Keyboard Nut Thread

Been waiting for a few laser cut stainless steel plates, but lockdown has them delayed proper.

Looking at someone local willing to cut them for me now. Just confirming prices and logistics.

I am going to do my first 'normal' custom. Pretty excited. I only have 1u caps though, so I will have to use modifiers from some salvaged sets.

Guess I'm printing some keycaps tonight...

Wow! Those tiny displays! :love::love:
Those tiny OLED displays are awesome, and inexpensive. I have a few that I fiddle with from time to time. You can program QMK to display info on them, such as active layer, wpm, time of day, weather... Anything really. You can also call a local script on your PC that passes the display info back to the controller to display. Pretty neat.

So I have a Gamdias Hermes P1 with brown switches. I am wondering if getting some Gat-Blues from evetech and replacing them would make a major difference? Of course some new keycaps would also go on it. I really like the clicky switches and recently the browns on the P1 is just not feeling that great.

This is just a little project that I am wondering if it will be worthwhile to make it feel a little more solid. I would like to get some Kailh BOX switches but I know that's going to happen anytime soon.

Gat blues are great switches.

I'm just not sure if desoldering and soldering new switches to a Gamdias is worth it. Personally I wouldn't invest the time.

Besides the time component, unless the person doing the desoldering has some experience doing so, chances of destroying a track is very high.

Gateron Blues are great for typing and feel, but probably the worst sounding of them all - very high pitched.

Why not get the Hermes P1 with blue switches for R649 and sell the brown?

But would you do it for the science? Lolz.

Yeah I should probably just get a 60% or 65% board and build from there. But I am itching to build something and I am not wanting to wait for board and case to come in. Already waiting so long for my AP2 to get here.

Any advice on some local stuff I can look at to scratch this build itch I have? I have some keycaps laying around. Will probably grab some Gat Blues. Yes I know my way around a soldering iron. Not really interested in a full size.

I was going the down the keyboard rabbit hole deciding on what i wanted for my custom board but now due to the rona its on hold.

Is it worth opening up my DuckyOne 2 and lubing the red switches and stabilisers in the interim or rather wait for the custom one?

I might not be lubing the first time I open up my Ducky, but I certainly am going to add in some foam to dampen he resonant sound they exude. Just achieve something a little quieter and get used to the layout in the chassis, then later on I will lube them once I decide if I comfortable with the possibility of losing the tactileness in the Browns.

Maybe lube the least used key on your board (Scroll Lock?). Tap it daily for about a week or two and reassess?

I haven't done lubing yet myself, but wouldn't you only lube the parts other than the tactile bump (which would minimise loss of tactileness)?

No you lube the switch. I.e. finger the actual switch with a brush coated in lube.

@Virus I have a 60% so all my keys get used, the key with the least use probably is the right-handed windows key. and It's not worth it for me to lube literally one key, that's meh. Full send or no send.

YES, lube is always worth it on linear switches.

I've had success with teflon lube used for bike chains, on stabs and slides. It's not the best for the switches themselves, but does a good enough job since it's so easily accessible.

This works well in a pinch:

Ladies, this might have been mentioned somewehere here, but cannot find it with the seasrch function (other than a shop specialising in o-rings for various uses). Any shop in SA that carries stock (otherwise I migth as well import via Amazon)?

DIERYA DK61 Pro 60% Mechanical Keyboard Wireless/Wired

The keyboard is very customizable, this will keep me busy for a few days. The RGB lighting is very cool and neat (I am not an RGB guy). I am busy with AutoHotKey to script my daily use of special characters. The cool thing is you have different profiles which you can switch between. It is awesome how good the software works for this not so popular keyboard brand. I am surprised by the build quality and switch feel, very happy with my purchase!

Not going to lie, I am jealous. Can you please share the exact brand/model? What switches are you running.

Autohotkey is an amazing piece of software. If you do a lot of typing I can share my helper function script with you to quickly navigate text in a unix fashion. I cannot use a windows machine without the use of AHK. If you do anything tricky or what you feel is out of the norm, please share. I love to see how people config their daily driver setups.

Hello sir. What orings do you need? Unfortunately there are no shops that carry keyboard specific items in South Africa. Nothing more than a keycap set or two.

For orings, you should check out any specialised store in your area. You can search google for 'bearings and seals'. Bearing shops usually carry a large range of seals and orings. I use bearing net in Silverton, Pretoria.

You can also try RS Components or communica online for tiny orings.

DIERYA DK61 Pro 60% Mechanical Keyboard Wireless/Wired (Gateron Optical Black)

I do type a lot, mainly for my university assignments. It is really cool software, could actually help me with the programming I'll have later this year.

My config is so far nothing special:

^e:: send é
return

:*:andre::André

^o:: send ô
return

^+s:: Run, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe"

^+c:: Run, control.exe

I have configured the script to automatically run when my laptop boots up. So no need to open the file each time.

Very basic so far. still seeing what I need. I am not a heavy user in terms of hotkeys.

There is almost no reason to lube tactile switches. Only lube the stabalizers.
I completely do not agree. IMO lubing tactiles is 100% worth it. (depending on what you started with of course. Some switches cannot be saved by lube.)

This is for a Razer Blackwidow Tournament with green switches, which from my reading is similar to MX Blues. The clickity clicks is just way too pronounced and annoys people on the other side of the net/mic. Discord's Krisp does remove the issue, but we then experience some or other break in communication every now and then.

This will literally be the first time I would touch anything keyboard related, so I have no idea what I am doing or looking for. From my reading people seems to reccommend 40A 1.5mm orings - whether one would be able to spec this with a local shop I am not sure.

There was a long discussion on r/mk regarding this topic awhile ago. I will try find the link for you to give a read through if you are keen. I was skeptical, so I tried it for myself on various tactile switches. I would not be able to identify 5 out of 10 switches if 50% were lubed in a bag of 10 switches.

I guess that depends on what you use for lube, but IME it makes a day/night difference (at least on gateron). Next time you do the 50/50 test, invite me, you will have a 100% hit rate...

And that my friend, is why it remains subjective.. I would be able to tell you which 2 switches are different, but I wouldn't be able to tell you which one is lubed. Maybe you just had bad batch Gats, but my Gateron blues are buttery smooth. Maybe with some use that will change. Will see. Everyone must do with their stuff what they want. All we can do is share our experience, and it's great that our experience is different.

Don't know how I never noticed this thread.

Current setup
For work - Steelseries 6gv2 with black switches + magic trackpad if not just using the MBP on it's own.
Desktop - Corsair K70 RGB with MX speeds
Lounge - MS AIO for now :sick:

Super tempted to build something custom for the lounge. Spent ages looking for mech kb's with integrated track pads, but think a Apple Magic Trackpad + 60% custom kb in a custom body could be the answer.
