Hey fellow carbies,

I've got a question for you guys.

I have gap cover through Zestlife and I currently pay R600 a month for up to 600% gap cover.

Through my company Ambledown offers up to 600% gap cover for half that price, does that mean it's a no brainer or are there other things to consider and if so, what should I do my homework on before deciding to move over to Ambledown.

My company insisted I move over to discovery, and with that they also offer the ambledown cover for like R300 a month but I think it's a company perk, I think individually I'd pay much more for this but because it's through my company I think they subsidize this. But before I move I just want to make sure that it's the right move.

Any advice?

In terms of other things to consider. You have the policy document of your own gap cover to see exactly what is covered. Get a similar breakdown from the other crowd and compare them. Then you'll know if it's the same cover or different.

Hey I got discovery classic saver with ambledown gap supreme plan. Both I get from work so I am lucky there.

In march my wife gave birth to our first kid at Sunninghill netcare. Total bill with our out of plan and pricey gynae + paediatrician was 68k. Discovery covered the paed, hospital stay and a portion of the gynae delivery costs. Was short by 14k because the gynae was not part of the discovery network. Submitted the claim to ambledown and they transferred me the 14k balance 3 weeks later which I paid over to the gynae. So they work.

Not a cent came out of my pocket for the whole birth. U must just call them and make sure it covers the gaps u want covered. Remember it generally only covers in hospital.

If Ur company if covering a portion of Ur monthly premiums then it's a no brainer.

What exactly is the gap cover for? I know I have it, but what is it there for?

Consider gap cover from FNB. The most expensive plan costs R415 for unlimited* cover.

It's to cover the gap in expenses between what a medical practitioner charges vs what your medical aid is willing to pay. Most medical aids pay 100% of a medical scheme rate. Specialists can charge whatever they want, over and above prescribed medical rates.

It is used to fund medical professional's 2nd beach houses and Porsches basically...
Your medical aid might only cover 100/200% rates, but if doctor x decides, nah, I charge 300% rate, then gap cover can fill some of that 'gap' 😏

Okay I'll check it out.. Thanks guys.

Just sometimes, you have insurance and then switch to another for cost saving etc but then theres some stupid term or condition you've missed and then before you know it you've made a mistake and I was just worried about that. I think I just need to sit with zest benefits and ambledowns benefits and make a direct comparison to know for sure. Apparently with ambledowns I'll have GAP LEVEL 4, whatever that means.. but I'll figure it out I guess. For now I'm just focused on an assignment due on Friday and then I'll sit on the weekend and do the comparisons but thanks for the feedback guys and byakugan, your birthing experience makes a difference to my decision because one thing I look for is no shit solutions and they seem to be a non shit solution. So I'm kind of wanting to make the move.

Remember gap cover is an insurance product, not a medical aid product. This means that, just like with car insurance or household insurance, your policy might not be 100% identical to the next guy's policy, even if you're both on the same product. So the only way to be certain is to compare it yourself.

The premium for 2024 is R627.00

Thats for ambledown, i am actually busy looking into this right now and I am also with discovery

I'll compare and revert this weekend when I have an update and actually let you guys know what I decide to do.

Simple, with Gap cover you can have an anesthetist knock you out before they cut you open.

Haha, last time went under the knife, the Anesthetist was very chatty and friendly. Had the needle in me said we just waiting for doc to arrive before taking me out.

I told him "you guys are strange chaps, and in a wierd way you have too much power" The last thing I remember is his face change and I was gone. Woke up after Op. He clearly had enough of me.

You insulted your anesthetist...? Is this you?

What did you decide @Xyris ?

I am currently with discovery (Essential Smart) and I am looking at upgrading to classic saver and then also getting gap cover. Not sure if I should just do gap cover with them as well or explore outside options like Ambledown or FNB

To be honest I completely forgot about doing this.

It became such a headache I ended up leaving it for another days problem. I was also smack in the middle of my exams so I didn't have the time to look into it. Biggest scam if you ask me but we still need to choose one of those scams.. I'm still with zest life for the moment.

Im with Turnberry, I pay R330 for 500% cover and all immediate family is included in the coveron the same policy at no extra cost, regardless of them being on the same medical aid as you or on a different one.
