So my trusty 6 year old rig is starting to show it's age so I'm considering the following upgrade:

Current rig:
7700K
Strix Z270 mobo
16GB RAM (3200Mhz)
1080ti

Potential upgrade:
R7 5800x3D
Strix B550 mobo
32GB RAM (3600Mhz)
Will keep my 1080ti for now - first want to see what RX7000 and RTX4000 looks like.

I'm a bit torn as to whether I should rather wait for Zen 4 and Raptor Lake however I'm pretty sure these CPU's will initially have a hefty price tag and considering the price of DDR5 I will probably save myself a a bit of money if I just take the plunge now.

Any suggestions?

Budget, usage & (if) gaming resolution?

I would say either wait for raptor lake (ignore zen4 for initial release due to AMD being known for releasing buggy hardware initially).
Other than that the 5800x3d will work well

Gamer:
Your CPU is so not the bottleneck.
It would be silly to upgrade. Rather spend all into your GPU and whatever SSD storage you have.
Faster storage and faster GPU will make much more of a visible difference.

Programmer/Dev:
What? Your system is more than enough.

Photoshopper:
Get a proper calibrated screen.

RGB addict:
Buy everything. But make sure it lights up like a disco ball.

CUD addict:
Upgrade everything.

Gaming mostly...1440p.
As for budget, well the CPU/Mobo/RAM alone is going to set me back R15K.
I'm probably going to need a new AIO as well.

Currently in a similar boat. With DDR5 being as expensive as it is, it would make sense to take the plunge and get those upgrades now. The ASUS TUF X570 Pro WIFI is on sale today on Takealot. That could save you bit of cash.

Thanks for the heads up.
Good price for a X570 board but man IMO that ASUS TUF is fugly.

Do it right now.
Lol

I stumbled across one of your earlier threads...
Have you decided yet between i5-12400F and B660 combo or just upgrading to 5600x?

Haven't decided yet to be honest. Still considering the 12th gen route, but I don't really need an upgrade right now, so it's a bit difficult to convince myself to spend the moolah.

Agreed however I'm pretty sure if I slap a 3080 in my current rig I will be bottlenecking the GPU somewhat, even at 1440p?

@Sm00thSm0k3 Well, according to Tom's Hardware here:
You should have very little difference.

Note that the 7700k is probably slightly faster than the Core-i3-10100:

So with a slight overclock, I still don't see a massive CPU bottleneck.
Who cares about a 5% difference.

I would rather buy a 3080 and lose 5fps to get 120fps, than buy a 3070, new CPU, motherboard and RAM and have 90fps.

B550-F Strix WiFi is pretty decent

I've got a 3080 with the same cpu and gaming at 3440x1440, if theres a bottleneck I am surviving with it. Big step up from my 1080ti, pretty much double performance

I upgraded from a z390 and 7700k to a amd 3900x and x570 Mobo about 2 years ago, also kept the1080ti.
To me, it was a huge upgrade. Everything more responsive. Increased fps, smoother gaming, faster Photoshop and Premier. So yes, do it.

Late to the party but also the advise here is all good apart from that motherboard choice. The B550 Tomahawk is a great board and is cheaper than the -f as well as the Aorus elite AX v2.

Avoid the Pro though, it has issues.
