It's being a pain in the ass lately.

I work with a ton of warranty laptops and there has been a new issue recently where the service "system and compressed memory" uses 100% of disk usage. I can disable it through a few methods but of course after one small windows update it turns on and the client is pissed. YAY

Another issue i have is i see some machines pulling the entire network bandwidth. of course there are a few things one can do to stop this but this shouldn't be an issue! I have clients coming in saying their machine used all 10gb of their data within a two days. COMMON MICROSOFT!

I have jumped on board with every windows after vista. I loved 7 ofc, 8.1 was my homie :cool-new: and i really enjoyed 10 up to now..

just needed to rant.

I'm with you on this one.

After the last update, none of my MTP devices are working on the laptop. Company IT Technician can't even figure it out \o/.

Above MTP devices are working on other laptops. Tried manually installing the drivers but to no avail.

Had my cellphone backup on this laptop which I had to transfer to another laptop to restore.

The updates ruin Windows 10. Cannot turn them off (well you can but its not too simple). And the big ones are the worst. The creators updates.

So you've manually added the USB MTP driver through device manager?

That worked for me, but my colleague on the other hand had no joy. The driver installs, then the device is permanently disabled.

We have a 4mb line and 5 pcs at the office (fastest we can get in our area until the fiber is here) when windows 10 does updates we literately cant work for the day. I hate it so much and not allowed to turn them off.

I turned them off on my miners by going to the services and disabling the windows updater

Yip, did the exact same thing you described above for all devices. It doesn't even install the driver. Just gives an error.

Any windows 10 I install I just run "OOSU10" by O&O Software and tick a bunch of options to kill updates(Until I explicitly say "Update")/ads and other dumb bundled shit. I've also recently disabled Windows Search because it filled my SSD with a 69GB file, replaced search with "Everything" by voidtools.

i use destroy windows 10 spying(DWS) Worked like a charm for me so far and its simple

Spybot anti beacon + disabling the update process saves bandwidth on the remote sites I manage that have a capped connection.

Could you explain more on this?
I don't quite understand why you can't touch it.

I work for companies like Vodacom, FNB, etc. So if i disable windows updates and a clients machine doesn't have the new update that closes some backdoor Microsoft left in, it becomes our problem and we'd have to replace the client with a new laptop probably if someone exploits that backdoor. Clients also like to complain about everything and if i stop windows updates, i 100% guarantee there will be some that complain. It's easier for me to leave it and tell Vodacom or whoever that it's windows issue which is not covered by warranty so not my problem.

I'm also not even allowed to really look at anything on the clients computer that's software related. I'm hardware only - Contract says so :topsy_turvy:

I love Windows 10, but I miss Vista.

And before you stone me Vista is so far the best combination of reliability and user control. Windows 7 already started the process of removing user control which continued in 8.1 and is nearing completion now in Windows 10.

One trick I learned about regarding Windows Updates but which thus far never worked for me. Is that if you tell Windows you are using a metered connection (their word for capped / data-limited) then it turns off automatic update (without actually turning it off) and it becomes manual update. But my Windows will still happily gobble all the bandwidth regardless. The Store is just as bad.
I think this might be something that only worked in early Insider Preview builds.

Can't you just disable the Windows Update service in Services? That's what I do and never had an issue.

Cheers :)

Anyone else also find that Windows 10 has horribly broken sleep. My pc seems to always wake up at night and then stay awake. It always seems to be scheduled tasks around updates. I disable the task and it sleeps for a week or so until the next update and then my sleep problems are back.

Yeah! I thought I was the only one. Mine wakes semi up and then just keeps the display on with a black screen until i wiggle mouse or something. Super annoyting

you can disable the service and all dependencies around it , you can play around with the reg and disable it in GP edit but certain updates get forced through.

Other than blocking the MS update domains at a firewall level, it seems like MS has found a way to force the updates down your throat.
