a bit first.

Awesome stuff! Glad you are enjoying it. Are you using the GOAT stabs?

Just a small correction though, the G513 came with 'GX Browns'. Which I rate is some clone. They are not mx browns.

Yes im on the stock stabs right now.. they actually feel not bad tbh (although again im coming from very low bar clearly).. no sticking or rattling that I heard and watched so much about on the reviews.

I took a close look as most reviews I saw complained about being majorly overlubbed and i should clean them up, but they looked fine so I left them stock. Maybe they have corrected this issue a little?

I might swap them out for the Durock V2's on ctrl, shift, esc anyway (if i put an order in with them I will def add them to the order) - but for now I will just use it for a while and get used to the board I think - R6k+ this month for a keyboard is probably enough. lol.

And yes I think you are indeed correct about the G513. Previously I had a Corsair with MX silent reds and my home board is a K95 MX Speeds though, and this feels leagues above both of those too. I think i prefer a tactile switch to linear for sure. Maybe because of the knockoff browns I've been typing with for a long time at work.

Please do let me know if the Ducrock's fit.
Heard they hit and miss.

If I do get the board, I'll probably get some C3 stabs.

@-Gifted- with time you will learn the impact different components make to the overall feel and sound of the keyboard.

I think the majority of feedback you are enjoying now from your keyboard can be attributed to the Glorious Panda switches. They are fantastic, and definitely top shelf stuff. And you got yours pre lubed, which is better than no lube, but not as consistent as lubing them yourself. :p

PBT caps are vastly superior to almost anything you get on a prebuilt. The case is full aluminium tank. Just the weight of the thing makes it feel exceptionally premium.

You can't compare your board to pre builts anymore. This is an entirely different league.

Watching videos is a great way to get info about components, boards etc. But r/mk should be your main source of info.

If you are willing to file them a bit, you can make them fit no problem.

Odd are, that they will spend their entire life in the GMMK Pro. So just mod and glue them in. :p

I understand that they always fit the Poly plate .. and generally fit the aluminium plate, but the brass plate seems to always be an issue. Im on the stock aluminium plate so yea potentially I might have to get the file out for them - Again it was something Glorious knew about and said they would fix so new boards might be very different from all the 2020 reviews (A little like the sticking over lubbed stabs that mine def doesnt have)

I have Durocks in my GMMK Pro and mine is the original release before they started working on the fitment of the stock plate. It did take a bit of force to get them in, but if you spend some time with a file or sand paper you could make them fit ez no problem.

Too gamery for me but kinda cool. took my Drop MT3 Black on white keycaps off because I may want to use them on my Mode SixtyFive, while I wait for my GMK nightshade set.

Hi all,

I have a KBDfans KBDPAD MKII Mechanical Keyboard Kit in Black with a Brass plate that I was planning to build but have had to change some plans on.

Wanted to offer it to you addicts first before posting it elsewhere on the forums.

Looking to make back what I paid for it (R1 350) and am happy to meet somewhere around Melrose Arch in JHB or ship at your cost using Postnet.

If you want/need pics drop me a DM and we can chat.

Thought I would share with those not already in the Keyn Discord. If you are and have already seen it a few times, apologies, this is the last of it 😂

Discipline v2 65% - keyn.co.za
Custom case - 'Caprice 65'
Akko Wave Caps - ctrlshiftesc.co.za
Dwarf Factory Terrarium v2
C³EQUALZ 67g Tangies Lubed with 205g0
Durock v2 Stabs lubed with 205g0

I want to do unspeakable things to that board

Anyone compare Everglide Aqua King to Durock POM Linear? Im keen to know how they stack up against each other, specifically with stem wobble and push feel.

Also let me know if I should expand my shortlist... Not sure if there are better buys in 2022.

So after going through several reviews and recent user reports, it seems inconsistencies still plague the Aqua Kings. I was planning to buy extra switches to account for any bad switches, but why should I have to deal with that?

Durock POM Linears have universal praise, but let through verrry little backlight. I'm not into RGB, but that might still annoy me over the long-term.

