I already have a 5.1 speaker setup from a cheapie Samsung blu-ray system and they serve me just fine. I'm going to mothball the rear speakers and switch to 2.1 or 3.1.
What I need is something to replace the blu-ray box itself. I don't need to play discs; I just need something that will take an HDMI/optical/digital co-ax input from my TV, decode it and spit out audio to 2.1 or 3.1 speakers. Ideally I want something tiny I can stick behind the wall-mounted TV. They're pewny 3ohm speakers so I really don't need much muscle.
It would be great if it supported volume control and on/off via the TV but that's not critical.
Hooking up stereo speakers with a sub would be an option, but I really think allowing Dolby DTS or whatever to decide what sound is sent to the sub ends up sounding better than a simple crossover. Same goes for centre channel audio.
Is there something cheap & cheeful that'll do the job?
