Hi all...so it's been a minute since I have been on the forum and I know this probably won't be of interest for most of the members but anyways....

With the influx of new games recently that I am just itching to try out on PC I can safely say the bug has bitten me once....my last gaming build was a good couple of years ago so need to get back into the game.

I am planning a new build for myself and an upgrade to my daughter's PC and if possible another low end PC.

I guess I will start with the simplest one which is to upgrade my daughter's PC. This is her current setup:
3200g
Steel legend b450 Mobo
8gigs klev ram
Super flower 500w modular psu
Phanteks case can't remember the model. And thats about it.

Going to simply swap out cpu and psu and possibly up or swap out the ram, and add in a GPU for her. Looking at either the 5500 or the 4600g. Any recommendations on a good GPU for 1080p gaming would be appreciated here.

Anything taken out of the system as well as any left overs from my build should I buy a combo or something, will be used for building up the system for my other daughter so that PC is going to be done last.

As for me...I'm kinda digging the smaller form factor at the moment but don't want to go itx so looking at m atx though this could change depending on what hardware I come across during the planning phase.

Now it's my wish list:
5700x/5800x cpu
X570/b550 Mobo
Minimum of 850w psu
32gig of ram
Storage I can wing depending on what's available or on special.
240ml AIO (digging the deepcool LT series)
Case I'm looking at either inwin A3, montech Air 100 or fractal pop mini ( any feedback from anyone using these will be great as well)
As for the GPU....well here is where I need some guidance...I'm not looking at something for 4k gaming to be honest but at least something that will give me good performance at 1440p. I'm not hung up on the whole team green or team red scenario though team green does tend to be pricier.

So yeah that's where I am on this windy ass Sunday morning so though I would just share and perhaps get some insight from the more illustrious members

I'd honestly NOT consider AMD for a new PC at the moment. AM4 is end of life, and boards are already becoming difficult to find. Your upgrade path will be limited to 5800X3D/5950X on the high end, and should the board fail a few years down the line, you'll end up with an unusable system until you can find a second hand replacement.

For perspective, until about a year ago, brand new LGA775 boards from the mid to late 2000s were still available, but try finding eg a B350/X370/B450/X570 board now. There are almost as many brand new Z490 board options as there are AM4 options in total spanning A320 through X570S. The warranty will be valid for three years regardless, but if a replacement board isn't available you'll end up with credit, which can't be connected to a CPU :p

On the AM5 side, the price is hard to justify unless you're going all out (think 7800X3D or higher).

I'd rather look at something such as a Core i5-13400F with a B760 board. Not only will it have an upgrade path all the way to the upcoming 14th gen, but new replacement boards should be readily available for the entire warranty period and longer.

I have noticed the distinct lack of am4 boards yes and am5 pricing is just ridiculous tbh. I am not someone that needs to constantly use the latest and greatest which is why I settled on the am4 ryzen 7. (I mean snap I can get the 5800x brand new for the same price as the i5).

Is there not speculation though that next gen Intel will use a different socket. If they sticking with 1700 then perhaps I need to relook at my wishlist above or at least consider an Intel one

There is speculation, yes. Intel likes to stick with a socket for two generations before dropping it.

I think a mid-range 13th gen i5 as @Oj0 suggested might be up your alley. If you feel the need to upgrade in future (staying on the same motherboard), at the very least, the higher end 13th gen CPUs should come down in price eventually, giving you some upgrade room.

The fact that intel changes sockets so frequently is what stopped me from looking at intel for my build. I have to say after Oj0's post above I have looked at a few of the intel CPU reviews...the 13400 does look like a solid mid tier recommendation and if you combine it with the fact that intel offers DDR4 as well as DDR5 options it makes it appealing considering it is newer tech vs AM4.

Throw in the upcoming Zen 5 which is most likely going to throw fuel on the fire for AM5 boards, it makes it look more likely that I am going to end building my first intel system since the 3570K

So came across a few articles and looks like 14th gen will retain 1700 socket with 1855 coming in on 15th gen....

Yes, after doing some more research, 14th gen should be on 1700 but 14th gen is a raptor lake (the 13th gen architecture) refresh rather than a truly next gen (meteor lake) architecture. Still good news for us 1700 owners though!