So I'm now leaning towards the Black Box Inks to replace my Milky Yellows.

Or maybe I should stick with them and wait for Box Inks V3.1.10-958747.

I can be of assistance.... I have all of the above.

The Aqua Kings feel great, sound great and are by far the best looking switches I own. Regarding inconsistencies, I would take almost everyone's input with a grain of salt. r/mk is notorious for jumping on bandwagons and perpetuating the initial impressions they hear from the big guys. "Aqua kings ARE known to be inconsistent, therefore this batch I just bought MUST be inconsistent as well." Which is just not true. This same phenomenon plagues the audiophile world.

The POM Linears feel great, sound good, looks like every other switch out there.

It's a difficult thing to put one above the other, as they do feel and sound slightly different. Thus I have both. If I had to buy one, I would buy the Aqua Kings, but that is all my subjective opinion. You won't go wrong with either of them.

If you want to buy end-game now, just buy some Black Ink V2 switches with Krytox. Done.

ps. I am in Pta East. I can borrow you a few switches to compare for yourself. Unfortunately, these are my top linear switches so you can't have them. :)

Thanks, I appreciate your detailed reply based on real world experience.

Oddly enough, I unsubbed from r/mk. It's a literal echo chamber, like most subreddits.

Shouldn't I wait for the Black Box Inks instead of Black Ink V2? Only the sound seems to be worse off, but smoothness and stem wobble are reported to be better.

NB: I'm currently using Milky Yellows (lubed with Krytox). It's a great switch at the price, but I'm itching for something new. Ideally with less stem wobble and a better feel.

Great, then you understand 100% what I mean. Some okes take a few minutes to convince. I'm still subbed for the dank photos though.

The stem wobble on any box switch is noticeably less. Apparently the current box blacks are just as smooth as the v2s... ? I will have to feel it to believe it. :p

The way the black ink v2s bottom out are amazing! None of my other switches gives the same fingy feels. But they are quite a bit more pricey than aqua kings and POM linears.

I do believe the box inks have similar actuation forces to your yellows? Do you enjoy the 50g actuation? If so, don't go black ink v2s. Not worth spring swopping such an expensive switch in my opinion.

You also stand to lose nothing by waiting for the next iteration of box blacks. If nothing really bothers you with the milky yellows, then wait before you buy. If money isn't a factor, buy all of them. :D

Panda coming at us again with the best responses. I am, personally, a Durock POM stan, however I don't use RGB in any of my boards

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advice.

I think I'm gonna wait for the Box Inks. I was on the verge of trying the Aqua Kings after Panda's feedback, but I don't want to clutter up the house and waste money by changing too often. I already have too many other hobbies doing that sadly.

Im sure you guys will get Box Inks  and provide solid feedback. Or maybe Akko x TTC will be king then?

Hey all! I am new to the forum and kinda wish I had discovered this community before I embarked on my mechanical keyboard adventure. If I am posting in the wrong area of the forum, my apologies.

I just recently (this weekend) finished this build.

Tofu65 keyboard case
with copper weight and plate
KBD67 Rev2 soldered PCB
Cherry MX Browns lubed with 205g0
Durock V2 stabilizers lubed with 205g0 and band-aid mod
PBT Retro 80s Keycaps

Most of everything came from KBDFans except for equipment and lube which I sourced from the states.

I realise I chose pretty noob switches but my lord they feel better than anything I have ever typed on. Nevertheless, the bug has bitten and I am planning my next build.

Are there better ways to get parts to South Africa? This exercise was incredibly expensive, with just under 50% of the costs going to shipping and customs.

How are enthusiasts enjoying this hobby in South Africa without taking out a second morgage?

Also is there a second-hand market for this level of custom mechanical keyboards? I see a bunch of commercial mechanical boards on here being resold, but is there a market for luxury boards?

You can generally find parts from keyn.co.za or ctrlshiftesc.co.za

Most of us who do have bits to resell tend to do so under peripherals, but discovery isn't great.
