Hi

So I have not looked at investing at all, ever, outside trying to buy BitCoin (and loosing R20k) and playing with that Plus500 or 500Plus thing's demo mode.

As far as I can tell i have 3 options open to me:
1. Invest in the JSE and thus only invest in companies listed on there
2. Get that Plus500 thing and invest in the (apparently) very small list of items available through them
3. Go to a professional broker and pay him more per year than the sum total of everything I want to invest...

...or option 4, die and come back as an American.

I want to invest a very small amount of money (R1,000 or so) in a company who's stock price has remained all but constant at 0.3 EUR for the past year or tree. It's not seen much growth but I would still like to say "I am a stockholder" and if they one day make something of themselves then awesome, I become the next Bill Gates and it only cost me R1000 and a bit of faith 😅😶.

The problem I keep running into is: "Please provide us with your US SSN and your US address to open your account" or "Welcome, South African, to the JSE where we don't list the company YOU care about. Why not invest in what WE would like you to?"

Is there a place that allows south Africans to create an account and invest in companies NOT just on the JSE? I found a few that offer commission free trading in stocks (only charging for the other stuff they do) and this is really great for me since I just want to make a once of splurge of stock buying and then forget about it till the day I see I am the next "richest man alive" (...or I die, which ever comes first...) but those are all for US citizens only :(

Does anyone know of such a place where South Africans can create an account?

Thanks

Damn, some deeeppp questions here...
I also looked at this “investing” in stocks, etc.
I am going to be honest, it looks like gambling to me.
You might hit the jackpot or you might loose everything.

Too many variables for my liking.

Easyequities would be your best starting point imo. Sure there is the whole hassle of emailing your documents and exchanging your R into $ but you do get a goodish access to american shares and it's not too complicated.

Thanks for the suggestion

I looked at them yesterday and just now again and it seems they also have a very limited selection of who you can invest in and their search bar is constantly breaking after every search i do, forcing me to refresh the page before I can do another search (or use their main menu for that matter) so this is not boding well for their credibility if their own website doesn't even work.... non the less I did email them last night to ask them about my requirements so I waiting and see what they say / if they reply

Are there any other options you guys know of? In particular, ways of investing in European or Japanese companies

Thanks again for the input, guys! 👍

I ended up contacting a mate of mine in the US and saying: "Hey, you know that money I have left in that account you have access to? Please use all of it and buy me stock. Thaaaanks"

So I am sorted now, thanks.

Did you look into unit trusts ?

FNB had some options in the past ...

Invest in start ups ?

Altcoins are always a big risk big reward

FNB has some online thing and also absa. But I think they have monthly charges, I am not sure.
You can look at easy equities? No hidden fees or so. But they do charge commission and stuff. Here is the fees I paid yesterday for something I bought at them -

2020-02-05Account Balance Carried ForwardR 0.00
2020-02-04Bought Tongaat Hulett Limited 233.2840 @ 426.00R-993.79
2020-02-04Broker Commission Tongaat Hulett Limited @ 0.25R-2.48 (Fixed percentage per trade @0.25)
2020-02-04Settlement and administrationR-0.75 (Looks to be move per transaction value)
2020-02-04Investor protection levy (IPL) and administrationR-0.01 (Looks to be fixed per transaction)
2020-02-04Securities transfer tax and administrationR-2.48 (Looks to be fixed per transaction could also move not sure)
2020-02-04Value Added Tax on costs (VAT)R-0.49 (Fixed but moves to the value)

This was R1000 that I invested so you will technically be able to invest R993.79 worth of ZAR into a company if you take R1k and minus the expenses. Hope this helps
