Hey all,

So there is quite a price difference between 3080s and 6900XT’s with the 6900XT seeming to offer better performance in most cases apart from ray tracing.

Any reason not to switch a 3080 for a 6900xt and take some rands off the table for a CPU upgrade?

The damn CUD!

Ray tracing is your major reason. So far the only game I've seen where the tech guys like HUB have found a noticeable difference between ray tracing on or off is Cyberpunk, where the 6900XT really doesn't perform well. Future games that may or may not be important to you, may or may not have ray tracing, which may or may not actually have a visually noticeable difference.

However if it's an older 3080 (a non-LHR model) you could trade it for a 3080 Ti for free: https://carbonite.co.za/index.php?threads/free-upgrades-from-your-3080-to-3080ti-yes-actually-free.380885

Thanks Goldfritter! The FarCry 6 Ray Tracing results seem to show a decent performance for the 6900XT.

It is unfortunately an LHR 3080 so that option is a bit tricky.

I see Woot has the Powercolor 6900xt in stock for a really good price.

Am I crazy for considering selling my Aorus XTreme 3080 LHR for this upgrade?

The 6900 XT is appreciably faster in a lot of scenarios. The only crappy thing about it is how badly it performs in RT.

Hey. I had a 3080, a 3070 and now have a 6900xt. 6900XT can be had for 21k and in most scenarios definitely outperforms the 3080. Ray tracing is a meh for me though, so.

Depends who you ask I guess, I have had both. The 6900XT is pure power. AMD Adrenalin is feature rich but I dont like it much personally.
Resell value will be better on the NVidia in the future I would think.

Not sure if resale value is going to be so good for Nvidia if bought at current prices. Just my 2c.

Turned on ray tracing for a while but quickly got over it when playing games online.

If you have to have Ray tracing, stick with Nvidia but the Raw dog performance of AMD is there

Thanks all! I’m on the fence with Ray Tracing overall.

any stability issues with the 6900XT from a software perspective?

FarCry 6's raytracing is not even noticeable. Take a screen shot of it off and on and try spot the difference.

I wouldn't call ray tracing the only reason though, I would say DLSS is the real deal sealer. AMD Super Resolution doesn't compare. And it seems Nvidia is going in hard with it, many many games are supporting it now and it's such a golden technology. I love the look of quality DLSS on 4k not to mention the massive performance gain.

I can see AMD doing some more software trickery and getting RT at the same performance as NVIDIA but at a cost of the RT quality.

Incidentally that PowerColor is the GPU available in SA that is the closest to its actual MSRP, that I have seen. So from that perspective it's a good deal.

If I were you I'd buy and play CP2077 with RT on, and compare it to RT off, and see how I feel about the difference. If it feels like a big difference and I'd miss RT on newer games, I'd stick with the 3080. If not, go for the 6900XT. Even if you weren't super keen on CP2077, I've seen at least one reviewer describe the graphics with RT (not necessarily the story or gameplay) as an experience every gamer should try to have at least once, but currently there are only two GPUs on the planet that can provide it, the 3080 and 3090.

Fc6 doesn't have proper ray tracing for a reason, remember it's an AMD game.

No ways AMD was going to allow them to include proper ray tracing and tank their top performer.

Proper ray tracing is a game changer, but you need to pair it with dlss even on a 3090. So in the end most people appreciate the option but still opts to play with 4k + dlss quality with little to no ray tracing on cyberpunk for example. The 1440p crowd can do full ray tracing with dlss though.

As a 6900xt owner , I would say RT performance is on par to just a little bit below my old 2080ti , so enough for 60 fps but I only use it in Minecraft.

Every other game off.

Some great advice here. Certainly not cut and dried either way.
